Where to go for summer escape in August? These places are cool and healing
When it comes to escaping the summer heat, most people wouldn't put Jixi, Guangyuan, or Wuzhong in the top tier. But these low-key destinations have an August perceived temperature 5–8℃ lower than popular cities, and you won't encounter crowds. With high-speed rail covering a 2-hour radius and comprehensive remote flight access, they offer an incredibly wide range of experiences, from bustling city life to secluded plateau paradises.
01 Golog Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Qinghai
In summer, the meadows of Nianbaoyuze are as green as if a saturation filter has been turned up. I went in early August; it was 18℃ during the day, perfect for a light jacket, but by evening, as the temperature dropped, a windbreaker was necessary.
⏰ The light is softest before 10 AM, and the lake's reflection is like a mirror. After noon, the strong winds break it up.
📍 Follow the boardwalk to the second viewing platform. The angle is better than the first, and there are fewer people.
⚠️ Don't pitch a tent by the lake overnight. The temperature difference can drop below 10℃, and heavy dew can easily fog up camera lenses. The First Bend of the Yellow River is in Dari County. Climb the hillside at dusk, and the river bend is dyed golden by the sunset. That kind of tranquility cannot be captured by a phone, not even a tenth of it. The road conditions are generally poor, so it's recommended to rent an SUV with high ground clearance for peace of mind.
🚄 It's about a 5-hour drive from Xining, but the scenery along the way is worth it.
02 Jiangmen City | Guangdong
Kaiping Diaolou is a place that made me say, "Wow, this is amazing." I originally thought it was just a few old buildings, but I ended up spending an entire afternoon in Zili Village. At 5 PM, the sunlight streamed diagonally through the diaolou windows, and the light and shadows on the ground looked like scenes from an old movie.
🍜 The sesame paste sold by the old lady in the village is freshly ground and so thick it can cling to a spoon. At CNY 5 a bowl, it's better than any trendy internet-famous shop.
⚠️ Don't just visit the main cluster of buildings. Walk deeper into the village, and you'll find several undeveloped diaolou with waist-high weeds. It's so quiet you can only hear birds chirping, and that sense of ruin is even more appealing.
🚄 It's about a 1-hour drive from Jiangmen city center. Renting a car is recommended, as bus services are pitifully infrequent.
03 Kunming City | Yunnan
Many people use Kunming as a transit point, which I think is a waste. August is mushroom season, and I came to Kunming specifically for the food. Q: Which mushroom hotpot is reliable? A: Don't go to those flashy chain restaurants. Look for old shops near the wet markets that have been open for over 10 years, like those around Zhuanxin Market. The broth is rich, the mushrooms are fresh, and you can eat your fill for about CNY 80 per person. Q: How to choose between Dianchi Lake and Dongchuan Red Land? A: It's too rushed to visit both places in one day. I suggest that if you only have one day, go to Daguan Park in the morning to see the lotus flowers, and then climb Xishan Mountain in the afternoon for a panoramic view of Dianchi Lake. It's much more comfortable than squeezing onto Haigeng Dam to sunbathe.
⏰ Dongchuan Red Land is best visited in autumn. August is the rainy season, and the soil color is darker, so you won't get those vibrant colors seen in promotional photos. As for Kunming World Expo Garden, you can take your parents there, but if you're going alone, bypass it. The tickets aren't cheap, and it's just like a big park inside.
📍 Choose accommodation around Cuihu Lake. In the evening, you can stroll to Wenlin Street for barbecue, soaking in the lively atmosphere.
04 Guangyuan City | Sichuan
Jianmen Pass is a place that left me "exhausted but thoroughly impressed." Decision-making comparison: enter from the north gate or the south gate? I've walked both. Entering from the south gate has more gentle slopes, suitable for families. Entering from the north gate leads directly to Bird Road, with steps so steep you need to hold the railing, but the scenery is absolutely stunning. With the wind blowing on the ridge, the entire Shu Road unfolds before your eyes.
⏰ It's recommended to arrive before 8 AM. It's cooler, and you can avoid the large tour groups.
🍜 The old tofu shop in Jianmen Town at the foot of the mountain serves douhua rice with chopped chili sauce. It's simple but delicious, about CNY 15 per person.
⚠️ Don't buy those "glass skywalk" projects included in the package tickets. They're just a few pieces of glass laid on a platform, not very interesting.
🚄 A taxi from Guangyuan Station to the scenic area takes about 40 minutes, or a shared ride costs CNY 30 per person.
