Tigray’s Majestic Cliff-Top Churches: Abuna Yemata Guh & Maryam Korkor ⛰️✨
Ready for a thrill? These two jaw-dropping rock-hewn churches perched high above the East Tigray canyons offer unbeatable scenery and pure adventure. Expect panoramic Danxia landscapes, autumn-tinted trees, and a spiritual atmosphere that’ll blow your mind.

For an epic day, start with Abuna Yemata Guh—open 09:00–17:00—where you’ll scramble up sheer sandstone cliffs (it’s more rock climbing than hiking!). Take it slow, listen to your guides, and keep an eye on the sunny canyon views stretching endlessly below. Don’t miss the iconic Insta-worthy shot: snap a wide-angle photo from the final ledge with morning sunlight catching the ancient church doorway and golden rocks. Shoes with a super grippy sole are absolutely necessary!

Up next is Maryam Korkor (W9C8+G92, Megab), a less technical but still challenging trek. The route winds past ruins, gnarly trees, dramatic autumn colors, and open canyon vistas. Pause for a close-up shot of the ornate church façade against vivid blue sky—the morning and late afternoon lighting make for stunners. Allow extra time for breaks and savor the spiritual vibe inside.

Pack snacks, lots of water, and thin gloves for the climbs—locals are super friendly and can help with tricky parts. Precaution: Both climbs require steady nerves and moderate fitness. If you’re afraid of heights, rethink Abuna Yemata Guh—exposed ledges can be intense!
