Regret seeing this too late! This place is cool and affordable for summer in August
Where to go in August to escape the heat? You might think hiding in the mountains like a wild person, but some places are just a two-hour high-speed train ride away, with prices stuck a decade ago. For summer escapes, some spend $3000 to squeeze onto trendy skywalks, while others spend $500 in ancient towns counting stars and eating iced jelly—the difference is knowing where to go. This year, I trimmed the list, cutting out overpriced spots, leaving eight places that keep you cool without breaking the bank.
01 Nanchong | Sichuan
Others visit Langzhong ancient town for Zhang Fei beef, but I recommend going for the breeze through the alleys.
⏰ After 5 PM, the wind on the Jialing River carries moisture through the alleys, turning the whole ancient town into a natural air conditioner, ten times more comfortable than an AC room.
From Huaguang Tower, head south and turn into Xuedao Street. Large vats sit outside the vinegar shops, and you can smell the sour aroma of Baoning vinegar from afar.
🍜 At the corner, there’s a long-established beef noodle shop. The bowl is bigger than your face, and the chili oil floating on the soup looks intimidating, but one bite reveals more numbing spice than heat. Paired with a side of pickled vegetables, you get full for just over ten yuan.
⚠️ Don’t stroll the Zhongtian Tower section under the sun during the day—the stone pavement gets scorching hot, like frying eggs. Visit in the evening when the lanterns on the city wall light up and the river breeze blows—that’s Langzhong.
02 Dalian | Liaoning
Dalian is perfect for off-peak travel—sunbathe by the sea in the morning, cool off in the mountains in the afternoon, and relax in the square at night. You can experience three seasons in one day.
📍 At Jinshitan National Geopark, before 10 AM, the seawater hasn’t warmed up yet, and walking barefoot on the pebbles feels icy cool.
⏰ If you go at noon, the rocks get so hot you’ll want shoes. Better to head to Tangli Lake Park, where the afternoon shade from dawn redwoods blocks out the sun completely. You can walk around without breaking a sweat.
Laohutan Ocean Park is great for kids, but ⚠️ avoid weekend afternoons when it’s packed like sardines, especially in the beluga show. I usually go on weekday mornings, then stroll through Xinghai Square afterward. The sea breeze refreshes you completely.
🍜 For dinner, pick any seafood stall on Tianjin Street. Spicy stir-fried clams with cold beer costs about 60 yuan per person, ten times better than mall chains.
03 Karamay | Xinjiang
You might not believe Karamay is cool, but at Wuerhe World Devil City, the temperature difference between morning and night is so big you can wear a down jacket. At noon, the sun is hot, but if you hide in the Yadan shadows, it instantly feels 10 degrees cooler.
📍 Take the small train from the park entrance. The second stop, the Sphinx, is the most photogenic. ⏰ After 6 PM, the setting sun lights up the earth mounds, making the desert glow golden red.
🍜 Outside the park, a Kazakh man sells roasted buns filled with lamb, onion, and cumin. One bite bursts with juice. At 5 yuan each, it’s way more authentic than city trendy restaurants.
⚠️ Don’t buy the off-road vehicle tickets at the park entrance—they’re expensive, bumpy, and leave you covered in dust. Better to walk slowly, take photos wherever you want, saving money and enjoying freedom. If you have time, don’t rush to leave at night. The Milky Way over the desert is visible to the naked eye, more stunning than any light show.
04 Chengde | Hebei
Chengde’s Mountain Resort isn’t just a name, but how you explore it to stay cool matters.
📍 Enter through Lizheng Gate, but don’t rush to the back hills. Head toward the lake area first.
⏰ Before 10 AM, the lake mist lingers. Walking in the corridor by the Misty Rain Tower, the cool breeze feels refreshing, almost no heat.
🍜 Hungry at noon? Exit the east gate and cross Wulie River to find “Old Third Lamb Soup.” Lamb offal soup with baked flatbread costs 20 yuan and fills you up.
⚠️ The fast food inside the resort is expensive and bad. Don’t settle for it.
In the afternoon, head to Jinshanling Great Wall. ⏰ Start climbing after 3 PM when the sun tilts west. You won’t be in the sun long before reaching the enemy tower. This section is much quieter than Badaling, with gentler steps, suitable for elders and kids. Standing on the wall, looking at distant mountains, the wind blows strong—that kind of openness no air conditioner can give.
