Enjoying Autumn Leaves: A 2-Day, 1-Night Trip
Purpose
To fully enjoy the autumn leaves in a 2-day, 1-night trip, focusing on Hasedera Temple and Tsubosaka-dera Temple.
Schedule
Day 1
Travel from Haneda to Osaka (Itami Airport). From Osaka Airport, take the monorail to Hotarugaike, then transfer to the Hankyu Takarazuka Line to Osaka Umeda. Enjoy Osaka delicacies like Ikayaki at the snack park on the B1 floor of Hanshin Umeda Main Store. From Umeda Station (Midosuji Line), head to Tennoji, then from Abenobashi, travel via Kashihara Jingu-mae to Tsubosakayama Station. From there, take a bus to Tsubosaka-dera Temple, a 5-minute walk from the bus stop.
Tsubosaka-dera Temple is an ancient Shingon Buddhist temple, known as the 6th temple of the Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage. It is said to have been founded in 703 (Daihō 3). The main deity, the Eleven-Faced Thousand-Armed Kannon, is believed to have miraculous powers for curing eye diseases. In autumn, the temple grounds are beautifully adorned with colorful leaves surrounding the large stone Buddha statues. While accessible by public transport, it is quite far from the Osaka and Nara areas.
From Tsubosaka-dera, take a combination of bus and train to Miwa Myojin Ōmiwa Shrine. This is one of Japan's oldest shrines, unique for not having a main hall but instead worshiping Mount Miwa through a triple torii gate. Although time was limited, the serene atmosphere was refreshing. Then, take a bus and train to Hasedera Station. Stay overnight at Yamato-ya, an inn located near the gate of Hasedera Temple. After dinner at the inn, visit the temple's nighttime illumination. The lanterns and the atmosphere were enchanting, though the autumn leaves were less visible at night. The lanterns, however, created a magical ambiance.
Day 2
Attend the 7 AM morning service at Hasedera Temple. The inn's proximity to the temple made it very convenient. Experiencing the solemn chanting of dozens of monks in the tranquil morning, surrounded by the majestic temple grounds and mountains, was extraordinary. The autumn leaves added to the beauty. After returning to the inn for breakfast, revisit Hasedera Temple. A morning admission ticket allows re-entry on the same day (note: night admission does not allow re-entry the next morning). Enjoy the stunning autumn foliage.
Travel by train to Kintetsu Nara. Have lunch at Naramachi Tofu-an Kondou, a tofu restaurant run by Kondo Tofu Shop. The restaurant is located in a 180-year-old registered tangible cultural property, offering a charming atmosphere in Naramachi. After exploring Naramachi, visit Nara Park to see the deer and Kasuga Taisha Shrine. Purchase yomogi mochi and souvenirs near Kintetsu Nara before heading back to Osaka Airport for the return trip.
Accommodation: Yamato-ya
Located just a 1-minute walk from the gate of Hasedera Temple, Yamato-ya is very convenient for visiting the temple in the evening, morning, and late morning. Note that the rooms do not have private toilets or sinks; these are shared. The bath is also shared and available at designated times.
Transportation
Public transportation was used, but some areas have infrequent services. It is recommended to thoroughly research and check the latest information in advance.
Notes
The timing of the autumn leaves can be difficult to predict. Additionally, as most activities are outdoors, the experience is highly weather-dependent.

