Chur travel guide and discussion

Planning a Switzerland trip and feeling overwhelmed by all the options? Start here. If it were my first time visiting Switzerland, this is the exact route I’d follow: 10 days, entirely by train, with the perfect mix of cities, lakes, mountain villages, and some of the most beautiful scenery I’ve ever seen. 📍 Zurich (2 days) Stroll the Old Town, cruise Lake Zurich, and visit the Lindt Home of Chocolate. 📍 Lucerne (2 days) Explore the charming lakefront city, then spend a day riding boats, cogwheel trains, and cable cars up Mount Rigi. 📍 Interlaken (3 days) Use it as your Swiss Alps base while exploring Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, & other mountain villages. 📍 St. Moritz (1-2 nights) A great jumping off point for the grand finale. In between, take the Bernina Express through the Alps - easily one of the most breathtaking train journeys in Europe! From there, you can either continue on to Milan for an Italy trip or return to Zurich for your flight home. This route gives you iconic Swiss views & a diverse mix of city and mountains!

Everyone knows the legendary Swiss panoramic trains like the Glacier Express or Bernina Express. They are absolutely stunning, but they also require expensive mandatory seat reservations and sell out months in advance. Want to know the ultimate travel hack? You can ride the exact same tracks and see the exact same breathtaking views using regular regional trains with just a standard Interrail or Swiss Travel Pass! 🎫🏔️ Here is how to travel the best Swiss routes on a budget without missing a single view: 1. The Bernina & Albula Hack (Chur – St. Moritz – Tirano) 🛤️ Skip the Bernina Express and hop on the regular red RhB trains. You will pass over the iconic Landwasser Viaduct and climb the spectacular Bernina Pass just the same. The best part? Many regular regional coaches still have windows that roll all the way down, meaning you get crystal-clear, glare-free photos! 📸 Take a break in the luxurious alpine town of St. Moritz before winding your way down into Italy. 2. The Glacier Express Hack (Chur – Andermatt & Zermatt) 🏔️ You don't need to pay extra for the "slowest express in the world." Ride the regular Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB) trains through the epic Rhine Gorge and up over the Oberalp Pass to Andermatt. Want to reach Zermatt? Just switch to the regular hourly regional train in Visp. The epic cogwheel climb up the valley and that first jaw-dropping view of the Matterhorn are exactly the same! 3. The Gotthard Classic (Göschenen – Lugano) 🌴 Don't bother with the premium Gotthard Panorama Express. Take the Treno Gottardo (or regional TILO trains) over the historic mountain route. You skip the massive 57km base tunnel and instead experience the famous spiral tunnels—watching the little church of Wassen pass by from three completely different angles! ⛪ At the end of the line, Mediterranean vibes and palm trees await you in stunning Lugano. 4. The Cliffside Narrow-Gauge (Locarno – Domodossola) 🌉 The Centovalli railway connects Swiss Locarno with Italian Domodossola, winding through deep gorges, lush forests, and over dozens of dizzying viaducts. With an Interrail pass, just hop on the standard international trains and enjoy the breathtaking drops into the valleys without any special tourist fees. 5. The GoldenPass Hack (Zweisimmen – Montreux) 🍇 Want to see the dramatic shift from rugged alpine pastures to sweeping vineyards? Ride the regular MOB narrow-gauge trains on the GoldenPass route. You'll wind down the steep mountainside directly into Montreux, greeted by the massive, sparkling expanse of Lake Geneva. 🌊 Traveling on regional trains isn't a compromise—it is the ultimate freedom. You can hop on and off whenever you want, open the windows for photos, and rely on the flawless Swiss timetable. ⏱️ Which of these legendary train routes is at the absolute top of your bucket list? #summervacay Riding the Glacier Express from Zermatt to St. Moritz in summer is more than just a train ride — it’s a slow-travel experience that wraps you in comfort while revealing Switzerland’s most stunning alpine scenery. 🌄 Departure from Zermatt The day began in the car-free village of Zermatt, under the gaze of the mighty Matterhorn. Stepping onto the Glacier Express feels like boarding a moving luxury lounge — panoramic windows stretch from seat to ceiling, and every seat promises a front-row view of the Alps. 🚞 Onboard Experience The 8-hour ride was as relaxing as it was visually breathtaking. Rolling through Valais vineyards, past the Rhône Gorge (Swiss Grand Canyon), and over the iconic Landwasser Viaduct, each turn of the track revealed postcard-worthy vistas. Commentary (via the onboard audio system) shared insights into the landmarks and history along the way — subtle, never intrusive. 🍽️ Gourmet Meal at 2,000m I pre-booked the 3-course lunch, and it was well worth it. Think fine dining at 2,000 meters: seasonal salad, tender beef with rösti, and a light dessert, all served directly at your seat with white-linen service. Pair it with a glass of Swiss white wine for the full experience. 🏞️ Highlights Along the Route · Oberalp Pass: The highest point of the journey (2,033 m), surrounded by lakes and summer greenery · Rhine Gorge: Towering limestone walls and dramatic bends · Tiny hamlets & remote chalets: Each village we passed felt like a storybook page come to life 🎯 Arrival in St. Moritz After nearly 8 hours of gliding through alpine perfection, we arrived in St. Moritz Bad, where fresh mountain air and calm lake views welcomed us. It’s a seamless transition from train to trail, spa, or lakeside stroll. The Glacier Express in summer is pure alpine magic — a journey where the ride is the destination. If you’re after a relaxed, immersive way to see the heart of Switzerland, this is it. Just lean back, sip your wine, and let the mountains do the talking.

