Jianshui Ancient City Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Mar)
Yunnan Jianshui Two Days and One Night
Transportation: Self-driving
Accommodation: Inside Jianshui Ancient Town
Itinerary:
1️⃣ Narrow-gauge Train: The only privately-operated railway still in operation in our country, and also the only century-old narrow-gauge train, full of retro Republican style. The train is mainly wooden structured, making it very photogenic. There are four stops along the train's route, and it will stop for a while at each station for passengers to enjoy the sights. If you only want to take photos and do not wish to ride the train or deal with the crowds at each stop, you can follow the train's route by car. After the train stops and the passengers go to visit the attractions, you can get on the train to take photos with fewer people and without a ticket.
2️⃣ Shuanglong Bridge: Also known as the Seventeen-Arch Bridge, it is Jianshui's favorite structure, very quaint and historical. At sunset, the golden light on the bridge is stunning.
3️⃣ Tuanshan Residence: A group of ancient Ming and Qing buildings in Yunnan, a 600-year-old village, with an entrance fee of 35 yuan. Many villagers still live in the old houses, which are basically unrenovated, so they can be described as a bit rundown or authentically original.
4️⃣ Zhu Family Garden: The largest private garden in southern Yunnan, belonging to the Zhu family, the richest family in the area during the Qing Dynasty. Covering an area of more than 20,000 square meters, it is very large and you can spend a whole morning wandering around.
5️⃣ Zitao Street: Thought to be a place selling purple pottery, but it is actually a night market for food, quite lively at night.
6️⃣ Buy Purple Pottery: There are many shops selling purple pottery in Jianshui Ancient Town. Ask around and bargain to eventually pick out a teapot you like at a satisfactory price.
7️⃣ Jianshui Ancient Town: Like many ancient towns, it has Yiwu goods, a Confucian temple, an imperial examination hall, a government office, and many snacks. Stroll and eat to your heart's content.
Delicacies:
1️⃣ Jianshui Barbecue: Delicious, with a particularly good sauce.
2️⃣ Rice Noodles: All kinds of rice noodles are delicious, fried rice noodles, grass sprout rice noodles, must have a bowl every day.
3️⃣ Jianshui Tofu: Personally, I don't think it's as good as coated tofu.
Day 8 of the 2024 Spring Festival Tour: Lin'an Ancient City
At eight o'clock in the morning, it's just a few minutes' walk from Hanting Hotel (Jianshui Ancient City Branch) to Chaoyang Tower. The ancient city streets in the early morning are much quieter without the crowd of last night. Chaoyang Tower opens at eight o'clock to welcome guests, and you can go up to the tower for a view.
From Chaoyang Tower, head west along Lin'an Road, passing through Hanlin Street (Zhu Family Garden), Tianjun Temple (free visit), Xuezheng Examination Hall, Lin'an Prefecture, Jianshui Confucius Temple, etc., taking about 50 minutes with stops.
Then, starting from Jianshui Confucius Temple and heading east, we visited Xuezheng Examination Hall, Zhu Family Garden and other three paid attractions, with the last Zhu Family Garden on Hanlin Street.
These three attractions took about three hours, and we returned to Hanting Hotel at half past twelve.
Plan your trip well in these days, enter the attractions early, otherwise, like us entering Zhu Family Garden at around half past eleven, it was already crowded with people everywhere. Taking a photo also has other people in it. It's noisy everywhere, and when it gets hot, some irritability rises in the heart.
📍Introduction to Jianshui Ancient City
Jianshui Ancient City was built during the Yuanhe period of the Tang Dynasty, i.e., 806-820 AD. It was originally called Butou, also known as Badan, and in the Yi language, it is called 'Huil', which means 'sea' in Yi; 'Li' means 'big', which translates to 'big sea' in Chinese, hence the name Jianshui.
