Tokyo Yushima Tenjin
Yushima Tenjin (Yushima Tenmangu), dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning, is a historic shrine located in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo. It is nationally known as a "power spot for academic success," especially bustling with visitors praying for exam success during the exam season 📝🙏.
The precincts are lined with ema plaques filled with wishes, making you feel the many hopes directed toward the future. Not only students but also adults visiting for qualification exams, job hunting, and life milestones can often be seen 🎓🌟.
Another charm of Yushima Tenjin is the early spring "Plum Blossom Festival" 🌸. From February to March, when about 300 plum trees in the precincts are in full bloom, white and red plums flourish, making it popular for experiencing the changing seasons right in the city center. Visiting while surrounded by the sweet scent of plum blossoms is truly special ✨.
Also, since it is located on a hill in Yushima, there is a sense of openness with views of the surrounding city from the approach and the main shrine 🍃. It is conveniently close to areas like Ueno and Ochanomizu, making it easy to stop by during sightseeing 🚶♀️.
Access is about a 2-minute walk from Yushima Station on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line. Whether for praying for success, viewing plum blossoms, or seeking a peaceful moment, be sure to visit.
Yushima Tenmangu Shrine is located on the uphill slope of Kasuga-dori. It is well-known for the fact that it enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, who was famous for his knowledge. When the Yushima White Plum blossoms bloom in the garden, many candidates who hope to pass the exam and flower-viewing people come here every spring. There is also a treasure hall in Tenmangu Shrine.
Yushima Tenmangu is located at 3-30-1 Yushima, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 113-0034. Mr. Izumi Kyoka once wrote a novel with this place as the background. The real site is as fresh and beautiful as the original text. There are steep stairs on one side and a long slope on the other. It is very close to the University of Tokyo and there are many students' wish cards.
The Bunkyo Plum Festival is held at Yushima Tenmangu Shrine from February 8 to March 8 every year. There are 300 white Kaga plum trees here, which have been a famous plum blossom viewing spot since the Edo period and are loved by everyone. Yushima Tenmangu Shrine is located on a small hill in the Hongo Terrace. To reach the shrine, you must go through the inclined stairs of Otokozaka, Onozaka or Memoizaka. Although the 38-step Otokozaka is steeper, it can directly reach Kasuga Garden. Onozaka is flatter but requires a detour. Arrange to go to Yushima Tenmangu Shrine to enjoy plum blossoms, and then you can walk to Ueno for shopping and food. After dinner, go to Ueno Park to enjoy cherry blossoms and take a walk.
Personally, I like this place because every autumn, God Society holds a grand chrysanthemum exhibition. Although not too many varieties are too rare, it is better than the intention of the site layout. At that time, there will be a variety of doll shapes, the staff will meticulously arrange chrysanthemums in various corners, not messy, or worth seeing. The key is that foreign tourists don't get involved here. It's very quiet.
I recently visited Yushima Tenmangu during the Chrysanthemum Exhibition and previously during the Plum Exhibition. I had a great time both times. The Chrysanthemum Exhibition was one of the best I have visited recently. There were all kinds of chrysanthemums and they were cultivated in different ways. The plums were also very beautiful and the best was the plum bonsai which was very beautiful. The shrine is very easy to get to and is very close to Ueno and you might be lucky enough to see a traditional wedding there. Highly recommended.
The Plum Blossom Festival in the Tianweigong of Tangdao began. Because the God of Tangdao is equivalent to the Chinese Wenqu star, many parents come with their children to worship the God and appreciate the flowers while the flowers are blooming.
