Moorish Castle

Mauros Castle is the only Moorish-style castle in Europe built in the 17th century by the Moorites. Built in the 7th century, it looks a bit like a mini-Great Wall and is across the bank from the Pena Palace.

Moorish castle is located on the top of Mount Sintra overlooking the town. The castle was built during the Arab occupation of the Iberian Peninsula in the 1st century. After the Portuguese army captured Lisbon in 1147, the castle surrendered to the Christian army. In 1910, the Moorish castle was listed as a national monument in Portugal.