Jianshui Ancient City was originally a earth city built during the Nanzhao period, and was expanded into a brick city in the 20th year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1387). When Li Dingguo captured Lin'an City, the three city towers in the south, north and west were destroyed by war. They were repaired again in the fourth year of Kangxi, but were damaged again. Only the East Gate Chaoyang Tower, despite numerous wars and earthquakes, still stands nearly six hundred years later. Jianshui County began to build temple schools in the Yuan Dynasty, built Lin'an Prefecture School in the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty, and built Jianshui State Confucian School in the Wanli period. During the Qing Dynasty, four academies, 'Chongzheng, Huanwen, Chongwen, and Qujiang', were established one after another. At that time, it was known as 'half of the list', i.e., about half of the candidates in the Yunnan imperial examination came from Lin'an Prefecture, which was rare in the country. Therefore, Jianshui has always been known as a 'literary state' and 'Zoulu of Southern Yunnan'.
In 1994, Jianshui was approved by the State Council as the third batch of famous historical and cultural cities in China. The ancient city, after 12 centuries of construction, still preserves more than 50 ancient buildings, and is known as the 'Museum of Ancient Architecture' and 'Museum of Folk Houses'. The city has well-preserved and large-scale 'Yunnan's First' Confucius Temple, as well as Chaoyang Tower, Shuanglong Bridge, Zhilin Temple, Zhu Family Garden and a large number of distinctive ancient buildings. There are nearly a hundred ancient temples in the county, and more than 40 in the city alone. These treasures, which have gone through the vicissitudes of life, have considerable historical and artistic value.
✅East Gate Chaoyang Tower
Jianshui East Gate City Tower is the Chaoyang Tower that Jianshui people are proud of. It is recorded in 'Jianshui State Annals': 'The East City Tower, a hundred feet high, is magnificent. Below the city is a market, with thousands of households, endless scenery. The sun rises in the east, and the light is reflected far away. Looking at the city tower from afar, it is like a crane on a slope, like Yueyang, a great view of the south.' Chaoyang Tower has been exposed to wind and rain for more than 600 years, has experienced several wars, and is still intact and standing, becoming a landmark building of Jianshui.
✅Jianshui Confucius Temple
It was built in the 22nd year of Yuan Zhiyuan (1285 AD). 'Yuan History•Zhang Lidaobiography' records: In that year, Zhang Lidaobiography served as the Xuanfu envoy of Yunnan Lin'an Guangxi Road (Xuanfu Division was set up in Jianshui), 'and created a temple school in Jianshui Road'. This is the earliest Confucius Temple he created in the province after the first Confucius Temple in Zhongqing Road (now Kunming City), which was created at the same time as Dali Road. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was the location of Lin'an Prefecture School and Jianshui State School. It also once hosted Yuanjiang Prefecture School, becoming the cultural and educational center of Southern Yunnan. Over the past seven hundred years, it has been expanded and rebuilt more than fifty times. Especially in the Ming Dynasty, the head of the Hanlin Academy, Li Yueyuan, brought back the architectural drawings of the Royal Palace of the Confucius Temple in Qufu from the capital, and then rebuilt and expanded it according to the drawings, eventually becoming a large-scale Confucius Temple covering an area of 114 mu (about 76,000 square meters), the largest Confucius Temple in southern China.
✅Xuezheng Examination Hall
The Yunnan Tidu Xuezheng Examination Hall is the place where the highest education administrative official in Yunnan Province, the Tidu Xuezheng, regularly held the college entrance examination for students from Lin'an, Yuanjiang, Kaihua (now Wenshan), and Puer in the southern Yunnan region.
The Xuezheng Examination Hall faces south with a width of more than 40 meters and a depth of 150 meters, covering an area of 6,000 square meters. The buildings are neatly symmetrical, with more than a hundred rooms. The entire building is centered on the corridor, forming six courtyards. The existing buildings are well preserved, with red pillars and grandeur, and are an excellent physical relic for studying the ancient imperial examination system in southwestern China. In 1993, it was announced by the People's Government of Yunnan Province as the fourth batch of key cultural relics protection units. In 2019, it was listed as the eighth batch of national key cultural relics protection units by the State Council.
