The overall experience was nice, the food, the event, the show, we had an amazing time there. It’s just the time of lanterns releasing was so short, it was hard to get all the footage we want and some people they just let their lanterns to land on people’s head. The transportation was really bad by the way. The event finished around 9pm and we couldn’t find a bus to get back. We barely found any staff to help. Everyone was confused and frustrated because of getting stuck and not knowing what to do. We waited 2 hours for a standing bus to leave. I hope they can work on the transportation!
The Yi Peng Festival, also known as Yee Peng, is a traditional festival in Northern Thailand that originated over 700 years ago in the Lanna Kingdom. It is celebrated at the end of the rainy season to give thanks for the harvest. The Yi Peng Festival in Chiang Mai is particularly grand and spectacular, as Chiang Mai is the historical center of Lanna culture. Every year, during the full moon of the twelfth month in the Thai lunar calendar, people create colorful sky lanterns and gather to light them. Thousands of lanterns, carrying wishes for merit-making and the removal of bad luck, ascend into the night sky, creating a breathtaking sea of lights.
During the Chiang Mai Yi Peng Festival, in addition to participating in the lantern release activities at various venues, you can fully immerse yourself in the festive atmosphere. You can stay in the area to explore traditional music and dance performances, local art and cultural exhibitions, or witness sacred ceremonies conducted by monks at temples. You can also participate in the free Loy Krathong activities, which usually coincide with the Yi Peng Festival. During Loy Krathong, locals decorate floating lanterns and release them into rivers and lakes to pray for good fortune.
In 2025, the Chiang Mai Yi Peng Festival will be held on November 5th and 6th at multiple venues (specific times can be found on ticket information). For example, the CAD Cultural Center venue is a very popular traditional celebration site, known for its large scale and lively atmosphere. The Horizon Village venue offers a pastoral setting to enjoy the festivities, famous for its beautiful gardens and tranquil environment. The Maejo University venue is a traditional Yi Peng site, quiet and sacred, with a strong Buddhist atmosphere. The Gassan Panorama Golf Club venue features traditional Northern Thai performances and monk chanting, providing a cozy and intimate atmosphere.

I would think the lantern releasing activities is definitely amazing. However the long wait and other festival really depends on individual as the air can get quite hot and humid, due to free sitting process on the earlier festival, it is hard to get a place as alot of empty table is full of individual who says they have a big group yet nowhere to be seen. If you coming just for the lantern, consider skipping the festival entirely and wait for Krathong and Latern
I have always wanted to go since I saw the promotional photos, but I was always busy in October and November. This year I finally made the trip. It was worth the trip, the scene was very shocking, and everyone had a lot of fun.
It's so shocking, 🤩🤩It can be listed as one of the experiences you can't miss in your lifetime
It's really beautiful
From the overall service of Meizhou University to the on-site effect, it has met expectations or even exceeded them. I have to say that this festival is highly valued in the local area and has so many years of experience. The local travel agency (charter service) in Thailand that Ctrip connected with was really bad. Before the trip, the contact person gave warm reminders, including the pick-up address, etc. There are a few points that I have to complain about. 1. The pick-up car, the local sky lantern festival, there are at least more than 5,000 people on the scene, and the road conditions on that day should be more complicated. The arranged pick-up and drop-off are all tuk-tuks. The weather is hot, congested, and the distance is long. It takes about 45 minutes. There is a tuk-tuk for 10 people. Many travel agencies use small vans, etc. The car model was not specified in advance. Many people complained at the scene. 2. Of course, there is no way to ask what kind of car the local pick-up will use. We can only talk about the service performance. In the end, we chose to call a car by ourselves. It was very difficult to call a car on the spot. Many drivers directly raised the price by 1000, 1500 or 2500 baht. Later, we asked a friend to take us there. The person who contacted us did not explain that it was difficult to get a taxi on that day. He only said that those who were late should go by themselves. 3. The most serious thing is that many people missed it, or chose to go by themselves because they thought the tuk-tuk was too bad, but it was even more difficult to call a car when they came back, so they asked how to send them back when they went back. The person who contacted them said that there would be a car in the parking lot to send them back. In fact, it was an irresponsible answer. Later, we learned that the people who went there formed a group of 10 people, and the people who came back were also 10 people. The car was where we came from, so we chose to go there by ourselves and only chose to go home by ourselves. (I can’t write it down later)
