based on 6 reviewsI'd been longing to visit Tianzhu Mountain for years, and this year my wish finally came true. Tianzhu Mountain, formerly known as Wan Mountain and Nanyue, is the origin of Anhui Province's abbreviation "Wan." With its granite landforms, it's considered a sister mountain to Huangshan, Jiuhua Mountain, and Sanqing Mountain. The mountain boasts numerous unique peaks, strange rocks, and secluded caves. The rocks, some lying down, some standing, some leaning, are remarkably lifelike, resembling people and objects. The Huangshan pines, tenaciously rooted in the crevices of the rocks, possess an elegant posture that is truly breathtaking. The essence of the scenic spots is concentrated in the Xiguan Scenic Area. Although climbing Tianzhu Mountain is tiring, the abundance of beautiful scenery makes it well worth the effort, and I highly recommend it.
Tianzhu Mountain is located in Qianshan County in southwest Anhui. This picturesque area is known for its majestic peaks, secluded caves, unique pines, and strange rocks, and it is a Global Geopark. Tianzhu Mountain is beautiful, adventurous, and full of fun. You can climb to the summit to admire Tianzhu Peak from afar, walk along the thrilling Qinglong Ridge, or explore ancient passes and fortresses, delve into Mystery Valley, and overlook the beautiful Liandan Lake. The sea of clouds at Tianzhu Mountain is also a magnificent sight.
Travel tips
Spring, summer, and fall are the best seasons to visit Tianzhu Mountain. The attraction mainly consists of the West Route and East Route, with three common hiking options: the West Route Short Loop, West Route Classic Trail, and Full Loop. The West Route Short Loop is relatively easy, ideal for visitors with less than a full day. The West Route Classic Trail covers panoramic views of the West Route and requires a full day. The Full Loop showcases the best of both East and West Routes but is physically demanding—a two-day hike is recommended.
The South Gate is the main entrance to the attraction. However, after purchasing admission tickets at the visitor center, there's still a mountain road section to reach the South Gate. Visitors can take the attraction bus (round-trip for $30) to the lower cableway station. Currently, Tianzhu Mountain has three operating cableways: Muyanghe Cableway (Cableway 1), Dalongwo Cableway (Cableway 3), and Longtanhe Cableway (Cableway 4). The cableway fees are: $80 for uphill ride and $60 for downhill ride.
Travel Guide
From the South Gate, you can hike or take the Dalongwo Cableway up the mountain. We recommend taking the cableway to skip a less scenic section. After the cableway ride, there are two paths—one leading to Zongguanzhai and the other to Shenmi Valley. Opt for Shenmi Valley, where massive boulders form fascinating caves, then visit Feilai Peak and Tianzhu Peak before returning via Zongguanzhai for the West Loop trail.
Tianzhu Peak (approx. 1,488m above sea level) cannot be climbed and can only be admired from a distance. However, it is shrouded in clouds about half the year, so spotting it depends on luck. Crossing the "Immortal Crossing Bridge" leads to Tianchi Peak's summit, which offers one of the best vantage points for viewing Tianzhu Peak. On clear days, this spot provides expansive views and serves as an excellent location for watching sunrises, sea of clouds, and sunsets.
After viewing Feilai Peak and Tianzhu Peak, if time permits, you can continue along the new route to admire Penglai Peak, descend to Baiyue Terrace, then pass by Gebi Terrace - Immortal Cave - Qinglong Ridge - Qinglong Pavilion - Lotus Peak, and reach Liandan Lake. If you have good stamina, you can continue downhill via Huamei Ridge - Yingzhen Peak - Dansha Pavilion - Tianzhu Mountain Villa. If you have two days and are physically fit, you may choose to stay overnight at Tianzhu Mountain Villa and explore the East Pass the next day.
Qinglong Ridge is a massive, narrow mountain ridge that offers an exhilarating walk. At its end lies the "Wanjing Platform," a viewing spot surrounded by cliffs on three sides. Standing here amidst the mist feels like floating on clouds. Nestled on the mountainside, Liandan Lake is another highlight of Tianzhu Mountain. The view from above is breathtaking, and you can also descend to stroll along its shores.
As the saying goes, "The East Pass is perilous, the West Pass is scenic." The East Pass route is more challenging to climb than the West Pass, featuring steps carved directly into bare boulders with sheer cliffs on one side, requiring extra caution. It also demands greater physical endurance (the East Pass route includes: Immortal Peach Rock - Thrush Ridge - Echo Platform - Thousand-Foot Cliff - Great Heaven Gate - Magpie Bridge - Mystic Valley Sky Ladder - East Gate).
