I stayed here for 5 nights in a double room by myself. It was a bit on the small size, but this is a guest house not a hotel. The room itself was very quaint and had everything I needed, including a perfectly good en-suite with a shower. There were also tea and coffee making facilities. The house it's based in is a lovely period house near the centre of Chepstow, it's very well located for both the town and the castle. Continental breakfast was available which was very nice, my only complaint would be that it's only served from 8-9. On my last day I requested it 15 minutes earlier and they were very forthcoming which was great. Overall I had a very lovely stay, and the staff were absolutely fantastic.

5 star hotel, never. Our room had a bath with just a shower head on the wall. Started to run the bath whilst pottering about then went to check it and the water was freezing, the shower head had cold water coming from it and also the sink. Let the owners know so they "boosted the hot water" waited a while and was exactly the same. Cobwebs on the ceiling, room not made up after our first night and also cup's not cleaned after an evening cuppa, obviously no housekeeping here. The carpet where my was getting ready for the evening was stained and dirty, breakfasts were left as a number of our group weren't to to pleased with their black fried eggs. All in all not worth the money, nowhere near and had the cheek to charge us £220 for a 2 night stay. Needless to say that we as a party will not be staying there again and will be looking for alternative accommodation next year as we do this Chepstow trip annually. Stay well clear

Great location for visiting Chepstow. Room was comfortable and the staff were great, nothing was too much trouble - particularly for Olivia who waited until 23.45 hours to enable me to check in after my train journey was substantially delayed. What wonderful service ! In addition award winning Stone Rock pizzeria incorporated within the premises provided great food.

Firstly I’d like to say how pleasant the young guy dealing with the bar was when we arrived and allowing us to put our bikes in our rooms. We were planning to eat within your Pizza restaurant for the evening and while having a drink in the Bar the owner came in at the same time as two cyclists who were on the same ride and in my opinion was extremely rude to them about their bikes and no better addressing her staff, the guy who was looking after the bar / front of house and the young lady who was making up the pizza boxes. If you can be that off with people that earn your living you then don’t deserve to be supported in any other way, hence we eat elsewhere. I stayed in Room 10 and to make a statement as you did about the refurbishment to turn it towards a Boutique Hotel which had a broken window, cobwebs around the ceiling in the bedroom, the toilet wobbled from side to side, the paint work around the skirting hadn’t been finished, I only had shampoo to wash with not shower gel and to be honest the ‘Full English breakfast’ wasn’t that great with over done bacon and a few black bits on your plate that’s kept you guessing what was it supposed to be. Overall it’s a good thing I wasn’t the hotel inspector as they would have lost their Stars!

Staying at “hotel” for work, person who checked us in needs to learn a bit of customer service and how to smile. Decided to order a pizza for dinner from the “famous pizzeria” below and they got the order wrong and when corrected acted like it was a bit was an inconvenience. Can hear the noise from the “restaurant” while in bed. Stay elsewhere.

There is such a missed opportunity in the business sense for First Hurdle. It's perfectly situated with a car park opposite, a great Italian over the road and the shops nearby. But I could not have been more disappointed. A phone call was necessary to be let in even though it was 5 pm, displayed opening time. The website pictures showed nothing of the raw pizzeria interior cum reception. It wasn't even open. When I questioned why I was paying (£85 /night) the same rate as my friends (a couple) because they had 2 breakfasts and me one.....he said jokingly, you can have 2 breakfasts then. Then the room was in desperate need of refurbishment. See pics. Carpet unclean, light pull disgusting, shower blocked...it was hard to sleep. The whole place is run down. Doors to kitchens and store rooms open so chaos could be viewed. Breakfast very poor. With just a little effort this place could be wonderful.

The welcome was very offhand, we were asked to choose breakfast but there was no menu, we were just given 3 options full English, vegetarian or help yourself but no indication of what help yourself consisted of. On entering our room there was a strong smell of urine, the bedside lamps had no bulbs and the staff couldn’t provide any the tv had no remote and the replacement that was supplied didn’t work. The ceiling light was faulty and flashed on and off. We left and asked for a refund

Booked and pre-paid for two rooms for an event in Chepstow castle on 26th August. The booking was confirmed on 20th February. Have just received an email stating that one of the rooms is not available. Not even the courtesy of a phone call. Have tried for hours to get through to them, have left numerous answer phone messages and replied to the email asking them to contact me, but nothing. So not able to cancel the other room, not able to ask for a refund and due to the short notice not able to book elsewhere. MAYBE IF SOMEBODY FROM THE FIRST HURDLE READS THIS AND ACTUALLY CARES ABOUT IT THEY MIGHT GET IN TOUCH WITH ME !