The park covers approximately 660 hectares, stretching 4 kilometers from east to west and 2 kilometers from north to south. It encompasses key attractions such as Mount Wakakusa, Todai-ji Temple, and Kasuga Taisha Shrine. Its history dates back to 710 AD, when Nara was the capital of Japan. Kasuga Taisha Shrine still worships deer as divine messengers. Features and Key Attractions Sika Deer Herd: The park is home to approximately 1,300-1,500 wild sika deer, designated a nationally protected species. Visitors can purchase deer senbei (200 yen per bag) and feed them to the deer, who nod their heads in gratitude. The deer in Nara are a must-see feature of a trip to Kansai, Japan ⛰️Introduction to attractions: Nara Park is actually an open area without a special fence. Compared to other attractions, the 🦌 here is the most concentrated, and there are more large deer 🫎. Children with children should pay attention to the fact that there must be an adult watching over the children when feeding the 🦌 to avoid being hit by some large 🫎 with antlers. Sit here for a while and experience the peaceful years with nature and deer. If you interact well, you can still capture a lot of beautiful photos with deer! [Color] Let the Nara 🦌 gently "bump" away our class flavor! 🚗Transportation information: It is not far from Kyoto or Osaka to take the JR. Get off from JR Nara Station and take a bus to Nara Park. When you see 🦌 everywhere on the roadside (don't doubt that they are sculptures, they may appear in any place you can't imagine and pose in a "static frame" state, waiting for you to get close to give you a surprise), get off immediately! 📝Check-in guide: Nara Park➡️Kasuga Taisha➡️Todaiji➡️Wakakusayama, there are deer everywhere, buy some deer biscuits and take photos with them. If you are afraid of being hit by deer, you can avoid some male deer with horns🦌. Generally, if you don’t tease them maliciously, they will bow to you and ask for biscuits🍪 📌Price and other TIPS: 1️⃣ About buying deer biscuits: There are 2-3 fixed stalls in Nara Park for sale. The salespersons here are more majestic. Deer biscuits are sold open on the table. The deer lying next to them dare not grab them, but they will not be polite to the ones in your hands; 2️⃣ There are deer all the way from Nara Park➡️Kasuga Taisha➡️Todaiji➡️Wakakusa Mountain, so don't expect one pack of 🦌biscuits to be enough. It is recommended to buy 2-3 packs, hide two packs in a plastic bag first, break the pack you feed into several small pieces before feeding, otherwise when the little guys besiege you, I'm afraid that the big piece of biscuits will be cleared all at once
Nara Park is located on the east side of Nara city, at the foot of Kasugayama. The park is picturesque all year round, with hundreds of wild sika deer living on the open meadows. The park is also surrounded by Todaiji Temple, Kasuga Taisha Shrine, Nara Museum and other places of interest.
The most popular attractions in Nara Park are the cute little deer. They stroll leisurely on the grass or lie lazily in the sun in groups of three or two, not afraid of humans at all. When you get close, they nod to you as if they are bowing to thank you for feeding them, which is very interesting. The Todaiji Temple and Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara Park are also places to visit.
🌈Attractions: Nara is worthy of being an ancient capital, full of ancient charm. Nara Park is large in scale and the royal garden is extraordinary. There are many shrines, temples, and various ancient sites. Ancient trees are towering, shaded by trees, and lush vegetation. Some carefully laid out small bridges and flowing water, lawn stone paths, green pines and cypresses, lakes and streams are like large landscape bonsai. Against the backdrop of blue sky and white clouds, it is very beautiful. Of course, no matter how beautiful the scenery is, it can't compare to the deer that can be seen everywhere. They are not only cute, but also polite and not afraid of strangers. If you bow to it, it will also nod back at you cutely. Every deer will do that. Whether there is food or not, you can get close to the deer and enjoy the wonderful feeling of petting the deer. 🕐️Scenic area opening hours: 24 hours 🏝️Route recommendation: The deer will be more lively and enthusiastic in the morning and evening, and will be a little sleepy in the afternoon, so you can arrange the time to visit the temple shrine around noon, and leave more time for the deer. 💗Other tips: There are many sales points for feeding deer biscuits🍪, some are manual and some are self-service. After buying them, you will be surrounded by a large group of deer as you walk along, and some will take the initiative to push you. If you don’t want to play, just clap your hands at them and spread your hands, and they will take the initiative to leave. The weather is getting hotter, and most of the deer have shed their winter fur, revealing beautiful plum blossom spots, no odor at all, and feel particularly delicate and soft.
Nara Park is actually quite large. It is a short walk from Nara Station. It includes natural landscapes such as Mount Wakakusa. Various terrains such as mountains, lakes and grasslands are considered parks. It is rich in vegetation, with trees such as pine, cherry, maple and plum. The scenery varies in each season. There are cherry blossoms in spring and red leaves in autumn. It is one of the top 100 cherry blossom viewing spots in Japan. In addition, there are more than 1,200 wild sika deer in the park. They are regarded as messengers of God. They are gentle and cute, and they interact closely with tourists, which is a major feature of the park. ◦ You can also visit Todaiji Temple, Kasuga Taisha, Nigatsudo, Sangatsudo, Shosoin, etc. ◦ Climbing Mount Wakakusa in the evening, the sunset is really beautiful.
