City of the Dead

This cemetery has many beautiful tombs, people call it "City of the Dead" (City of the Dead). People who lived in this valley in ancient times buried their relatives here, and buried them in the clothes and other things of the dead. The valley here stretches for 17 kilometers, and the cemetery contains a total of 99 ancient stone tombs and catacombs. The whole cemetery looks more like a small village. The earliest references to the "City of the Dead" are from the 14th century, but there are also historical records that the ancient tombs have existed since the 12th century. The ancient Ossetians lived on 5 ridges there, but this cemetery is remote. This was because land was expensive at the time, and people had to put the cemetery in a relatively useless place. The cemetery is located on the windward side of a hillside, with graves very close to each other and some scattered. Larger tombs can be 2-4 stories high, each tomb is like a hut, most of the roofs have ridges and are made of steps, and some small tombs are roofless. In addition, each tomb had square openings in the walls, which were used to put the dead in.
