based on 148 reviewsDuring the free travel in Tokyo, Japan, we stayed at the Chinzanso Hotel and checked in at the Tokyo Cathedral of St. Mary across the street from the hotel. Tokyo Cathedral of St. Mary is located in Sekiguchi, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo. The church was built in 1899 and is a Gothic wooden structure. It was burned down during World War II. It was later rebuilt in 1955 with the assistance of Cologne, Germany, and its designer was Kenzo Tange. Even if you are not a Christian, you will feel inner peace in the quiet atmosphere of the church. Not to mention, the building itself is worth seeing. The church's structure consists of eight walls, which also serve as the roof, enclosing the church's interior space. The only opening is a large vertical crack. It combines Western concepts with Eastern culture and sentiments to create a very special building.

The location of St. Mary's Cathedral is a little off the beaten track and requires a closer look online, but its architecture and design are stunning. The Kuniyacho area itself is upper class but it's also a good introduction to the suburbs of Tokyo.
My family and I visited Tokyo Cathedral for Christmas mass this year. It was an extraordinary experience - the architecture, the interior (Japanese style) were amazing! And especially the music. It was definitely worth a visit, even though we couldn't read Japanese and didn't know what was going on! (There were also masses in English.)
I visited St. Mary's Cathedral in Tokyo and rebuilt it from the ruins of World War II. It's a bit remote and very few tourists, but it's really worth visiting. Don't neglect it when you come to Tokyo. Saint Mary drowned people with simplicity and grandeur, compared with the vast collection and complex structure of European churches. This is God's dwelling place on earth.
Very modern buildings, very spectacular, and very sacred without tickets are worth seeing.
