Almost lost in the middle of a small and always busy strip mall on Sawtelle just north of Olympic Boulevard, Restaurant 2117 is as easy to overlook as it is hard to find. J. and I have been occasional diners here for some years and have never had a meal that was less than excellent. While the menu changes from season to season their delicately fried calamari is usually available as an appetizer and is simply the best we've ever eaten. It's not the expected breaded and sometimes greasy calamari one usually finds, actually it's hard to describe, more sauteed than fried, lightly crisped and served over a delicate parsley pesto. It's full of umami flavor and delicious. Every dish I can remember over the years has been remarkable for its freshness and flavor as well as its elegant execution. Even if you don't normally eat dessert, their brandy flavored creme brulee is, like the calamari, simply the best I've ever tasted. So why do we eat here so infrequently? Firstly, it's quite a trip from the west valley and secondly the whole area has become so popular with a younger clientele who prefer the neighboring inexpensive ramen restaurants that the sidewalks are crowded and parking is almost impossible. This is a shame, 2117 serves some of the most imaginative and well executed asian fusion food one can find in Los Angeles and at very reasonable prices, In fact, given the quality and execution of the food, Restaurant 2117 is a fantastic value. Give them a try, you won't be disappointed!