The college entrance examination in the Yunnan Tidu Xuezheng Examination Hall is a preparatory examination before the imperial examination. Those who are admitted to the college entrance examination can enjoy generous poetry encounters, enter the national imperial examination selection process, and realize the dream of 'being a country boy in the morning and entering the emperor's hall in the evening'.
In the Yunnan Tidu Xuezheng Examination Hall, there are four exhibition halls: the Mongolian Study Hall, the Jianshui Temple Study Academy Yixue Hall, the Comprehensive Hall, and the Local Hall, which fully display the ancient imperial examination system in China and the local imperial examination culture. At the same time, the Yunnan Tidu Xuezheng Examination Hall Wenfang Qinggong Exhibition Hall and 'Zangxitang' are set up, which display thousands of ancient inkstones from the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, as well as a large number of ancient quantities, rubbings, etc., and precious cultural relics such as oracle bone inscriptions, Qin and Han simple books, and ancient simple bamboo slips. Especially the authentic works of Lin'an Prefect Wang Wenzhi, Yunnan Xuezheng Tidu Fu Zhenbang, Qing Dynasty official Wang Wen, and imperial examination champion Yuan Jiagu, will make you linger.
✅Zhu Family Garden
Located in the middle section of Hanlin Street in the center of Jianshui Ancient City, it is a house and ancestral hall built by the local gentry Zhu Weiqing brothers in the late Qing Dynasty. It covers an area of more than 20,000 square meters. The main building is arranged in a 'vertical four horizontal three' layout, which is a typical Jianshui 'three rooms and six ears three rooms hall with rear mountain ears, a large patio with four small patios' parallel and combined residential building group. The courtyards are layered and the houses are lined up. There are 42 large and small patios and 214 rooms, known as the 'Daguan Garden of Southern Yunnan'. Zhu Family Garden is an important part of the national key scenic spot and the national historical and cultural city Jianshui, and is now a national key cultural relics protection unit.
The small inn in Jianshui is a bit warm
Start a new year with a trip
It's also the start of a new beginning for myself
It's hard to be yourself from pregnancy to three years before giving birth
Even if you try hard to focus on yourself
But it's almost unthinkable to go and play for a few days
Getting two special price rooms allowed me to take my first trip with a baby
The inn has no fancy decorations
The simple and unadorned warm tone
The landlady is warm
The fish in the pool are also warm
Like coming home
The inn is located on the side of the road near the center
To the left is the Chaoyang Tower of Jianshui Ancient City
To the right is Zitao Street
You can go to the ancient city during the off-peak tourist season
There are many beautiful inns
Compared to the full rooms and high-priced rooms during the peak tourist season
This place is still simple and clean
The hard days will eventually pass
You still have to take seriously each unique period of yourself
Life is very dull
It will only have wind when you run
The most comfortable small city in Yunnan - Jianshui Ancient City
Jianshui, more than 150 kilometers away from Kunming, although it does not have the romance of Dali and Lijiang, the romance in Jianshui's life is different.
Transportation: It takes about two hours to drive from Kunming. High-speed rail, departing from Kunming South, also takes about two hours.
Accommodation: Most of the homestays near Jianshui Ancient City are good, and the prices are reasonable. We stayed at the Qianyu Guanjing Homestay, which has a very good environment. It is also close to the ancient city, so you can go out for a stroll at any time.
Jianshui Ancient City is worth a good stroll. In the morning, many locals sit and chat, buy vegetables and walk their children. Chaoyang Gate, Zhu's Garden, Zhang's Garden, Confucius Temple, etc. are all in the ancient city. Walking slowly, every step may have a thousand years of history.
The small train from Lin'an to Tuanshan must also be taken once. It's a wonderful experience. Lin'an Station is very distinctive, and the small train is very retro. It passes through Shuanglong Bridge Station and Xianghui Bridge Station, with the terminal at Tuanshan. The scenery along the way is particularly beautiful, and the station is very retro and photogenic.
Tuanshan is a simple village. The yellow earth-based houses and the walls full of plants are worth taking the time to see.
