based on 472 reviewsUnfortunately, we missed the cherry blossom season in winter, which greatly diminished the scenery, a real shame. However, to make up for it, we saw Siberian red-billed gulls that winter here, circling the tour boat and chasing after food thrown by tourists – quite amusing! 😁
Tai Hu Yuantouzhu Scenic Spot is a peninsula in the northern part of Taihu Lake, named for its resemblance to a turtle raising its head. Here you can explore vast garden complexes, take a boat to experience the misty vastness of Taihu Lake, climb Taihu Fairy Island to discover hidden wonders, or visit in spring to admire cherry blossoms and appreciate the poetic essence of "the finest spot of Taihu—undoubtedly Yuantouzhu."
Every spring, the synchronized blooming of cherry blossoms creates a spectacular sight here, complemented by the lively Cherry Blossom Festival.

Tai Hu Yuantouzhu Scenic Spot is surrounded by water on three sides, featuring both the natural beauty of vast lakes with dotted sails and the idyllic scenery of mountain villages with small bridges and flowing streams. It represents the most picturesque landscape of Tai Lake. Taihu Fairy Island is a must-visit spot within Yuantouzhu, housing Taoist temples and grotto statues blending both Taoist and Buddhist elements. Climbing Luding Mountain on the peninsula offers panoramic views of the lakeside greenery, and on clear days, visitors can witness graceful boat shadows on the lake, experiencing the boundless beauty of Tai Lake. As a prime cherry blossom viewing destination, Tai Hu Yuantouzhu Scenic Spot offers two unique experiences: first, a comprehensive "land, water, and air" perspective for admiring blossoms; second, enchanting night viewing where cherry blossoms blend with artistic lighting. The early cherry blossoms here typically bloom in early March, mostly single or semi-double petal varieties. Cherry blossoms are categorized by blooming sequence into early and late varieties. Early blossoms have diverse types but shorter flowering periods (from initial bloom to petal fall) lasting about one week, while late blossoms can last 7-10 days. The interval between early and late blooms ranges 5-12 days depending on temperature changes, during which hybrid varieties flourish. The Somei Yoshino cherry usually reaches peak bloom in mid-to-late March, marking the optimal viewing period. The exact timing varies with weather conditions - cold fronts may delay this peak bloom period.

In summer, you can admire the beautiful lotus flowers in bloom.

Tai Hu Yuantouzhu Scenic Spot also features numerous historical sites and private gardens built by past elites, such as Hengyun Villa with its "Finest Spot of Taihu Lake" archway and Changchun Bridge, as well as Wuxi's ancient Guangfu Temple. Another highlight is appreciating the traces left by literati throughout history, including inscriptions, calligraphy, and paintings scattered throughout the area. If time permits, visit Wanlang Bridge—an excellent spot to enjoy sunsets over Taihu Lake.

The Chongshan Gate (main entrance, located in the southeast of the attraction) at Tai Hu Yuantouzhu Scenic Spot allows both entry and exit, while the Dushan Gate (northern part of the attraction) is exit-only. The entire attraction mainly consists of Yuantouzhu Peninsula, Taihu Fairy Island, and Zhongdushan. Exploring all the attractions typically takes a full day. For most visitors, we generally recommend the highlight tour route: Cruise Pier > Taihu Fairy Island > Best Scenic Spot of Taihu Lake > Hengyun Villa > Yuantouzhu Spring Waves > Guangfu Temple > Luding Hill.

We went after the Spring Festival, and there weren't too many people, so the overall experience was quite good. Although the cherry blossoms were gone, we took a boat to feed the red-billed gulls, and the whole family had a great time!
In January, Yuantouzhu is like a cluster of flickering flames hidden within a winter landscape painting. When morning mist blankets the lake, Taihu Lake resembles crumpled silver silk, suddenly a white shadow pierces the air—a red-billed gull plunges into the crest of a wave, snatches a silver fish, and soars high again, water droplets trembling from its wingtips splashing onto the boat's side, shattering into a clear, laughing spectacle. As the boat moves, hundreds of gulls chase the waves, some gliding close to the surface like silver arrows, others suddenly swooping down to snatch food, their sharp cries colliding with the crashing waves, creating a vibrant scene across the lake. Icicles hang from the eaves of the ancient temple, while winter plum blossoms stubbornly bloom, draped in a thin layer of frost. Their golden petals tremble in the cold wind, their subtle fragrance mingling with the bitter scent of pine needles, wafting straight to the nose. Deep in the bamboo grove, an orange cat curls up on a stone bench, basking in the sun, its tail swaying gently in the breeze. Even passing sparrows dare to perch at its feet, tilting their heads to peck at scraps. Climbing to a high vantage point, the distant mountains appear as if lightly brushed with ink, while the lake surface shimmers with tiny golden lights. As the wind brushes past your ears, carrying the coolness of moisture, the vibrant scene before you—the graceful seagulls chasing the waves, the penetrating fragrance of plum blossoms, the languid warmth of a cat—makes you forget the chill. You feel that Yuantouzhu in winter has simply broken down the coldness and brewed it into a jar of poetic wine that breathes.
From late November to mid-March of the following year, Wuxi Taihu Yuantouzhu Scenic Area will welcome a romantic date - Siberian red-billed gulls. These elves from afar add a touch of vitality to Taihu Lake in autumn and winter. As soon as you enter the scenic area, go straight to the lake. Wow😍, flocks of red-billed gulls are circling in the air, as if welcoming us. Their white feathers shine in the sun, and their red beaks are particularly playful. 💖Walking into Wuxi Yuantouzhu, we can not only watch the elegant posture of the red-billed gulls up close, but also feel the profound cultural heritage and natural beauty behind them. 🚢 Boat experience: Choose to walk for half an hour to the boat boarding point, or take a sightseeing bus (30 yuan). It is recommended to take the bus to the island at two or three in the afternoon and return around 4:30 to enjoy the beautiful pink sunset. 📸 Tips for taking photos: The stern is the best place to watch seagulls. They will chase the air waves and gather at the stern. Prepare small bread in advance, do not buy it in Yuantouzhu, the price is higher. Try to throw the bread in front of the boat to attract seagulls. 🚗 Transportation Guide: Drive to Yuantouzhu Scenic Area, the parking lot is convenient for tourists to park. 🌟 Warm Tips: During the tour, please pay attention to protecting the environment and do not throw away garbage at will. At the same time, in order not to affect the experience of other tourists, please keep quiet.

Especially the Yuantouzhu Lighthouse and Taihu Fairy Island have become popular places for taking photos and checking in.
