On checking in I asked was room 61 quiet? Yes I was assured. It overlooked the high street. Traffic and pedestrian noise was the first thing you heard when you entered the room. Give reception their due they did find me another room. Breakfast next day our group of six was told we could not sit in the main dining room as it was fully booked with a coach party. We were given a round table in the lounge. The staff laid it up for five, which was strange as we were six. Next day the table we were meant to sit at again in the lounge was given to four walk in's. The four finished their breakfast and then set up computers for a meeting. Our group arrived at 8.30 the allotted time to be told there was no table set up for us. A member of staff pulled together a small round wobbly table and a oblong table for four. And walked away. The table area was to small for the six of us, so we moved tables around to make a workable table. I asked to speak to the restaurant manager who was less than helpful. The excuse given was there was no record of our booking in the restaurant system. Which was odd given we were guests and had breakfast the day before. When I questioned this and explained we were told the previous day that round table was going to be our location, the reply was the person knew nothing about the table being allocated to us. We had to sit having breakfast and listen to a meeting being held by the four people on the round table. The next day at breakfast a table in the lounge was laid up for us, but the room was full of the coach party who were sitting chatting in the lounge waiting to be picked up by the bus. We were moved to the dining room. From that point it just went down hill. We had to wait for ever for the table to be prepared as every time new residents came into the dining room the staff stopped preparing our table to go off and find tables for the newly arrived. Requesting more tea or coffee came to nothing. I asked for porridge . After 30 minutes I asked where it was to be told there was only one person in the kitchen, so there was a wait. Odd given the hotel knew it was fully booked, why only one person. The porridge arrived 40 minutes after I ordered it and when I was finished my breakfast. The breakfast staff and in particular the managers were unhelpful and disorganised. On the positive side the hotel is in a wonderful location opposite the cathedral and has plenty of parking. The rooms are well appointed. If there is a coach party staying booking the restaurant in the evening is impossible you have to sit in the lounge and if breakfast is anything to go by you will be forgotten.
Very Good
