2026 Carmen Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in August)

This time, I flew from Kuala Lumpur to Cebu, and then took a ferry to Bohol Island. Overall, Bohol beats Boracay. It's less commercialized, yet the hotels are better. The scenery is similar, though Boracay's white sand texture is slightly nicer. However, food in Bohol is cheaper and tastier. The downside is the transportation. Grab is pricey, jeepney routes are limited, and haggling for tuk-tuks is just a hassle. Transportation Tips If you can catch a direct flight to Panglao, absolutely go for it. You can take a bus from Cebu Airport to Pier 1, but it takes forever. Ferry tickets are 900 pesos on-site / 80 pesos more expensive online. Expect to wait in line for at least 30 minutes. Terminal fee is 30 pesos, and baggage is 50 pesos. It takes 2 hours to get to Tagbilaran, and from there, it's a 1-hour Grab ride to Alona. In total, expect to spend over 200 RMB and 5 hours per person. Hotels Batala – Budget-friendly with a nice vibe. Value for money: 7/10. Modala – A proper resort. The pool and beach are absolutely stunning, and the breakfast menu changes daily. The only drawbacks are the slightly remote location and the strict check-in/out times. Motorcycle Rental 350 pesos a day + 120 pesos for gas. The roads are in good condition. Highly recommend renting one to hit up the Tarsier Sanctuary (150 pesos entrance fee) and Chocolate Hills. Foodie Spots · Gerry's – An absolute must-visit every time I'm in the Philippines · BeeFarm – One of the best meals of my life. The taro ice cream, pork ribs, pasta, and shrimp soup are all top-notch. Around 800 pesos per person · Tomar Tapas Bar – A Spanish spot with killer sunset views. Paella and tapas under a purple sky. 4 tapas + paella + drinks for about 2300 pesos. Totally blows Spanish restaurants back home out of the water · Bougainvillea – Not impressed. It's pricier, and the taste is definitely a step down · IceFlakes – Highly recommend the mango coconut shaved ice and traditional Filipino halo-halo

The panoramic view from the top is absolutely magnificent! You can also ride ATVs off-road and go ziplining – it's so thrilling! 🐒 Tarsier Conservation Area · Meet the World's Smallest Adorable Monkeys The palm-sized tarsiers are just too cute! With big, round eyes, they're so soft and adorable, they'll melt your heart. When visiting, remember to be quiet, don't use flash photography, and don't scare these little elves. 🤿 Diving Paradise · The Underwater World is Stunning The Balicasag Island Wall is incredibly breathtaking, with a 3000-meter drop-off that's simply amazing! You can snorkel to see corals, sea turtles, and schools of fish – even if you can't swim. In the early morning, you can also go out to chase dolphins, watching them leap in groups is so therapeutic. 🌴 Loboc River · Enjoy an Amazonian Experience Float down the river on a bamboo raft, enjoy a buffet, listen to live music, and admire the tropical rainforest on both banks. At night, you can even see fireflies, creating an incredible ambiance. Bohol Island is truly worth visiting again and again! Friends living in Panglao, after seeing our photos, said they hadn't explored Bohol enough. We've put together the perfect full-day itinerary, encompassing the most picturesque spots in Bohol, both in time and location. This includes: · active time on ATVs, · admiring the Chocolate Hills, the eighth wonder of the world, · swimming in the emerald waters of a waterfall hidden in the jungle, · a delicious lunch on a cruise boat on the Loboc River with live music and Filipino flavor. We also included: · where to find the Philippine tarsier, the smallest primate in the world, and · a walk through a relict forest. So, let's begin our unforgettable day. _______________ Location 1 Chocolate Hills by ATV The perfect way to start the day is with some activity. Be sure to book an ATV trip through the famous Chocolate Hills in advance – a popular adventure where you can admire this geological wonder up close. Anyone can do it; it's not difficult. We booked for 10 AM, but earlier would have been better to have some spare time. Location: Bohol province, Carmen district, central Bohol Time to location: 60 minutes from the Bohol coast, 90 minutes from Panglao Routes: Short walks (about 1 hour) or longer trips to viewpoints Cost: 25-30 euros Season: The hills are covered in greenery during the dry season, turning brown usually from March to May Booking: on platforms or on the company's website. We rented an ATV from Graham, but there are actually several of them within the same square kilometer. Options: buggy for two, ATV for one. Location 2 Chocolate Hills from the observation deck The Chocolate Hills are one of the most recognizable natural landmarks in the Philippines and the main symbol of Bohol, even appearing on the island's coat of arms. The main observation deck is called the Chocolate Hills Complex and is located three minutes from the ATVs. You arrive at the parking lot, where you buy a ticket. Then you transfer to a local shuttle, which takes you to the entrance of the observation deck. Keep your ticket so the shuttle can take you back down to the parking lot. There are two observation decks, the steps are not difficult, and there's a gazebo along the way for rest if you get tired. Time to explore: 30 minutes is enough. