On a trip to Stockholm, Sweden, besides the Royal Palace, the Old Town, and the Nobel Museum, the most amazing attraction in my opinion is actually the metro station. Known as “the world’s longest art gallery,” the Stockholm Metro features more than ninety stations with unique art designs, each resembling a free and open art exhibition gallery. This time I went to some of the most famous art stations to take pictures. The Stadion Station, famous for the Rainbow Tunnel, is the most popular photo hotspot for its rainbow murals symbolizing freedom and hope; Tekniska Högskolan Station is full of science and geometric elements, giant polyhedral installations with cave-style platforms are full of futuristic feeling; Solna Centrum Station is known for its bright red caves and green forest murals. If you want to get beautiful photos, I highly recommend you choose to go after 8pm. Compared to busy commuting hours during the day, there are significantly fewer passengers at night, making it easier to capture empty platforms and complete compositions. Especially at popular stations like the Stadion, Solna Centrum and Tekniska Högskolan, the crowds are significantly reduced after dusk on weekdays, and you can slowly find angles to take pictures without worrying about someone getting into the camera. Transportation is also very convenient, with the purchase of an SL public transport ticket and you can freely explore different art stations on the metro. It is recommended to reserve half a day to a day to arrange an “art metro route” to take pictures station by station to enjoy different styles of works. Best of all, this attraction requires almost no additional tickets, and you can enjoy world-class public art just by taking the subway. What’s more exciting than having your final fika in Stockholm at a konditori that has been open since 1928? Having your final fika at a konditori that comes with a cat theme, of course. 📍 Address: Kungsgatan 55, 111 22 Stockholm, Sweden Welcome to Vete-Katten, one of Stockholm's most beloved and historic cafés. "Vete-Katten" is actually an old Swedish expression and the café's famous logo features a ginger cat. Anyway, that was good enough for me. More importantly, there were pastries. Lots of pastries. An almost unreasonable number of pastries. The display counters were packed with every imaginable Scandinavian temptation. There were cinnamon buns, cardamom buns, custard-filled buns, cream-filled buns, cakes, tarts, cookies, and various creations whose names I didn't know but was willing to learn through extensive sampling. And then we saw it. Princess Cake. The legendary Prinsesstårta. The beautiful pale-green cake dusted with powdered sugar that had somehow managed to evade us throughout our trip. My brother and I had nearly given up hope. Earlier in Malmö, we had spotted one at Malmö Saluhall but decided to save the experience for later. As the days passed, we began regretting that decision. Every bakery we entered seemed determined to offer everything except Princess Cake. It was becoming a personal feud. Then suddenly, there it was. Like a green sugary beacon of hope. Our regret immediately disappeared. Actually, by this point we had already visited several konditori during our stay in Stockholm, and I was seriously considering skipping any additional pastries. My brother looked at me. Raised one eyebrow. And asked, "You're not ordering a cake?" I would like to say I resisted. I did not. Recognizing my own lack of mental fortitude, I promptly ordered a Chocolate Torta along with a cup of Swedish Hot Chocolate. Resistance is difficult when surrounded by cake. The hot chocolate arrived decorated with a delightful cat design made from chocolate powder. It was such a charming touch and proof that Vete-Katten takes its feline branding seriously. Even the beverages participate. The café itself was gorgeous. Walking inside felt like stepping into another era. The elegant interiors, chandeliers, mirrors, woodwork, and old-fashioned décor captured the glamour and sophistication of the 1920s beautifully. Some cafés try to recreate a vintage atmosphere. Vete-Katten doesn't need to. It simply is vintage. The place was absolutely packed, which suggested that this level of popularity is probably normal. The operation ran like a well-rehearsed ballet, with separate counters for takeaway and dine-in customers efficiently handling the constant flow of hungry visitors. There was also a lunch menu available. But let's be honest. We were there for fika, not vegetables. My brother ordered a custard bun and, naturally, a cardamom bun. He also switched to Bryggkaffe, Sweden's beloved brewed filter coffee. This development occurred only after I pointed out the irony of him drinking tea in a country famous for its coffee. Everywhere else in the world, he happily drinks coffee. In Sweden? Tea. The logic escaped me. Thankfully, he corrected course before leaving the country. Every pastry and cake was delicious. Rich without being heavy, sweet without being overwhelming, and clearly made with tremendous care. We took our time savoring everything while I photographed the pastries from every possible angle. At some point, I became concerned that I had taken more photos than bites. The staff, however, appeared completely unfazed. Judging by their relaxed expressions, they have probably seen every type of pastry enthusiast imaginable over the decades. After all, when you've been operating since 1928, you've survived world wars, economic crises, changing food trends, the arrival of social media, and thousands upon thousands of tourists photographing cakes before eating them. A person taking twenty pictures of a Princess Cake is probably one of the least surprising things they'll see all week. And honestly, I can't blame anyone. One of the most special experiences of this Nordic tour is taking an overnight train from Copenhagen to Stockholm via Malmö. It’s actually very convenient to get to Malmö from Copenhagen Central Station in about 40 minutes or so. Then transfer to the SJ night train at night, sleep and then arrive in the center of Stockholm the next morning, for those who don't want to catch a flight and want to save money on a hotel for a night, it's quite worth trying. This time my friend and I directly booked a 3-person compartment, however only the two of us were actually staying, so the space was more comfortable than expected. On average, it costs about HK$700 per person, including transportation and overnight accommodation, which I think is quite reasonable for Nordic prices. Before getting in the car I was actually a little worried if it would be old or unclean, but after entering the cabin it felt quite surprising. Although the cabin is small, the design is quite practical, with three beds, upper, middle and lower, with pillows, duvets, hangers and small storage space, which can fit two large suitcases. The overall maintenance is good and the environment is cleaner than expected. In terms of amenities, each truck has a separate washroom, while the bathrooms are shared. When I woke up in the morning I had a look and both the washroom and bathroom were kept quite clean and the basic supplies were complete. This level of hygiene is quite good for a long overnight train. After a night drive, the train travels all the way north from southern Sweden. The train wobbles a little as it moves, but instead it feels like a sleeping cradle and I slept quite well myself. When I woke up the next morning, I opened the curtains and saw the scenery of the Swedish countryside slowly moving backwards, which felt completely different from flying, more of a travel flavor. If it were purely for speed comparison, the plane would certainly be faster. But including getting to the airport, security check, waiting and transportation time, it may not be too far apart. Most importantly, the night train goes directly from the city center to the city center, wakes up and arrives at your destination, the whole thing is really much easier. (Taking out my phone to snap photos, photographer mode activated📸) It’s not just one or two stations that amaze, every single station feels like it’s been lovingly crafted. Over 90 out of 100 metro stations feature art installations🎨 The efforts of 150+ artists are buried in these 110 kilometers of tunnels Truly a "subway art museum" without a doubt! 🌟Here comes the wild Blue Line: Exposes the original carved rock walls Instantly turning you into a cave explorer🦇 At T-Centralen station, blue vines crawl all over the walls So serene it feels like falling into a deep-sea dream💙 🌈Red Line surprises: The giant rainbow dome at Stadion station Officially said to help ease underground phobia (I personally felt so warmed by it😭) 🌲Solna Centrum station: Striking red and green clash! Feels like stepping into a Nordic fairy tale forest secret🌳 ♟️Kungsträdgården station: Black and white checkerboard floor is so photogenic! Sweden's Old Town (Gamla Stan) is the heart of Stockholm, boasting a rich history and charming streets.