🇨🇭Traveling in Switzerland, taking a scenic train🚞 is the best way to start exploring. A comprehensive railway network helps tourists travel around Switzerland painlessly, and with just a simple purchase of a Swiss Travel Pass, you can take most of the scenic trains, and many attraction tickets are also included. 🇨🇭Several scenic trains are well-known within the country, with the Bernina Express being the most famous. The train travels from Chur/St.Moritz to Tirano, passing through 55 tunnels and over 196 bridges along the way, where every shot is a masterpiece. 🌉The most famous is the iconic Landwasser Viaduct, the viaduct, the Rhaetian Railway, and parts of the region have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The train winds around the high towers and plunges down, giving the sensation of riding a roller coaster🎢. 🚂When visiting Switzerland, I highly recommend taking a scenic train, and personally, I think the Bernina Express is the best part!

Rode the Glacier Express From Chur to Brig It lives up to its name as the world's slowest scenic train ⛰️ . St. Moritz → Zermatt We only experienced one section of the route this time The train passes through the Rhine Gorge Crosses the Oberalp Pass (elevation 2,033m) The mountain scenery keeps changing along the way 🌤️ . My favorite design feature! No need to go to the dining car to eat The seats come with super spacious individual dining tables 🍝 Enjoy dinner right at your seat, and it tastes pretty good ✨ . The dining car windows can be pulled down Perfect for capturing unobstructed views along the way The carriage also has a dedicated guestbook You can jot down your travel thoughts at any time ✍️

🏔️ A World Heritage railway line: A stunning guide to the Alps 📍 Key landmark: The World Heritage-listed Albula Line This isn't Milan; it's the Albula/Bernina landscape area on the border of Switzerland and Italy. The red train in the photo is the famous Bernina Express, which runs on a railway line designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This route connects Chur, Switzerland, and Tirano, Italy, featuring glaciers, lakes, viaducts, and pristine forests along the way. It is the most essential scenic corridor in the Alps. 🚞 The red train: A visual feast under panoramic windows The bright red in the photo is the absolute visual focus. This train doesn't require complex transfers to take you through the dramatic contrast from temperate forests to frigid glaciers. Sitting under the huge panoramic windows, you don't need to struggle to find an angle because every frame outside the window is wallpaper-worthy. One second it's lush coniferous forests, and after turning a corner, you're facing a snow-covered glacier world. This kind of visual impact can only be experienced on this railway. 🌉 Brusio Spiral Viaduct: A marvel of engineering and nature The stunning spiral curve in photo 6 is the famous Brusio Spiral Viaduct. To allow the train to climb in height over a short distance, engineers designed this 360-degree loop structure. When you travel by train or drive through here, you can not only feel the ingenuity of human engineering but also overlook the depth of the entire valley. This is a must-visit location for photography enthusiasts; no matter how you shoot it, it looks like a scene from a blockbuster movie. 💧 Alpine lakes: A blue that reflects the soul Besides the train, the lakes here are surreal. For example, the lakes near St. Moritz have water as calm as a giant mirror. The blue sky, white clouds, and distant snow-capped mountains are perfectly reflected in the water, making it hard to tell where the sky ends and the water begins. Just pausing here is a pleasure; the air is cold and fresh, as if it could wash away all your fatigue. It is recommended to wear a bright-colored jacket; standing by the lake, you will be the most vivid accent in this landscape painting. 🎒 Exclusive travel tips · Best season: Although beautiful in all four seasons, October–November (intertwining autumn colors and first snow) or January–February (deep winter snow scenery) offer the best photo opportunities. · Photo spots: Besides on the train, be sure to stop at the viewing platform below the Brusio Spiral Viaduct; it's the perfect vantage point for capturing the train's loop. · Outfit suggestions: The background is mostly white snow-capped mountains or dark forests, so it is recommended to wear high-saturation colors (such as Klein blue or bright orange) or pure white clothing. Avoid dark gray or camouflage, otherwise, you will easily blend into the background. · Transportation: It is recommended to purchase the Swiss Travel Pass. It not only covers this train but also allows free rides on buses and boats along the route, offering great value for money.

