Mercure Orange

Orange|2.19km from Harold Nicholas Walk
Stayed for three nights which included both Friday and Saturday nights. Motel is well situated to shops, cafes and restaurants being just one block back from the main street. The motel is also right next door to the huge Orange Ex-Services Club which has a very large open rooftop bar and dining area that hosts live bands on Friday and Saturday nights and a DJ on the Sunday afternoon we stayed. We received a phone call from someone at the Mercure three days before our arrival to alert us to the fact that the club would be playing live music on Friday and Saturday nights possibly up to midnight and ”was this alright?”. I responded not really but obviously they can do nothing about this and it was far too late for us to try and book alternative accommodation given it was during Food Week and the Forage weekend. There was some comfort in the fact that the music finished at about 10-30pm on both evenings (rather than midnight) but there was no chance of sleeping before that time given that the music was very loud and the lead singers couldn't hold a note and were ruining all the songs. As for the motel. Our room was on the first floor (there was an elevator) facing the free car park with a common walkway out the front so that you had to keep the blinds down on the main window to gain privacy. The room was furnished with a queen sized bed (very comfortable) that had bedside tables and reading lights either side of it. There was a long desk/table attached to one wall that had two chairs and a cupboard that contained a jug, toaster, microwave, minibar fridge, cups, glasses, bowls and cutlery. There was another cupboard at the opposite end that contained an iron and an ironing board. There was also a very large flat screen TV attached to the wall above the desk/table. The bathroom was functional although the vanity basin area was small with little room to store toiletries. The shower (pressure was good) had both rainwater and hand held nozzles but there was no door which meant that water cascaded out onto the floor and the nearby toilet. Both the room and the bathroom were very clean and were serviced daily. WIFI was free and worked well but you had to logon every day using a specified password. Staff at check-in and check-out were very pleasant and helpful.

We stayed 5 nights in the one bedroom wheelchair accessible apar**ent which was a pleasure to stay in. It had a full kitchen and washing machine, king bed with room next to the right hand side of the bed to park a wheelchair. The large bathroom is fully wheelchair accessible with a left hand transfer toilet. The well equipped kitchen is average height with a wheel-under sink, low drawer dishwasher, and washer/dryer at wheelchair height located in a cupboard in the kitchen. With some moving of furniture, it was possible to access the large balcony. The unit was very clean and in a great location - just 5 minutes wheel/walk to the cultural precinct & pubs. The onsite, undercover carpark was complimentary - >2.1m height clearance. There are a number of wheelchair carpark spaces next to the lifts. The front desk staff were very helpful and staffed the desk until late at night. A nice touch was the pillow menu, pod coffee machine, lovely selection of T2 tea, Camomile tea leaf bags left on our pillow on arrival, and music playing in our room when we arrived. We would definitely stay here again.

Royal Hotel Orange

I visited Orange for the Medieval Festival and because the town seemed so popular, there wasn't much accommodation at a reasonable price available. I paid $75 for a single room with shower but shared toilet. The room was compact and had AC which worked, tv (remote or tv not working), shower that leaked. The downlight above the light did not work. As it is on top of a pub, the music could be heard in the background til 2am and although on the main highway, I only heard one semi-trailer at night. The Royal Hotel is centrally located with two shopping malls nearby and two other pubs within a 5 minute walk. The location can't be beat. The duvet and mattress were very comfortable and whoever was the buyer should be commended for that. Wifi is free and worked sufficiently enough for Facebook. Overall - if you set your expectations low - it is actually alright but if i paid my standard $130 for a night I would have felt cheesed off..If the Royal Hotel put some effort in doing up the place, it would get a higher rating and the ability to charge more. I suggest an ensuite in each room.

Wonderful stay at The Oriana, Professional welcome by Tim at reception who told us about dining, breakfast options and where the best parking was for our room. The room was large and had more than we needed. The beds, pillows, towels, plentiful hot water were wonderful. We dined in the restaurant both evenings and the food was amazing. We also had breakfast both mornings and it was more than adequate. All staff we encountered were friendly and professional. We would certainly stay here again.

WELL WORTH A VISIT My husband and I attended Whitney’s Restaurant at the Remington Hotel on Sunday night and were very pleasantly surprised. We went there with no real expectations as too many “up market “ restaurants in Orange of late have become overpriced in both their food and wine on offer and their service leave a lot to be desired. This was not the case at Whitney’s quite the opposite. The food was not only delicious, but extremely satisfying and reasonably priced. The presentation of the desserts were impeccable and just as delicious as anything I have had at many hatted restaurants in regional and major cities. It was also refreshing to see local wines showcased and at reasonable prices for a change. The staff I must say were very welcoming and extremely professional. Ray did a wonderful job of making us feel comfortable and at ease. Brendon who had only been there for a few weeks was one of the most professional wait staff I had encountered in Orange for quite awhile, whilst also being warm and friendly, a trait very few can achieve in the hospitality industry. Although Whitney’s does not have spectacular views from inside the restaurant, you hardly notice as the decor is not only tasteful contemporary but also warmly inviting. As we live relatively close to this wonderful new restaurant, we will becoming regulars and look forward to trying more of what they have to offer.
