San Francisco is a subtropical Mediterranean climate with the world-famous San Francisco Bay Area, Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman's Wharf. The climate is warm in winter and cool in summer, with plenty of sunshine, close to many American national parks (such as Yosemite National Park) and Napa Valley, California's wine region. It is known as "the most popular city for Americans." The Spanish discovered this place in 1769 and joined the United States in 1848. In the middle of the 19th century, San Francisco developed rapidly in the gold rush, and the overseas Chinese called it "Golden Mountain". Later, it was changed from Melbourne to Australia and renamed "San Francisco." As of July 2014, San Francisco has a population of approximately 850,000, including 180,000 Chinese. It is one of the regions with the highest density of Chinese in the Western Hemisphere. The total number of Chinese is second only to New York.