05 Jixi City | Heilongjiang
Jixi in August is as refreshing as a natural air-conditioned room. If you're with family, I recommend heading straight to Xingkai Lake. The beach is gentle, and the water is shallow, so kids can play all afternoon. There are grilled fish stalls along the shore, selling fresh white fish seasoned with salt and cumin, so fragrant that passersby will stop. If you're alone or with a partner, the Hukou direction is more recommended. Walk two kilometers along the riverside path; the river water is crystal clear and green, and the woods are cool, ten times more comfortable than staying in the city.
⏰ Go to Xingkai Lake after 3 PM. The sun isn't as harsh, and the lake shimmers, making for great photos even against the light.
⚠️ Don't buy those vacuum-packed "lake delicacies" at the scenic area entrance. They're expensive and not tasty. Buy freshly processed ones at the town's wet market for half the price.
🚄 It's about a 2.5-hour high-speed train ride from Harbin to Jixi. Renting a car upon arrival makes things much more convenient.
06 Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture | Xinjiang
The blue of Sayram Lake—you have to see it with your own eyes to understand what "no filter needed" truly means.
📍 Don't stop near the East Gate to take photos with the crowd. Drive 20 minutes towards the South Gate, and there's a stretch of shoreline with almost no tourists. Water birds fly in flocks, and it's so quiet you can hear the sound of the lake water lapping against the shore. I arrived in the afternoon, and the sun made the lake a light blue. By 6 PM, as the mountain shadows fell, the lake turned deep blue, as if it had changed its face. Anjihai Grand Canyon is in Jinghe County, about a 2-hour drive from Sayram Lake. The canyon's textures are like the veins of the earth, stunning when shot with a drone, but a phone can also manage. Wenquan County was a pleasant surprise. Soaking in a wild hot spring amidst the mountains and rivers—the water isn't scalding but very comfortable, washing away all fatigue.
⚠️ Accommodation around Sayram Lake in August is very tight. Book a week in advance, otherwise, you'll only find yurts, which are generally not as comfortable.
🍜 The pilaf in Bole city center has tender lamb and distinct rice grains, served with a small dish of spicy red pepper. Eating it brings immense satisfaction.
07 Wuzhong City | Ningxia
Qingtongxia Yellow River Grand Canyon gave me a new understanding of the term "Northwest." I arrived at 9 AM, and the wind on the river was strong, so a long-sleeved shirt was necessary. As you take a boat deeper into the canyon, the rock formations on both banks are eroded into various shapes. There's a section called "Yellow River Sleeping Buddha," which truly looks like a person lying down when viewed from the side.
⏰ After 2 PM, the light is too harsh, and photos are prone to overexposure, so it's recommended to go in the morning.
🍜 Wuzhong's morning tea culture is impressive. A bowl of ramen with Eight Treasures Tea and beef can last until 11 AM. I recommend "Guoqiang Shouzhua." The hand-grabbed lamb is fatty but not greasy. Dip it in vinegar and garlic, and it's so delicious you'll lick your fingers.
⚠️ There are electric carts in the scenic area. Don't walk; the distance is not short, and walking for half an hour under the hot sun is quite tiring.
🚄 It's about a 20-minute high-speed train ride from Yinchuan to Wuzhong. A taxi from the station to the scenic area costs CNY 30.
08 Yangzhou City | Jiangsu
Yangzhou in August is indeed hot, but visiting during off-peak times offers a better experience than in spring or autumn. Go to Slender West Lake at 7 AM. The lotus flowers still have dew on them, and after a walk under the willows, you won't even break a sweat. Walk along the lake to Twenty-Four Bridge. There's a section of stone steps in the middle that gets scorching hot, but once you turn into the bamboo path, it instantly cools down. I went to Geyuan Garden in the afternoon. The rockeries in the garden are cleverly arranged. Sitting in the waterside pavilion with a cup of tea, you can daydream for half an hour.
🍜 "Jiangjiaqiao Jiaomian Guan" next to Heyuan Garden serves shrimp roe dumpling noodles with a fresh broth. At CNY 8 a bowl, it's a hundred times better than a hotel buffet for breakfast.
⏰ Go to Dongguan Street in the evening. The crowds have thinned, the lanterns are lit, and the bluestone paths glow. Walk from one end of the street to the other, buy a osmanthus cake, and eat it as you stroll—pure comfort.
⚠️ Don't take a pedicab at the scenic area entrance. The prices are expensive, and they tend to take detours. A taxi's starting fare can get you to the next spot.
Conclusion
These 8 places, from plateau lakes to Lingnan diaolou, from border wetlands to Jiangnan gardens, offer a rich selection for August. Sayram Lake and Jianmen Pass are where I most want to go right now. How about you? Share your summer escape destinations in the comments.
