USA Arkansas Ouachita Mountains Queen Wilhelmina Mossy Ridge
#bucketlistdestinations Queen Wilhelmina State Park, perched on Rich Mountain (2,681 ft) in the Ouachita Mountains, is Arkansas’s “castle in the clouds.” I stayed at the Queen Wilhelmina Lodge ($110–$160/night, card accepted) and hiked the Mossy Ridge Trail at sunrise. The 2.2-mile loop starts behind the lodge and winds through a forest of shortleaf pine and oak, with a thick carpet of moss on the north-facing slopes.
The trail is mostly flat, but the moss hides tree roots—I wore hiking boots and was glad for the traction. I carried 1 liter of water; there’s a water fountain at the lodge, but not on the trail. Entrance to the park is free, but the lodge has a $5 “facilities use” fee for day visitors (payable at the front desk).
Kindness beat: a lodge employee gave me a thermos of coffee and told me about the “ghost lights” that sometimes appear on the ridge at night—“old miners, they say, still looking for gold.”
My take: Queen Wilhelmina is a blend of history and nature. The moss here feels ancient, like it’s been holding the mountain together for centuries. Should we preserve historic lodges in state parks, even if they’re expensive to maintain?

Beautiful View

Bow Lake is actually very easy to get to, which is one reason it’s so popular with visitors of all ages, including families and young travelers.
🚗 1. Right Beside the Highway
Bow Lake is located along the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93), about:
38 km (30 min) north of Lake Louise
93 km (1 hr 15 min) south of Jasper
There’s a clearly marked parking lot directly off the highway. No 4x4 or hiking required.
🚶 2. Short Walks from the Parking Area
From the parking lot, it’s only a 1–2 minute walk to the lakeshore.
You get amazing views of the lake and surrounding mountains without hiking.

Petite-Nation River
#holidayitinerary
The Petite-Nation River: Name origin: The name “Petite-Nation” refers to the Weskarini Algonquin people—also known as the "people of the little nation"—who inhabited this region of Quebec . Course & history: Stretching ~97 km, the river winds from the Laurentians into the Ottawa River. Along its banks, historic developments such as a sawmill at Chutes du Diable and the now-gone village of North Nation Mills once thrived . On rainbows by rivers. Rainbows, of course, are formed when sunlight refracts through raindrops, creating a colorful arc. River valleys—especially those with moisture, mist, or post-rain conditions—are naturally conducive settings for such visual treats. Many rivers and streams around Ontario and Quebec are occasionally graced by rainbows, even if not widely documented.