Food, Beizibo, Nanjianshui, Jianshui barbecue must be tasted, any shop is delicious, Zhaotong small skewers, grilled chicken feet, grilled pig skin, grilled tilapia, etc., the taste is very good.
Shilin tofu must also be tasted, basically barbecue shops have it, Jianshui's pot is also delicious, the price is also reasonable.
It's a pity that I didn't go to Shilin. Jianshui is definitely a place worth visiting many times. Staying in the life, people will unconsciously stop the internal consumption, every day is beautiful. Jianshui Ancient City·Jianshui

Day 7 of the 2024 Spring Festival Tour: Follow the Jianshui Mini Train Self-Drive: Shuanglong Bridge Station
Originally planned to take a ride on the Jianshui mini train, but the tickets for the mini train are hard to come by, so I completely gave up. Driving along the route of the Jianshui mini train is also an option.
The train starts from Lin'an Station, which is in the city area. There are many people taking the train early in the morning, so I decided not to join the crowd. I chose to go to the second station, Shuanglong Bridge Station, to see the Jianshui Seventeen-Arch Bridge.
Last night, I stayed at the Vienna Hotel (Jianshui High-speed Railway Station Expressway Intersection) in the suburbs of the city. I had a bowl of rice noodles in the morning. I added some mint, and it was my first time eating mint rice noodles. It has a unique taste.
At 8:30 in the morning, it takes about 15 minutes from the hotel to Shuanglong Bridge Station. It does not pass through the city area, the road is smooth, and there is a free parking lot, which is very convenient.
Shuanglong Bridge South Rice Field Market, now planted with rapeseed, it is the season of rapeseed blooming, a golden yellow.
✅Shuanglong Bridge
Located at the confluence of the Hujiang and Tachong rivers west of Jianshui County, Yunnan Province, it is named after the two rivers winding like twin dragons. Known as the 'Daguan Tower of Southern Yunnan', it is one of the famous ancient sites in Yunnan Province.
Shuanglong Bridge is a typical gallery bridge architecture. It was initially built with three holes 5 meters wide, and later fourteen holes 3 meters wide, with a total length of 148 meters, a bridge height and width of 8.6 meters, and a bridge base height of 5.3 meters. Shuanglong Bridge is a single-hole bridge with a span of 13.5 meters. The bridge of the entire bridge is made up of 6 large wooden columns with a diameter of about 60 cm and a length of 25.7 meters. The body of the bridge is built with about 500 flat stones. Round wood is stacked on the base stone as a cantilever, extending crisscross to the middle. The three holes at the north end of the bridge were built during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty (1736-1795 AD), and 14 holes were added in the 19th year of the Daoguang period (1839 AD), so it is commonly known as the Seventeen-Arch Bridge. There are three pavilions on the Shuanglong Bridge, south, middle, and north. In the sixth year of Xianfeng in the Qing Dynasty (1856 AD), the three pavilions were destroyed by war. They were rebuilt in the 22nd year of Guangxu (1896 AD) and completed in the 24th year of Guangxu (1898 AD). In the fifth year of the Republic of China (1917 AD), the Yi nationality Nalou Tusi Pu Juntang led the army to attack Lin'an and failed. When he retreated, he burned the north pavilion of Shuanglong Bridge. The central pavilion is square, with a side length of 16 meters and a height of 20 meters. The upper two floors are covered with a hip roof; the bottom floor is a bridge passage, and there are stairs to climb the building to overlook.
Shuanglong Bridge is the largest and most artistically valuable multi-hole arch bridge in Yunnan Province; it is an important cultural relic for studying the history of ancient Chinese bridge architecture. Shuanglong Bridge inherits the traditional style of Chinese arch bridges, integrates bridge architecture science and modeling art, and is a masterpiece among ancient Chinese bridges. Chinese bridge expert Mao Yisheng listed it as one of the more than ten large stone arch bridges existing in China. In February 1965, it was announced as the first batch of provincial-level cultural relics protection units. In 2003, a special stamp of Shuanglong Bridge was issued, which increased the popularity of Shuanglong Bridge. In May 2006, it was announced as the sixth batch of national key cultural relics protection units.

