If you are accessing by bus, it is recommended to enter the park and go down to the north side (right hand) counterclockwise. You can see the plum garden, and if you go straight to the west of the park, there is an approach that continues from the torii gate, so take the stairs to the precincts of the shrine at once. If you don't use this staircase, you can't return to the bus stop unless you turn to the side of the tennis court, so if you don't have time or have bad legs, it seems better to return to the way you came.