⚠️ Remember to book tickets in advance on the “Mountain Resort and Surrounding Temples” official account. Summer on-site lines can be frustratingly long.
05 Weinan | Shaanxi
The only way to stay cool climbing Mount Hua is to climb at night.
⏰ Arrive at Yuquan Temple entrance by 10 PM. Above is the starry sky, below are stone steps, and the mountain wind whistles by. The higher you climb, the cooler it gets. At the North Peak, you can even wear a windbreaker.
📌 The night climbing route is well established, with lights and rest stops. Don’t waste time queuing two hours under the sun for the “Sky Plank Road” during the day and get sunburned.
🍜 At the East Peak sunrise platform, vendors sell hot soy milk and instant noodles for 8 yuan a bowl—a fair price for the mountaintop.
⚠️ If taking the West Peak cable car down, be sure to go before 10 AM to avoid two-hour lines. To save your legs, try “up West, down North”—cable car up, walk down. But if your knees are weak, avoid the steep North Peak slope.
06 Wenzhou | Zhejiang
Yandang Mountain is all about coolness in summer.
📍 After 4 PM in Lingfeng Scenic Area, sunlight filters through rock crevices, gilding the mountains. Most tourists have left, and you can hear the stream clearly.
🍜 On the “Yandang Mountain farmhouse” street outside the park, pick any place and order river fish with tofu. The fish is so tender it flakes with chopsticks. Paired with white rice, 40 yuan is a great meal.
⚠️ But don’t visit Dalongqiu waterfall in the morning. The sun angle causes mist glare that blinds you, and photos come out all white. Better to visit Liu Bowen’s hometown in Wencheng County first. It’s all stone paths and ancient trees, with shade blocking the sun, much cooler than the main Yandang area.
🚄 Take a bus from Wenzhou South Station to Yandang Mountain in about an hour, half the cost of a taxi.
07 Putian | Fujian
Meizhou Island is best visited before 10 AM and after 4 PM.
⏰ Before 10, the square in front of Mazu Ancestral Temple isn’t fully sunlit, and sea breezes blow from all directions. Standing under the golden Mazu statue feels refreshing.
🍜 On the island, the “Goose Tail Divine Stone Park” has a nearby seafood noodle shop called “Seaside Family.” Their oyster omelet is crispy outside and tender inside, served with seaweed soup. Thirty yuan fills you up.
📌 The best way to get around Meizhou Island is by electric scooter. Ride and park wherever you want, enjoying the sea breeze.
⚠️ But don’t rent uncovered tricycles—the seats get scorching hot, like sitting on a griddle. In the afternoon, go to Golden Sand Beach, find a shaded umbrella, lie down, watch the waves roll in, and do nothing all afternoon.
⚠️ Watch your sun protection. UV rays on the island are twice as strong as in the city, and even cloudy days can cause sunburn. For fewer crowds, visit on weekdays. Weekends get packed like dumplings.
08 Chongzuo | Guangxi
Detian Transnational Waterfall’s coolness comes from the mist.
📍 At the viewing platform directly in front, the waterfall spray hits your face. It’s incredibly refreshing in summer.
⏰ The best light and strongest flow are from 9 to 11 AM. Photos come out clear without filters.
🍜 At the park exit, a small shop sells Vietnamese chicken pho. The broth is fresh and sweet, served with lime and mint. One bowl perks you right up.
⚠️ Avoid afternoons when the sun shines directly on the waterfall, causing mist glare that blinds you. It’s also too crowded to get on the viewing platform. Better to see the waterfall in the morning, then head to Mingshi Pastoral in the afternoon. Rent a bike and ride slowly along the rice fields. The breeze through the sugarcane forest is cool and sweet. 📌 Zuojiang Huashan Rock Paintings are nearby, but ⚠️ you must take a boat to see them. Boat schedules are limited, so arrive at the dock before 3 PM or you’ll just be staring at the river.
If you’re short on time and hate the heat, I personally think Nanchong and Chengde are the most comfortable—low prices, many activities, no ticket rush. If you want wild nature, Karamay and Weinan will get you the most likes on social media. Any questions? Chat in the comments—I’ll reply one by one.
