The armoury next to the Berlin Cathedral is part of the German History Museum. It is the first large Baroque building in Berlin and the oldest building on the street under the Bodhi tree. It has been an arsenal, a memorial for heroes, and a Nazi propaganda forum for centuries. Since 1952, it has been the original Museum of Democratic German History. In 1990, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the newly established National Museum of Germany has settled here and received the museum collection of the original Democratic Germany there. Thus, the two historical museums of Germany became the first cultural facilities in Germany to be combined.