During this trip to Switzerland, I experienced two famous scenic train routes: Luzern–Interlaken Express (GoldenPass Line) + Glacier Express If you already have a Swiss Travel Pass (STP), both fares are covered, so you don't need to buy separate tickets. However, the "reservation rules" for these two trains are very different. The Luzern–Interlaken Express does not require mandatory reservations, whereas the Glacier Express absolutely requires a paid reservation. ⸻ 💛 Luzern–Interlaken Express | Lakeside Views All the Way We took the route from Luzern to Interlaken Ost, a journey of about 1 hour and 50 minutes. I found this segment very comfortable. The scenery isn't the kind of breathtaking, high-altitude mountain landscape, but rather typical, therapeutic Swiss countryside. Outside the window, you'll see: ・Turquoise lakes ・Lush green hillsides and wooden chalets ・Waterfalls and rivers ・Quaint lakeside towns ・People strolling and sunbathing by the lake ・Residents enjoying their holidays on small boats The entire route passes through the Brünig Pass. Official guides say you can see five lakes along this stretch before finally entering Interlaken along Lake Brienz. Watching people walk and row by the lake really makes you think, "How is the daily life of the Swiss so leisurely?" 🎫 Should you reserve a seat on the GoldenPass? Reservations are not mandatory, but I recommend them during peak season. We happened to encounter a tour group this time, so even First Class was almost full, and the carriage was a bit lively 😂 For the 2026 peak season (May 2 – Nov 1), the reservation fee is CHF 16 per person; during the off-season, it’s CHF 12. We booked our seats directly through the official system in advance. If you care about having a window seat or don't want to search for a spot, I think it’s worth the money. ⸻ ❤️ Glacier Express | High Mountains and Canyon Landscapes The Glacier Express is completely different from the previous train. Reservations are mandatory! The STP covers the ticket price, but the reservation fee is not included. For 2026, the reservation fee for both first and second class is CHF 54 per person, and the official system currently allows bookings as early as 93 days before travel. We originally wanted to take a more complete route, but when we checked about two months in advance, many seats were already gone. We finally managed to book: Brig → Chur, a journey of about 4 hours. ⸻ 🏔️ What to see between Brig and Chur? Although this segment does not pass over the classic Landwasser Viaduct (which is on the route from Chur toward St. Moritz), it still features very important highlights of the Glacier Express. The most notable sights include: ・Andermatt ・Oberalp Pass ・Oberalpsee ・Rhine Gorge The train climbs to the highest point of the entire Glacier Express—the Oberalp Pass, at an altitude of 2,033 meters. Right next to it is the mountain lake, Oberalpsee. The train moves slowly along the high-altitude lake, offering a completely different view from the lakeside towns seen on the GoldenPass. The latter part passes through the Rhine Gorge, with white cliffs sandwiching the turquoise Rhine River. Also known as the "Grand Canyon of Switzerland," this was a highlight I really looked forward to on the Brig → Chur segment. ⸻ 📌 Key Booking Points for Both Scenic Trains Luzern–Interlaken Express ・Fare covered by STP ・Seat reservations optional ・2026 peak season reservation fee: CHF 16/person ・Recommended for peak times or window seats ・Luzern → Interlaken is approx. 1h 50m Glacier Express ・Fare covered by STP ・Mandatory reservation ・2026 1st/2nd class reservation fee: CHF 54/person ・Reservations open 93 days in advance ・Popular dates must be booked as early as possible 💭 Personal Reflections The two trips offer completely different vibes. The Luzern–Interlaken Express feels like sitting in front of a giant picture window watching lakes, green slopes, and Swiss towns glide by—very relaxing and healing. The Glacier Express has a much stronger high-mountain feel, showcasing valleys, passes, alpine lakes, and canyons. The experience of the train climbing to 2,033 meters is quite significant. Although it was a pity we didn't get to ride the Landwasser Viaduct segment this time, the Oberalp Pass, Oberalpsee, and Rhine Gorge still made the Brig → Chur segment very worthwhile. If you already have an STP, I think arranging scenic trains for long-distance travel days is a great deal—the travel time itself becomes the attraction. 🚆🏔️

