Alternate ROOTS' 49th Annual Meeting & Artists' Retreat
Over the past 49 years of ROOTS’ history, our annual gathering has included art sharing and making, critical and engaging conversations, singing, dancing, the organization’s Annual Business Meeting, and late-night shenanigans!
From
Tuesday, August 5 – Sunday, August 10, 2025
, we're transforming Lutheridge Conference Center in Arden, NC into a hub of creativity, community, and change. It's our time to come together, share our stories, create space, and sow the seeds for a liberated tomorrow.
This year, our theme is
Mapping a North Star: Tools for Present Times
.
we gaze up to the infinite sky
fix our eyes
on hōkūpa`a, the north star
it keeps us grounded and steadfast
rooted in our tradition
we are home
From "New Day" by Kealoha, first Poet Laureate Emeritus of Hawai’i
During ROOTS Week
, we will calibrate our navigation and affirm the tools we need for the world we are in right now. We will sing, swap stories, and enjoy art and performance. We will define our own North Stars, and be guided by justice.
EVERYONE is welcome at ROOTS Week.
EVERYONE attending ROOTS Week – even babies and young children! – must be registered individually. Accommodations are limited, and to make sure attendees are as comfortable as possible we need to have an accurate headcount of who will be staying on campus at Lutheridge. Minors under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
To register families you must complete each registration one after another. Please list your family members as 'roommates' and our registration team will know to house you all together.
It is the mission of Alternate ROOTS to strive to be allies in the elimination of all forms of oppression, and we cultivate an intentionally diverse and inclusive community. We embrace all people – across race, gender, sexuality, religion, immigration status, ability, or any other marginalized identity. We actively resist racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, Islamophobia, ableism, and all other forms of oppression.
We want you to bring your whole self to ROOTS Week! Please be prepared to take whatever space / do whatever homework / seek whatever support you may need before and during ROOTS Week to be “respectfully responsible” for your own work as an ally in our collective liberation. All ROOTS spaces follow our Community Agreements & updated Safety Guidelines. More information will be sent to registrants prior to attending.
Youth Village for ALL children under 12!
Building on the incredible success of the Youth Village of ROOTS Week 2024, Youth Village will be available for Youth ages 0-12.
Youth Village will offer developmentally appropriate engagement and enrichment for youth during ROOTS Week daily programming, while encouraging artistic sharing with the youth from our membership body.
We want parents and caregivers of young and older children to know that there will be a space for your young person to be during ROOTS Week programming. We will also welcome and need your support for the Youth Village Team throughout the week.
Please make sure you answer the question in the Registration form about how many children will accompany you, their ages, and whether they will participate in Youth Village.
COVID Protocols for ROOTS Week 2025
As we plan gatherings, our goal is to move in a spirit of collective care and focus on minimizing risks before, during, and after our time together. We are asking event participants – including staff – to follow these protocols as part of our meeting agreements. Thank you for helping us create COVID conscious, safer spaces for our beloved community! COVID protocols are currently being reviewed before ROOTS Week 2025. If updated COVID protocols prevent you from attending ROOTS Week after registration, your registration will be refunded.