The Grand Tianmen is a valley between two mountain peaks, featuring a steep and narrow stone staircase that ascends dramatically toward the sky, creating a breathtaking sight. This section of the East Pass is particularly demanding on hikers' stamina. Beyond the Grand Tianmen lies the even more treacherous Magpie Bridge, with sheer cliffs on one side and a bottomless abyss on the other. Although protected by iron railings, crossing requires extreme caution. The Ladder of the Mysterious Valley is especially famous for its steepness and narrowness, resembling a "thread of sky" in some sections where climbers must use both hands and feet to pass through.
Attraction meals and accommodation
There are several small shops and vendors at Tianzhu Mountain attraction where you can buy bottled water, snacks, tea eggs, and similar items. However, since all goods are carried up the mountain by porters, prices are relatively high. It's recommended to bring a hiking backpack with your own snacks and water.
There are many hotels inside and outside the Tianzhu Mountain attraction. Tianzhu Mountain Villa offers better conditions within the attraction, with room rates ranging from $300–$800 depending on the grade. There are also some farm stays halfway up the mountain that provide accommodation with basic facilities. Standard rooms cost around $100–$200, including three meals.
Nearby Guide
Around Tianzhu Mountain attraction, there are several smaller scenic spots worth visiting if you have time and interest. These include the Valley Spring Cliff Inscriptions Cultural Park featuring carvings by famous poets like Bai Juyi, Su Shi, Wang Anshi, and Huang Tingjian, the thousand-year-old Sanzu Temple, and the thrilling Baima Tan rafting experience.

Scenic spot tickets in Anhui are twice as expensive as those in Jiangxi. A walk around Tianzhu Mountain reveals few noteworthy attractions, far inferior to Lingshan Mountain in Shangrao. The cable car fee is also outrageously expensive.
The cable car cabins were quite new, and they didn't force passengers to fill up when it wasn't crowded, but the price was a bit high. We took the western loop route, and the scenery was beautiful. The first hour of climbing was quite tiring, but reaching Tianchi Peak made it all worthwhile.
Tianzhu Mountain is one of the three famous mountains in Anhui Province. It is a geological park made of granite. The whole Tianzhu Mountain is full of strange rocks, and the Tianzhu Peak is even more shocking. There is also a large lake on the mountain with clear water. You can take a boat ride on the lake. It is recommended to take the cable car to Tianzhu Mountain and go down from the back mountain. This can save energy and time and enjoy the beauty of the whole mountain more comprehensively. You can bring some water and snacks when you go up the mountain. Climbing is a little tiring, but it is still worth it.
Tianzhu Mountain is the seat of Zuoci Aliandan, and it is also one of the shooting places of Heiwukong. It is mainly famous for its strange peaks, strange stones, sea of clouds, and canyons. There are also hundreds of steps in Huangshan. The scenery is not lost to Huangshan, but it is not as crowded as Huangshan. Because the main peak stands tall, Such as "Optimus One Pillar" and named, by geologists as the world's beautiful granite landform.
Tianzhushan World Geopark is located in Qianshan City, Anhui Province. I drove from Tongcheng and it was raining all the way. It was raining heavily. It was already 4 pm when I arrived at Tianzhushan Scenic Area. I went directly to the tourist center of the scenic area. It was closed due to rain. I found a hotel to stay in. The accommodation was very close to the entrance of the scenic area and not expensive, usually around 100. I entered the scenic area at 7 am the next day. The scenery was so beautiful.
It is definitely worth visiting. I took a quick look at it 25 years ago and don't remember it clearly. There is no cable car and the east district is not well developed. This time I came with my children, so I only took the leisure route for more than 3 hours. It would be best to stay for 3 days to visit the Grand Canyon Waterfall, go up the mountain from the south gate to the main peak, the glass plank road, the Hundred-Step Cloud Ladder, etc.
The train arrived at Tianzhu County at 5:39 in the morning. I met the persistent Master Zhang when I got out of the station. He took me to the mountain in a private car for 70 yuan. I had bought a ticket for the Huilongwo cable car, but it didn't open until 8 o'clock, so I went to Nantianmen to hike up the mountain. Although it was a bit tiring, it was worth it...
