We visited for a weekend break, a truly delightful building packed full of history. Staff were friendly and kind. Food was fab and service excellent. Warm and cosy with open fires and slept in the same room Charles Dickens had many years ago. Lovely clean rooms with nice fluffy towels and comfy bed. Would definitely recommend .

came to eat here with my family for it’s so called “tapas” night. started the meal off being welcomed into a dark cold room as the staff had not yet turned the light on or lit the fire even though we arrived on time to our booking. as there was a large group of us we decided to order one of everything off the menu, later to find out this would be our biggest mistake. cold tasteless under seasoned food, the cherry on top was the raw rice from the so called paella. as we were greatly disappointed we decided to speak to the owner to voice our opinion and was greeted with the rudest reply possible. she did not care for what we had to say and was straight on the defence demanding that her food was up to her standards but clearly not up to anyone else’s. they then proceeded to light the fire and gas out the entire room with smoke leading to a family member having to leave the room as it was triggering asthma. as i clearly couldn’t have a civilised conversation with the wife i decided to try and speak to the husband. to no ones surprise he was just as vile as the wife except this time he decided to use force to get us to leave the property by pushing me out of the room. i asked for him not to touch me and his response was “i didn’t” even though my entire family was witness. as you can imagine we were so disgusted by human behaviour at this point we left the premises. do not eat here or stay here unless you would like to be assaulted.

What a wonderful place! Even if it were just the history it would make a compelling stay. I tell my American friends about the fact it is built around stones that are 1000 years older than Stonehenge and the building has been there for nearly 900 years and they want to go. On top of that the staff/owners are lovely and breakfast was yummy. Not easy for anyone with a disability, as I have because the floors are uneven (note age) and the stairs are steep. But if you get past that it is still worth it. Off the beaten track, quirky, full of character. Lovely place. You need to visit.

We stayed here for 4 nights in 2022 while property hunting, and we were really pleased to be back. Sadly only one night this time, but everything is as good as before. Hosts Lynn and Simon, bar comic...John (hasn't changed!) all welcoming with comfy rooms, excellent beds and linens, wonderful food . We will be back for more time as soon as we can!

Went for lunch, twice this month. Lovely fresh food. Really good service. Very interesting restaurant with so much history. It is exceptionally clean and we can’t wait to go back. We go to many old pubs and restaurants but have never found one so clean.

What a terrible and unwelcoming experience from the staff. We changed a booking from 6pm to 7pm over the phone and we received verbal confirmation that this was changed and all was okay 2weeks before arrival. Once arriving, we were shown to our table and rudely told we were late and said even though we might be right, we put them in a predicament. Blaming us for their poor management and THEIR mistake. To sit us down and then try to humiliate all of us in front of every other customer is disgusting. If they also believed they were right, which they weren't, they only called us 15minutes before our supposedly time slot was over. Why not before? They also never said we were late, which we weren't, on the phone and were happy we were nearly there. What a terrible experience. We will never attempt to go here again as these people believe they are right as you can see from other reviews.

We had a booking for 7pm that we had confirmed by the owner and the owners wife- on the way to the restaurant for 7pm we had a phone call asking if we were still coming- which we said yes. There were no booking confirmation after we had changed it from 6-7 weeks beforehand. As well as this adding a charge of £10 for our own cake to bring??As we had arrived we got seated to then be told we were late and in the wrong and had been told that we had then caused an inconvenience and that they couldn’t seat us due to them booking more tables. There was mismanagement and miscommunication off the staff there and they had treated us horribly and made us feel humiliated due them causing such an issue when we were sat down and in front of many other customers. Awful customer service.

We stayed at the lovely Oxenham Arms in early July and had a wonderful stay. The room was perfect, bed comfortable and the bits of history scattered throughout were perfect. JD was welcoming and the conversation in the pub was memorable. The food was delicious... we had the fish and chips, scallops, brie salad, and many other items. Highly recommend for a stay or a meal in the greater Devon area.
