Popped in to this historic pub to have some lunch after a muddy stroll along the derwent and then on through to castleton.. there's a bit of work goin on so only the restaurant side is open and just doing a good selection of sandwiches and pizza..... but still good beer!

Stayed one night 25 Feb - room 5&6. Due to my own misunderstanding it seemed like i had only booked one room instead of two, Amanda the manager took it in her stride, got us a drink and calmly sorted it out, it was a simple name mistake in the end as i was with my grown up son and the other room was in his name, Amanda was brilliant and took to our lovely rooms, very homely with everything needed for our stay, comfy beds, tea and coffee, tv, free wifi, toiletries and spotlessly clean. Enjoyed a roast beef dinner after a day of walking and exploring the area. Joined in the excellent quiz night and was lucky enough to win bar vouchers which we shared with the rest of the quizzers. Bar staff were very welcoming and great fun. Excellent tasty cooked breakfast with cereal, juice and toast served quickly by pleasant cheerful staff. We very much enjoyed our stay and would definately return, well done Amanda and your lovely team of staff for keeping it a personal stay and making every guest feel welcome and valued.

Clearly a popular place, poor communication from staff. We ordered food and waited 1 hour for it to be served, if we had been informed of the wait we would have gone elsewhere. When the food came out, it wasn’t very hot and peas etc had dried up slightly. An hour wait for food is far beyond what I would expect, especially for ‘pub food’ that is prepared in advance, pies, fish and chips etc. Food was certainly overpriced for what it was. We had a member of our party that has a severe food allergy, we were told that the chef can make any of the dishes free of the allergen and then were later told only certain dishes can be done this way. This didn’t really fill us with confidence in the knowledge that the staff knew how to avoid cross contamination and actually prepare food in accordance to the protocol necessary to isolate allergens. I did also find the attitudes of the staff we dealt with to be quite blasé and unprofessional, no apology for the 1 hour wait and quite a defensive attitude when we asked about allergen free foods. I hope they can educate themselves in the future to understand that people do not choose to be allergic to certain foods and that an individual must do everything possible to avoid allergens or else they will pay the price in the form of side effects and damage to their bodies. In our case, the risk of neurological damage is worth asking those extra questions to avoid, no matter if it does annoy bar staff. We have visited once before, around two years ago and had a wonderful experience, including with the handling of a food allergy - this is why we returned. I wonder if it has changed hands or if perhaps there were different staff working that day. We won’t visit again.

Clean, warm room, friendly staff, excellent breakfast, ideal centre for walking - no need for the car if only staying 2-3 days. Mam's Tor can be walked direct from the pub. Bar food very reasonably priced, given the location, pizza was excellent. Will stay again.

This is the most friendly and comfortable hotel. Spotless clean, warm throughout and the bed was home from home and so were the pillows. Lovely piping hot water for showering etc. lots of storage for belongings. A delicious breakfast every morning. All meals are delicious and home cooked. There was nothing to fault at all. We have eaten here for a good many years, and now we will definitely stay over again.

Our second visit, arrived on a very busy Saturday lunch, found seats and ordered food which was delicious, hot and served in an appropriate time to have been cooked and not microwaved. Service excellent, staff all friendly, great pub to visit if you are in Castleton!

The food was awful. Thin watery tasteless soup, couldn’t have a curry as the kitchen had run out of rice. I’m not sure how a chef could serve something so sub standard. There was one member of staff working very hard, serving at the bar, taking orders, clearing tables etc he was very polite and I didn’t want to complain as he was clearly very busy.

Recently returned from a 2 night stay here. Our first visit to the Peak District and couldn't have chosen a better place to stay. Ideal location, free parking across the road from pub, ideal considering how busy Castleton can be. The staff were very friendly and upon arrival showed us to our room, which was on the ground floor, very quiet considering how busy the pub was. Lovely room, very clean and comfy bed. Breakfast was great. Fresh fruit, cereal, toast, orange juice, and full English to follow and choice of tea or coffee. Very friendly staff. Would definitely recommend and can not wait to return.