Zhu Family Garden Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Mar)
Zhu’s Family Garden.⠀
⠀
An architectural complex that simply oozes elegance. With over 100 years of family history, the Zhu Family Garden is an incredible place to wander through, but can often feel like a bit of a maze. It took 30 years to complete, and the entire garden covers an incredible 20,000 square meters. With 42 different courtyards to explore, you could easily spend half a day here just exploring all the different nooks and crannies, and pretending (or wishing) that you owned a garden as elaborate as this one.⠀
⠀
📍Zhu Family Garden, Jianshui, Yunnan Province
#leaveyourmark
Michaela (@uncoveringcities) A city to slowly walk, slowly watch, slowly taste, and slowly reminisce
The ancient city is not very large, about 2 square kilometers. Living in the ancient city, the scenic spots are relatively close, all can be reached on foot. Zhu's garden is very beautiful, you need to ask a guide to explain slowly. After three generations of repairs, it's very exquisite.
Jianshui, a border city of scholars
Honghe Prefecture's Jianshui County, during the Hongwu years of the Ming Dynasty, the Ming court set up Lin'an Prefecture here. This border city of scholars, with the sound of reading like the spring breeze season after season, has brushed a thousand years, the green stone lanes, carrying water and chopping wood sketch out the ancient city's thousand-year charm. Tofu, Seventeen-hole Bridge, Daban Well, Jianshui Purple Pottery, the scholars reading at night in Hanlin Street, the soldiers guarding the border in Chaoyang Tower... These symbols of the ancient city, at the fold of time, are like a wisp of fragrant ink, lighting up the gateway to South Yunnan.
It's hard not to be moved by such a Zhu Family Garden!
🌟Highlights:
This courtyard, which resembles the Grand View Garden in Cao Xueqin's 'Dream of the Red Chamber', is known as the 'Grand View Garden of South Yunnan'. It covers more than 20,000 square meters, with 214 rooms and 42 courtyards. It's a real mansion and it's easy to get lost.

Tuanshan Village Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Mar)
Exploring a Historical Walled Village
Hidden within the depths of Yunnan Province, I was in and around the area of Yuanyang to see the rice terraces. Of course, with some extra time to spend exploring other areas, I just had to check out nearby villages.
Tuanshan Village is a traditional walled village in Yunnan province. Originally a mining center in days of old, it still features well-preserved residences you can dip into, temples and ancestral halls to admire and friendly locals to meet.
This village was also listed on the 2006 World’s Monuments Watch for being a rare surviving example of a traditional walled village in Yunnan province!

Michaela (@uncoveringcities) Royal Titled Zhang’s Mansion
Covering an area of 1,885 square meters, the Royal Titled Zhang’s Mansion is a two-row residential compound located in Tuanshan Village in Jiansui, Yunnan Province. While touring the village, we were invited inside to look at the incredible architecture of the place.
From golden plaques to intricate woodcarved windows, it was a nice place to wander through and explore, imagining the lives of those who lived here for generations. Unfortunately we were not able to learn much about the history of the place while there, even the signage was not very conducive to telling the full story of the mansion.

Michaela (@uncoveringcities) Stroll through time in the Tuanshan Village
You can take the excursion train in Jianshui and this village will be the last station. You will have 1,5/2 hours to stroll around and explore the small streets, traditional buildings and temples and gardens. There are a lot of beautiful woodcarvings to be seen and it’s an interesting cultural experience. It’s a tranquil place with lots of greenery. There are also interesting trees and plants in the village. If you are into photography and history it’s a good place to explore and take photos of the details you see all around. If you take the excursion train, it will take you back to Jianshui after your stroll through Tuanshan.