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. Location 3 We're heading to the Philippine tarsier. The most ethical and appropriate place to see them is the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary, 20 minutes from the Chocolate Hills. This is not a petting zoo, but a protected forest sanctuary where the animals live in their natural habitat. The sanctuary has specially planted plants that attract insects. This is a natural feeding method without human intervention. Photography is only permitted from a distance and without a flash. Even the light from a phone can be stressful for them. It's a very quiet, peaceful place. Location: Corella Municipality. The tour lasts approximately 20-30 minutes and takes place along shady paths. Comfortable shoes are required, especially after rain. Hours: Daily from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM Ticket price: 150 pesos Tip: There are two delicious spots in the parking lot – one for ice cream and one for shakes/drinks. I tried the durian ice cream (very original) and the avocado ice cream (no distinct flavor, just the color). Interesting facts about the tarsier · Its eyes are larger than its brain. · It doesn't move its eyes, only turning its head 180 degrees. · Weighs from 90-160 grams, about the size of a man's fist. A pocket pet. · The tarsier is a nocturnal hunter and feeds only on insects. · It can leap up to 5 meters while standing about 10-12 cm tall. · It is one of the few mammals that doesn't tolerate stress at all. Therefore, it is protected at the national level. Location 4. Lunch Cruise on the Loboc River After a light snack, you can head to the Loboc River Cruise tourist complex for a cruise and lunch along the most beautiful part of the Loboc River. This activity also requires early reservations, so make sure to book in advance. A river cruise is an excellent choice for lunch in a unique and even romantic setting. An interactive show of traditional Filipino dances on small docks, live music on the boat, and some truly impressive vocals, I say as an expert. Location: 30 minutes from Tagbilaran, meaning we're heading down toward Panglao Island. Route duration: 60 minutes. The last cruise departs at 2:30 PM. Price: 350 pesos (river cruise and lunch) Children 0-3 years old free, drinks included. 4-8 years old: 50% of the price, drinks included. Location 4.1. On the way from the tarsier, it's worth stopping for a few moments for a wonderful photo. Five to eight minutes from the reserve, a relict high forest begins. It makes for beautiful photos with its delicate shadows. Many people take photos right on the median strip of the S-shaped bend, but we occupied both lanes. Security is lenient to photo ops and helps regulate the flow of cars, which don't often pass. The entrance to Bilar Eco Park is nearby; the price is a symbolic 20 pesos. A leisurely stroll among the towering relict mangroves will take about an hour, if you have the time. Until then, I'd only seen mangroves growing out of the water. The park has an interesting zipline and a bicycle zipline. I don't know, maybe that's what we saw later on the cruise, when people were flying above us like birds on a zipline. The sight is impressive from below, and probably even more captivating from above. Location 5. Emerald Falls Our final spectacular location will allow you to wash away the day's fatigue under the magnificent Pahangog Falls with its emerald waters. The main thing is not to miss it, as the sign only points in one direction. We leave our vehicle in the parking lot and, accompanied by a guide, walk the 10 minutes to the waterfall. You can get some great, spectacular photos on the bridge with the waterfall in the background. For a small fee, a guide will also take you into the water and take 10-15 winning photos, as they know all the angles of the waterfall better than you. This will save you time so you can catch the sunset! And the Philippines is the king of sunsets. Panglao is an island where I spent a week, but I would have happily stayed for a month. It’s tourist-friendly, convenient, and easy to navigate. This is often the destination for first-time visitors to the Philippines. Here’s what I saw and felt. Beaches The island boasts many beaches with white sand and crystal-clear water. I visited several of them. Dumaluan and Bolod felt calm and relaxing, with fewer people and a stronger connection to nature. Alona Beach is the most famous and lively. During the day, it’s crowded with people, boats, and music. Swimming is possible, but I preferred visiting in the evening for a stroll or dinner. If you’re looking for cleaner water and fewer crowds, open the map and explore the coastline a bit further from Alona. You can find your perfect beach in just one day. Convenience and Location Panglao is connected to Bohol by a bridge. The airport is located right on the island, saving time after arrival. You can reach the beaches within ten to fifteen minutes. Shops, cafes, pharmacies, ATMs, and bike