Varel Singapore, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, Grandly Opens in Selegie
Marriott Bonvoy's Tribute Portfolio®, a collection of more than 30 exceptional hotel brands worldwide, announced on April 1, 2026, the official opening of Varel Singapore, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel. The hotel is located in one of Singapore's most vibrant and uniquely charming neighborhoods, at the multicultural crossroads of Selegie Road and Mount Sophia, featuring 128 guest rooms. This opening further expands the Tribute Portfolio brand's presence in Singapore, showcasing its hospitality philosophy of celebrating individuality, embracing local character, and providing exclusive, attentive service.
The hotel's location was formerly Selegie Centre, and this newly built boutique hotel brings a revitalizing transformation to the area, creating an urban oasis in a quietly re-emerging neighborhood. This area is rich in history, with pre-war shophouses and Art Deco buildings telling the story of early immigrant communities; it also gathers late-night eateries, cafes, and independent cultural spaces. Varel Singapore, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, echoes the evolving unique character of this vibrant arts and culture district, allowing historical heritage, creative vitality, and local life to blend and coexist here.
The hotel's concept aims to pay homage to Singapore's past and present, drawing inspiration from the hotel owner's childhood memories of growing up in the Selegie neighborhood. From traditional games and familiar streetscapes to distinctive historic shophouse architecture, these everyday fragments collectively shaped the hotel's design philosophy, reinterpreted through a contemporary design language.
The building was designed by the award-winning architectural firm FDAT, drawing inspiration from the rhythm and scale of the surrounding shophouses, allowing the streetscape to continue and form a coherent urban fabric. Sky terraces and guest room balconies have been transformed into lush, suspended gardens, softening the urban density while creating moments of tranquility – injecting a gentle resort-like ambiance into the urban environment.
Inside the hotel, traditional elements such as louvers, metal doors, and handcrafted details are cleverly reinterpreted with contemporary design techniques, while nostalgic objects and patterns are incorporated to add warmth and familiarity. These layered designs create a rich narrative connecting the past and the present.
Cristiano Rinaldi, Chief Accommodation Product & Service Officer, Asia Pacific (excluding China), Marriott International, stated: "Varel Singapore, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, fully embodies the essence of the Tribute Portfolio brand – telling stories through captivating design, bringing people together through vibrant social spaces, and building genuine connections with the local community. Located in one of Singapore's most creatively vibrant neighborhoods, the hotel is poised to become a local social hub, allowing free-spirited and exploratory travelers and local residents to forge meaningful connections within its dynamic atmosphere and authentic service."
The hotel's guest rooms are presented in two distinct color palettes – bright and dark – offering subtle variations and a refreshing sense of discovery for different stay experiences. The interior design blends traditional elements with contemporary expressions, subtly weaving cultural symbols into the overall design narrative.
Playful design details, such as the chendol-inspired carpet pattern, cleverly pay homage to local desserts; vintage elevator-style metal grilles and dim sum-shaped light fixtures add unique character to the space. Bathtub designs with softly recessed walls, combined with custom amenities, complete the overall stay experience. Richly layered handcrafted details and soft lighting intertwine, balancing nostalgia and modern sophistication in each room.
The public spaces transform into a "living gallery" of community culture, with nostalgic elements from traditional games and local snacks to handicrafts guiding guests throughout the hotel.
The rooftop infinity pool offers a serene urban escape with expansive city skyline views. Surrounded by lush greenery and lounging areas, it becomes a natural social hub – whether for a refreshing swim under the sun or admiring the city lights at night, it offers distinct charm.
Vibrant Social Spaces
The vibrant atmosphere of Varel Singapore, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, is reflected in its four distinctive dining and bar concepts, each creating a pure and relaxed ambiance for gathering and interaction. The central area is Hathaway Autograph, an all-day dining restaurant that reinterprets classic recipes with a modern touch, offering approachable and delicious Southeast Asian flavors with both indoor and outdoor seating. Additionally, there's Vernacular Coffee – the flagship store of this boutique coffee shop, roasting beans on-site; and Saga Bar, a cocktail bar inspired by regional spices and flavors, crafting refreshing and creative drinks. The rooftop pool bar completes the overall experience, from morning coffee to late-night conversations, further enhancing Varel Singapore's unique appeal as a place to stay, connect, and build relationships.

In the private guest rooms, guests can also experience Chai Noir custom amenities – a collection co-created with French fragrance house Maison21G, adding a unique sensory imprint to the stay experience.
Beyond the hotel's own services, the hotel also collaborates closely with local creatives, artisans, and surrounding businesses, integrating itself into the cultural fabric of the community and injecting new vitality into this historically rich corner of the city.
Andy Tan, General Manager of Varel Singapore, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, stated: "For us, 'authentic service' is reflected in the moments guests remember long after they leave. We meticulously craft the stay experience from every detail, collaborating with local independent creators and incorporating handcrafted elements, so that every aspect conveys genuine and heartfelt care. Even the way we introduce guests to the community – such as relaxed 'makan' food walks and cultural exploration experiences – is designed to make the area feel approachable and worth exploring in depth, while also being conveniently accessible."

Show More ReviewsOnline purchase is very easy! The venue isn't large, but the exhibits and services are quite good. I prefer self-service, so I didn't need to interact with many staff members, and they were all very welcoming!
