With over 6 million volumes, the Los Angeles Public Library and its 71 branches, is one of the largest publicly funded library systems in the world. Any California resident (permanent or not) is eligible for a free library card.The Central Library was built in 1926 and, following a devastating, arson initiated fire, extensively renovated and expanded between 1988 and 1993. The building contains notable art and architecture. Free, docent led tours are available.
