Today, unfortunately, they are a reminder of a threat that is once again present. Ukrainians are not fighting against Russia only for their own country. President Putin invokes the results of the Second World War while seeking to restore the post-war power structure that plunged our country into decades of unfreedom. We remember heroes not to be moved by their fates, but to be inspired by their actions, to draw from them the hope that each of us - with what little we have - can make a significant contribution. We see an uncertain future ahead. That is what they were experiencing at the time. But we need not be afraid! We just have to take responsibility and strengthen our country's defences. And in the end, as history teaches us, all will be well.