Located in Central Europe, Switzerland is traversed by the Alps in its south and center, creating a unique landscape of snow-capped mountains, lakes, meadows, and charming towns. Rather than rushing through, Switzerland is best experienced by taking a train ride or staying a few nights by a lake, letting the scenery unfold slowly outside your window. 🚞 🏔️ Start with the Alps and take in the mountain scenery A trip to Switzerland is rarely complete without the Alps. You can head to the Jungfrau region to breathe in the fresh mountain air amidst the peaks and snow, or travel to Zermatt, home of the Matterhorn, and journey from the town toward the mountains to watch the snow-capped peaks reveal delicate layers in different light. On clear days, the valleys, meadows, and distant peaks come together to form a natural masterpiece. 🌿 🚞 Hop on a train and let the journey itself become the scenery Train travel in Switzerland has a unique rhythm. The Glacier Express connects Zermatt and St. Moritz, passing through valleys, lakes, and mountain villages along the way, while the Bernina Express traverses the Alps, extending from Switzerland all the way to Tirano, Italy. Instead of viewing the journey merely as a way to reach your destination, pay attention to the ever-changing scenery outside your window and let the train ride become a part of your travel memories. 💙 Lakeside towns, savoring a slower pace of life Switzerland's lakes and towns offer a different kind of gentle scenery. You can stroll along the shores of Lake Geneva and gaze out at the Alps. If you have time, head to Interlaken to experience the tranquil atmosphere of being surrounded by mountains and water between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. 🏘️ Step into the towns, and into the daily life of Switzerland Travel doesn't always have to be about chasing famous landmarks. Wander through the small streets of Zermatt, Grindelwald, or Montreux, stroll among wooden houses, gardens, and corner cafes, and occasionally stop for a coffee or a local pastry to experience the meticulous and leisurely side of Swiss life. 📌 Tap the product card below to start your curated HHtravel Switzerland vacation Flagship Store

Is this the most beautiful train ride in the world? CHECK DETAILS BELOW (save for later!) The Bernina Express train takes you from Switzerland to Italy, winding through some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in Europe. I took the 4.5-hour route from St. Moritz, Switzerland to Tirano, Italy, but you can also take the full 8-hour journey from Chur if you want the longer scenic route through the Swiss Alps. A few things to know before you book: ✨ The Bernina Express is one of the most scenic train rides in Switzerland and follows a UNESCO World Heritage railway route. ✨ If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, the train fare is included, but you still need to book a separate seat reservation for the panoramic Bernina Express cars. This applies to both 1st and 2nd class. ✨ Seat reservations can sell out weeks ahead, especially during peak travel seasons, so book ahead if this is a must-do on your Switzerland itinerary. ✨ The scenery changes dramatically along the way depending on the season - this was April, so we enjoyed snow-covered peaks, alpine lakes, mountain villages, and valleys. ✨ The route runs year-round, so the experience will look different depending on when you visit. ✨ You can also ride more affordable regional trains along the same Bernina route without the panoramic car reservation, but the official Bernina Express experience requires that seat reservation. Regional trains are just as beautiful, and the windows open up so you can take great photos without reflections. This is one of those train rides where the journey really is the destination. Save this for your Switzerland travel planning and send it to someone who would take this train from Switzerland to Italy. It's boasting a history that spans over 5,000 years. Nestled in a deep valley surrounded by the Alps, it serves as the capital of the Canton of Grisons (Graubünden). As a car-free historic hub and the starting point for famous Alpine trains, it blends ancient heritage with spectacular mountain access. The main attractions are the following: Chur Old Town (Altstadt): A beautifully preserved, entirely car-free medieval core filled with colorful historic buildings, hidden courtyards, and bustling squares like the Arcas and Postplatz. St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral: An 800-year-old Romanesque-Gothic cathedral overlooking the city, famous for its magnificent late-Gothic high altar and detailed stone carvings. Bündner Kunstmuseum (Fine Arts Museum): A striking architectural fusion of an 1870s villa and a modern minimalist extension, housing a premier collection of Swiss art, including works by Alberto Giacometti. Rhaetian Museum (Rätisches Museum): Housed in a baroque patrician house, this museum offers an interactive journey through the archeological and cultural history of the Grisons region from prehistoric times to the present day. Giger Bar: Designed by the Academy Award-winning local artist H.R. Giger (creator of the movie "Alien"), this unique bar features a surreal, skeletal interior structure modeled entirely after his biomechanical artwork. Brambrüesch Mountain: Accessible via a cable car directly from the city center, this mountain offers panoramic alpine views, summer hiking and mountain biking trails, and winter skiing and snowshoeing. The Rhine River: Located near the birthplace of the Alpine Rhine, the valley surrounding Chur offers flat, scenic cycling paths and walking trails through nearby vineyards. The Bernina Express and Glacier Express: Chur is a major hub for these world-famous panoramic train lines, which take travelers across soaring viaducts and through mountain passes toward St. Moritz, Zermatt, and Italy.
