🕌 Gateway of Faith – Hazrat Khizr Mosque, Samarkand, Uzbekistan
#postandearn
📍 Hazrat Khizr Mosque, Tashkent Road, near Shah-i-Zinda, Samarkand, Uzbekistan
The Hazrat Khizr Mosque is one of Samarkand’s oldest and most spiritually revered places — originally built in the 8th century and lovingly restored in the 19th. Dedicated to Khizr, the eternal traveler and guide in Islamic tradition, the mosque stands on a gentle hill overlooking the city, its red-tiled roof and delicate wooden carvings setting it apart from Samarkand’s grand turquoise domes.
Though smaller than the city’s monumental mosques, Hazrat Khizr holds deep spiritual energy. It is also the resting place of Islam Karimov, Uzbekistan’s first president, adding national significance to its sacred charm.
🧭 Tips for Visitors:
• Climb the short path to enjoy panoramic views over Samarkand
• Visit early morning or just before sunset for soft lighting and fewer crowds
• Dress modestly and speak quietly — it’s a functioning mosque and revered shrine
• Combine with nearby Shah-i-Zinda Necropolis just a few steps away
• The mosque’s woodwork and painted ceiling are uniquely intricate — don’t miss the details

Hazrat Khizr Mosque is the best place to take photos of Bibi Khanym Mosque from a distance. It is the southernmost part of the ancient city of Afrasiab. The mosque, which was originally built in the 8th century, was razed to the ground by Genghis Khan and was not rebuilt until 1854. The ceiling of the sunk panel on the side porch of the mosque is decorated with bright and colorful murals. From this exquisite side porch, you can see Bibi Khanym Mosque and Bibi Khanym Mausoleum from a distance. From the hill where Hazrat Khizr Mosque is located, you can also overlook the scenery of the surrounding old city of Samarkand, but only a few scattered high-rise buildings can be seen.
