Museum of 26 Martyrs of Japan

During the reign of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, 6 Spanish Christian missionaries and 20 Japanese believers were executed here due to the oppression of paganism. Later generations erected a monument on the hillside where this religious persecution occurred. The originally inconspicuous hillside has become an internationally renowned pilgrimage destination, attracting a steady stream of visitors. Showa 37 (1962) is the centenary of the martyrdom of 26 saints in history on the Nishizaka hills. For this purpose, the commemorative reliefs of the 26 Japanese saints were built, adjacent to it, and the Saint Philip Nishizaka Church was also built at the same time. . Standing awe-inspiring behind life-size bronze statues of twenty-six saints, the memorial is divided into two themes: "Heirlooms from the Catholic Age" and "Modern Creations Reproducing Their History". The history of Christianity from Sabiere's eastward journey to Japan to the Meiji era. Also on display are the letters of Tensho's youth envoy, Father Julian Nakaura, the letter of Saint Francisco Sabiere to King John III of Portugal, historical records of the Shimabara Rebellion, Mary Kannon, 16th century Bronze Pieta and other materials, as well as frescoes, Japanese paintings, etc.
