What people are saying:

This is an incredible museum with an active bitumen pit. We just happened to visit the third Tuesday of the month and the $15 ticket was $0!! We paid $5 for a 3D movie about the bitumen pit. This movie tells you great history of the asphalt crater and museum. Loved it. I was stunned by the incredible skeleton of prehistoric mammals. Too much. They have a great jungle type area inside the museum. Knowledgeable volunteers walking around answering questions. Fun interactive activities that made it enjoyable for all. We parked our car behind the building ($ 15) and walked a short distance to the entrance. I had no idea what parking was in front of the park. Wheelchair access was very convenient in the museum. They have a great gift shop. Everything was very nice. There is a working lab in the museum and volunteers are cleaning out small bones taken from the asphalt crater. Tourists can see them working through the glass. There is an area in front with ropes enclosing the active asphalt craters that creak. It was wonderful!!! This is a must see in Los Angeles.

Additional Information

Introduction

The La Brea Tar Pits are the world's only active, urban Ice Age excavation site. They are a physical formation in Los Angeles resulting from tens of thousands of years' worth of asphalt seeping up from reserves far below the earth’s surface. The pits are a goldmine of preserved remains of Ice Age animals that fell into and then could not escape from the tar. Inside, the Page Museum is where the best fossils, animals, and plants that have been discovered here, including mammoths, saber-toothed cats, and dire wolves, are showcased. Visitors can see actual excavators and scientists working on the fossils found in the Tar Pits. The entire tar pits complex is a very popular destination for tourists and locals alike, especially those with young children.
