I have to hand it to "Shirahige Waterfall" as the most breathtaking and uniquely beautiful waterfall in Hokkaido. Tucked away as a hidden gem in Biei, you can toss out your typical image of a green forest waterfall. The true highlight here is the pastel turquoise water cascading down the rocky cliffs. It looks so soft and graceful, resembling an old man's "white beard," which is exactly how the waterfall got its name. The surrounding atmosphere is incredibly peaceful, with the sound of the waterfall perfectly harmonizing with nature. You can take a deep breath and fill your lungs with pure, crisp air. The hidden charm that made me completely fall in love with this place is the deep, vibrant blue pool at the bottom, much like the famous Blue Pond. This is because the water naturally contains aluminum minerals. It gets even better if you visit in winter! The cliff walls freeze into icicles, creating a stunning contrast with the crystal-clear blue water and the pure white snow. It's mesmerizingly beautiful—you'll feel like you've stepped right into the world of Frozen. Every photo angle is absolutely stunning, no filters needed. My personal tip for your visit: The best viewpoint for the waterfall is standing right in the middle of the "Blue River Bridge." Looking down from the bridge, you get an epic wide-angle view of the waterfall and the stream flowing straight out as far as the eye can see. (Just make sure to keep a tight grip on your smartphone or camera—the wind up there can be pretty strong!) 🚗 Getting there: The most convenient way is to rent a car and set your GPS to Shirogane Onsen. There's plenty of parking, and it's just a short walk to the bridge. If you're taking public transportation, you can hop on a Dohoku Bus from JR Biei Station and get off at the Shirogane Onsen stop. It takes about 30 minutes. To truly experience Sapporo, I went on the Biei Tour! 🩵 I saw more snow here in Sapporo than I have in my entire 22 years of life ✨ Honestly, the most beautiful spot of this trip was Shirahige Waterfall 💭 It was fascinating how the water cascading down the cliffs literally looked like a white beard! The mystical blue hue of the water flowing beneath the falls was especially breathtaking 💙 I managed to snap some photos in front of the famous trees, too, though the blizzard was so fierce I could barely keep my eyes open 🫣 I also visited the fairy-tale-like village, "Ningle Terrace" in Furano 🌲. It was super slippery and I almost wiped out, but it seriously looked like little cabins where actual fairies live!! To wrap things up, Susukino 🌃 This is where Sapporo's nightlife truly begins! The vibrant neon lights and energetic vibe are absolutely unmatched. Got my mandatory snapshot in front of the iconic "Nikka Sign"!! 💗 And of course, I stuffed my face with delicious sushi, an absolute must for any Japan trip 🍣 I’ll definitely be coming back next winter o̴̶̷̤ ̫ o̴̶̷̤

One thing that needs a lot of planning when you do self driving road trips in Hokkaido is which route you should take and how much the ETC costs. Taking toll roads can be very expensive in Hokkaido and thus, if you choose to take many toll roads during your trip, it would more cost effective if you buy the HEP Hokkaido Expressway Pass instead. For us, during our 8 days self drive trip, I used ChatGPT’s help to calculate the tolls and surprisingly, as we didn’t take many toll roads and also that some toll roads take the same time you will need to take if you use general roads and thus, there is no need to take toll roads to save up the money for another sushi feast. I visited the Blue Pond, a breathtaking scenic spot in Biei, Hokkaido. True to its name, this mystical pond features a vibrant blue water surface that, combined with the standing dead trees, creates a fantastical, picture-perfect landscape. I visited on a slightly cloudy day this time, but thanks to the overcast sky, the light was softer, bringing down the bright blue tones and giving the place a much more mysterious and tranquil vibe—which really left an impression on me. It had a totally different charm compared to a sunny day, making it an incredible experience in its own right. This scenery is truly a special sight you won't easily find anywhere else. The colors and atmosphere created by nature are absolutely one-of-a-kind, and I felt it was a destination well worth the trip. Since its appearance changes depending on the time of day and the weather, it’s a spot you can enjoy no matter how many times you visit. On my way back, I stopped by a nearby spot called Between The Bread. Their hearty burgers were absolutely delicious and hit the spot perfectly after a day of sightseeing. Offering a great combo of stunning natural views and delicious food, this is a highly recommended spot that truly captures the essence of Hokkaido.
