Although the sky in Tromsø was already too bright by mid-April to spot the Northern Lights, heading to the Hopen area in Lofoten—with even less light pollution—allowed us to finally witness a spectacular aurora outburst with our own eyes! By mid-April here in the Arctic Circle, it becomes quite hard to get long, dark nights. However, since the sky isn't completely bright yet, paired with clear weather, you still have a chance to capture the moment the aurora explodes! You have to wait until midnight, and dawn starts breaking around 2 AM, giving you a tight two-hour window. Around 11 PM, long after sunset, faint auroras will gradually appear in the sky. Auroral activity usually peaks just before midnight, so we recommend heading out to wait by 10:30 PM. Temperatures are still quite low, so remember to bring plenty of heavy layers, a thermos with hot water, and a camera tripod!