rentals are all nearby. Getting around is easiest on a motorbike. Rentals start at around 250 pesos per day. If you’re renting for a week, don’t hesitate to ask for a discount. You can also use tricycles, but it’s better to negotiate prices in advance. Bargaining is acceptable. If you plan to actively explore Bohol, a convenient option is to hire a car with a driver for the whole day. This costs around 2,000 pesos and is often cheaper than booking separate tours. Excursions and Nature Panglao is a great base for exploring Bohol. Chocolate Hills, waterfalls, jungles, and viewpoints are one to two hours away. We encountered rain several times, so a raincoat and a light jacket are definitely useful. Marine tours are a story of their own. Boats depart daily to Balicasag and Virgin Island. Snorkeling is truly impressive—corals, turtles, schools of fish. Sometimes you might hear about sharks and dolphins, but that’s a matter of luck. It’s better to book through trusted agencies or your accommodation hosts for peace of mind and clear pricing. Infrastructure The island has everything for a comfortable stay. Supermarkets, coffee shops, laundromats, coworking spaces, salons, and 24-hour stores. There are plenty of places offering European cuisine. If you want to save on groceries, you can go to Tagbilaran, where prices are lower and there are larger supermarkets. The clearest water is usually in the morning until around ten. If the sea looks murky in one spot, it’s easier to move to another beach than to wait. Cons Alona Beach is overcrowded. There are lots of people, boats near the shore, vendors, and music. The beach itself isn’t very large, and the water isn’t always crystal-clear. If you’re staying nearby, it’s worth walking to adjacent parts of the coastline for a quieter and more pleasant experience. Prices are higher than in other parts of Bohol and on less touristy islands. Accommodation, vehicle rentals, and even fruits are more expensive. Nightlife is mostly centered around Alona. There are bars, but overall, the island is calm. Most places close early. On New Year’s Eve, it was lively and fun with fireworks and parties, but on regular days, the atmosphere is relaxed. Conclusion Panglao is a convenient and comfortable island. It’s suitable for those who want to combine beach relaxation with excursions without complicated logistics. If you don’t mind the touristy vibe and slightly higher prices, it’s a great starting point for exploring the Philippines. Who It’s For Those visiting for the first time and looking for straightforward infrastructure. Those who value comfort and safety. Those who want a mix of sea, nature, and excursions in one place.

Chocolate Hills are one of the most recognizable natural landmarks of the Philippines and the main symbol of Bohol Island. Over a thousand uniformly shaped hills are scattered across the central part of the island, resembling truffles carefully placed on a giant plate. How Chocolate Hills Were Formed From a scientific perspective, the explanation is both simple and beautiful. The hills were formed from limestone and coral deposits that millions of years ago were the ocean floor. Water and time did their work, eroding the rocks and shaping them into smooth, cone-like hills. During the rainy season, they are green, but in the dry season, the grass dries out, turning the hills brown. This is when they truly resemble chocolate candies, hence the name. Legend and Local Folklore There’s also a charming story. According to legend, two giants fought each other, throwing stones. When the battle ended, they left behind thousands of hills. A more romantic version tells of a giant who cried over unrequited love, and his tears solidified into hills. Locals prefer this story over geology. Location and How to Get There The main viewing area is called Chocolate Hills Complex and is located in the Carmen area, in the center of the island. How to Get There From Tagbilaran: about 1 hour by motorbike or car From Panglao: approximately 1.5 hours You don’t necessarily need to book a tour. It’s easy to get there on your own by motorbike or taxi. Visiting Experience You arrive at the parking lot, where you purchase a ticket. Then, you transfer to a local shuttle that takes you to the entrance of the viewing area. From there, it’s straightforward: You get off Climb the stairs Reach the viewing platforms At the top, there are two viewing platforms offering panoramic views of hundreds of hills. You can take your time to walk around, take photos, and enjoy the scenery without rushing. Cost and Operating Hours Entrance fee: around 100 PHP Transfer is included in the price Open daily from morning till evening Typically, visiting the site takes about 30–45 minutes. Additional Activities If you’re looking for more action, there are paid activities available at the base. You can ride: ATVs Buggy cars To access these, head down and ask the staff where the rental area is. They’ll guide you on-site. Is It Worth Visiting? Yes. It’s not a place where you’ll spend half a day, but it’s definitely one of those spots you should see at least once. Especially during the dry season, when the hills truly look chocolatey.