Walking through a village is one thing, but being invited to experience someone’s way of life is something we are always grateful for. We love how open a lot of people we meet can be, and this was no different during a visit to Tuanshan Village in Yunnan province. While exploring the small streets, clay-built houses and marvelling at the incredible view of the rice terraces nearby, we witnessed all of the locals coming together to eat outside. It was a special day for them, celebrating the life of one of their own who had recently passed. ⠀
⠀
A sorrowful day for many, but when gathered together with tables full of food, they still managed to find that silver lining on the grey clouds and find the space within their hearts to welcome us in to see their way of life that little bit closer.⠀

Jianshui Excursion Train Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Mar)
Jianshui Mini Train
Jianshui Mini Train Station, starting from Lin'an Station, ending at Tuanshan Station, passing through Shuanglong Bridge Station, Xianghui Bridge Station. The whole journey is 12.82 kilometers, which is the first and the only existing private railway in China. It was originally a French version of the inch track (600 mm gauge), and it was changed to a meter gauge in 1970. Traveling by mini train and watching the surrounding scenery is really comfortable. There are attractions to check in at all four stations, and there are Tuanshan folk houses to visit at Tuanshan Station. The mini train operates twice a day, with a round trip of 4 hours. The tickets are a bit expensive, but there are bottled water and snacks provided on the train, and there are train conductors explaining the history of the attractions, which is worth a look! Suitable for travelers who love to take pictures!
This is a train to the most beautiful scenery, the countryside, the wilderness, the rice fields along the way... let the beauty of Jianshui be presented here.
Sightseeing trains all the way from the city to the fields, the scenery of the road is really beautiful! Looking at the scenery on the train is really another unique way to travel to build water, and it is particularly beautiful against the blue sky and white clouds.
If you want to build water, you must take a sightseeing train.
Unlike the past green leather cars and high-speed rail, the Jianshui train is wearing yellow clothes and exudes a nostalgic atmosphere. It carries history and connects several scenic spots in Jianshui.
Railway features
The longest construction time (after 21 years of construction), the smallest in domestic history, the slowest running speed, and the highest revenue railway. At the same time, it is the only private railway in Chinese history.
Train style
As a train dedicated to sightseeing, both inside and outside are full of Republican style, such as old-fashioned wall lamps and wooden interiors.
There are 4 stations in Lin'an Station, Shuanglong Bridge Station, Xianghuiqiao Station and Tuanshan Station. Each station stops at 30 minutes, while the terminal Tuanshan Station stops at 1.5 hours. Visitors can Getting off the bus and sightseeing, it takes about 4 hours to go back and forth.
1 As the starting point of Lin'an Station, there will be a large wave of tourists every morning, and the train has not yet started, everyone has taken pictures.
2 Shuanglong Bridge is located at Shuanglongqiao Station. It is considered to be the largest and most valuable ancient bridge in Yunnan Province.
3, after taking the station, you will take pictures near the station track. The flowers here are gorgeous, and the antique waiting room is also a good punching point.
4Tongzhan Tuanshan Village, the biggest highlight of the itinerary, it is known as the most exquisite ancient dwelling group in Yunnan, and the crew of "Where is Dad?" was also filmed here.
fare
round-trip ticket 100 yuan, soft seat 120, the flight attendant will distribute a mineral water and a shaqima to each passenger.
0 time
only two cars per day, 9 am and 2:30 pm
The so-called waiting room is such a long yellow bench.
Not a site, no one.
I am alone in all the waiting chairs here.
There is no train anyway, but it is also open to outsiders, and you can take photos and chat with you. You are willing to be on the railroad track.
Get out of the waiting room, which is composed of yellowish green.
The top of the head is a double-sided clock, ticking in seconds, a bit of the taste of the sunset.
Today we are used to seeing the time by directly clicking on the mobile phone. Seeing this again, it feels good.
I only have one person on a long chair, no, it is only us on the entire platform.
Its a coincidence that I was sitting in the waiting room of Nanjing Railway Station and typing the text about Linan Station.
Well, there is a man in a yellow uniform who is staring at me.
With Samsonite's suitcase, headphones are stuffed in the ear.
Thick, the current monk is really fashionable.
Compared to today's modern railway station, Linan Station is more of my heart.
At least have memories.
