Switzerland Road Trip: A Relaxing Stop to Snap Photos at a Sheep Farm along the Biel / Pieterlen / Lengnau Route Calling all road trip lovers who enjoy scenic drives and the slow life! If you're driving along the route between Biel/Bienne, Pieterlen, Lengnau, and Meinisberg in the Canton of Bern, Switzerland, I highly recommend pinning this roadside stop. Along both sides of the road, the sight that will make you want to pull over immediately is the massive, lush green pasture filled with adorable flocks of sheep happily grazing. This is perfectly set against the backdrop of the Jura Mountains and local Swiss-style farmhouses. It's especially stunning during spring when the yellow dandelions are in full bloom all around. Trust me, every angle you shoot will look like it came straight out of a postcard! 📌 Location & Travel Tips Location/Route: The roundabout connecting the highways between Biel, Meinisberg, Pieterlen, and Lengnau (it's very easy to spot the blue roundabout traffic signs). Getting There: Perfect for a self-drive road trip. There's a small field path next to the agricultural plots where you can walk down to take close-up photos with the meadows and the sheep. Atmosphere: Quiet, incredibly natural, with a soothing panoramic view of the stretching mountain range. ⚠️ Traffic Rules & Precautions for Roadside Parking (Very Important!) Stopping on the side of the road: According to Swiss law, parking on main roads outside city limits is prohibited. However, you can make a temporary stop (Stopping/Halten) to quickly hop out for photos, provided it's not a no-stopping zone (no yellow edge lines or prohibition signs). Safe Stopping Points: Always use your turn signal and pull over as close to the edge/shoulder as possible to stay out of traffic. Do not block the visibility of other vehicles, and absolutely never block the entrances or exits of local agricultural lands. Approaching the animals: The farms have fences for safety. Please keep your distance and photograph the sheep from outside the fence. Do not cross the fence or feed the animals without permission.

Weissenstein (1,285 m) to Chasseral (1,607 m) is 18 km, 5.5–6 h, +1,070 m / –70 m if you count the Oberdorf leg; the ridge itself is rolling pasture with occasional fir strips. Signage is yellow on white, impossible to lose. The first third is a Planetenweg (scale-model solar system, fun if slow). Cross the language border at Montagne de Romont (French begins). Chasseral has a hotel-restaurant (coffee 5 CHF, rösti 24 CHF), card fine. Water: fountains at farms every 4–5 km, but carry 1.5 L on hot days. No wild camping in Canton Bern/Jura rules—use the Chasseral hotel or descent to St-Imier. I walked end of June; orchids in the meadows, but the ridge wind was 30 km/h. Mistake: I packed a 20 kg backpack expecting huts—none needed, day-hike it with a 5 kg daypack and train out from Biel side. Discussion: does the Jura crest feel like a “lesser” Alps alternative, or is its pastoral ridge exactly the point?
