Nagoya is usually not part of people's Japan itinerary, especially for first time visitors, it is in my opinion an incredibly underrated city that deserves a visit, maybe not a long stay, but definitely a visit. A gem of the city is Nagoya Castle. It was built in 1615 by Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. I spent a ton of time doing my research before heading to Japan, and I finally picked a hotel I'm super happy with—HOTEL THE LEBEN OSAKA🏨! ✨ The location is absolutely prime! So comfy! ✨ The hotel just opened in 2022, so everything is brand new and spotless. It was such a comfortable stay, giving it a 10/10 for cleanliness!👍🏻 ✨ There are also so many thoughtful little perks! Right by the elevator, there are free toiletries, skincare products, and even eye masks and earplugs up for grabs (available daily from 3 PM to midnight, unlimited!). It's easy to visit on your own, not difficult to get to, and it's one of the Japanese castles I think you should definitely make time for when you're in Kumamoto. If you like Japanese history or want to see a castle with beautiful architecture and a rich history, this place is well worth your time. The castle is striking with its large stone walls and black building contrasting with white, looking much more magnificent than it appears in photos. Inside, there are exhibition areas about the castle's history, including models and various artifacts, so you won't just be taking pictures of the castle, but will gain a deeper understanding of Kumamoto's history. 🚋 My recommended travel tip: If you're coming from JR Kumamoto Station, the easiest and most economical way is to take the Kumamoto City Tram from Kumamoto Ekimae stop and get off at Kumamoto Castle/City Hall. This takes about 20 minutes. From there, walk through the Sakura-no-baba Josaien area for about 15 minutes to reach the castle grounds. If you don't want to walk too much... Another option is to take the Shiromegurin Castle Circle Bus from Kumamoto Station and get off at Ninomaru Parking Lot. The fare is 200 yen for a one-way trip or 500 yen for a one-day pass. Tip: If you get off at Josaien and see a free shuttle bus, you can use it to get to Ninomaru Parking Lot. You don't need to walk the whole way. The free bus runs approximately every 10-15 minutes from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. 💴 Entrance Fee / Hours Adult entrance fee is 800 yen. The castle is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with the last entry at 4:00 PM. The castle tower has a last entry at 4:30 PM. I personally recommend allocating about 2-3 hours, as there's much more to see besides the castle itself. The tram is easy to understand, the fare is inexpensive, and you get to see the Kumamoto city atmosphere along the way. Things to know: The castle suffered heavy damage from the 2016 earthquake, and some areas are still undergoing restoration. Therefore, don't expect to be able to walk through every part like a fully open castle. However, the main sightseeing routes and the tower are still very interesting.
