We've been here twice, the first time 7 years ago. Was lovely, so we decided to head back. And unfortunately, we won't visit a 3rd time. It's a great place to visit but there are a few things that folks should know before going. It's still a gorgeous place and now the Azura, a sister hotel, has opened up beside Hotel Villas Playa Samara. Staff were lovey, particularly bar staff, housekeeping and maintenance staff, and giving a huge shout-out to Wendy (who books the excursions) as she went above and beyond. The beach is beautiful; enough chairs though it's a good idea to pick out chairs early if you want a place in the shade. The grounds are also stunning and well maintained, tons of birds around and lots of iguanas. Very cool to see. There are great excursions you can book through the hotel directly, and we found that the price was often quite a bit better than other tour providers. And the guides were so sweet and lovely. Food was okay, there was always something good to eat. However, often times you did not have utensils and/or glasses or mugs on the table. Getting water was often tough, let alone a refill (seemed next to impossible). Again, it's not that it was bad, but staff would often be hard to track down; it wasn't intuitive to refill water glasses if they were empty. Not a huge deal, but we'd often have to refill our own waters while at dinner. We also found that staff ate at peak meal times and would often be served first. All things that are easy to overlook, so not a huge issue. The main thing - be sure to pack medications you might need, particularly for stomach issues related to food poisoning of some sort. This can happen anywhere, of course. But, not only had we experienced it, but a few other couples at the same time. That said, the resort was quite helpful and did check in with us (thank you again to Wendy!), and we were able to get additional medications (Gravol, Advil, etc.) at the store on site. But - just be prepared, bring something strong to help you through it just in case! We would recommend Hotel Villas Playa Samara to folks, but just be aware of those few things.
