The overall design of the building is ingenious. It consists of four dormitories, which are connected by three Roman arches. The main body of the building is dominated by the gray color of granite, which is particularly simple, generous, heavy and steady. There are multi-layered stairs (hundred-step stairs) at the entrance, with a unified appearance and magnificent momentum. In order to highlight its guiding nature, a single-eaved hip-and-gable pavilion was built on the upper part of the arch on this basis. Each dormitory is divided into three rows of front, middle and back by two large patios, and each row is divided into 1 to 4 floors according to the height of the mountain; each floor of each building is named after the "Thousand Character Classic", forming 16 dormitories: Tian, Di, Xuan, Huang, Yu, Zhou, Hong, Huang, Ri, Yue, Ying, Ze, Chen, Su, Lie, and Zhang. The roof of the dormitory is made into a flat surface, which implies the ideal pursuit of "the earth is not flat, but the sky is balanced", that is, although all living beings have different starting points, they will achieve the same achievements through hard work and study. Similar cultural interpretations are endless in the old buildings of Wuhan University, which are intriguing.
