Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina | The Blood-Red Rose on the Bridge.
📍 Mostar is a city named after a bridge—in fact, "Mostar" translates to "bridge keeper" in the local language. As the second-largest tourist destination in Bosnia and Herzegovina, it once served as the capital of the Herzegovina region during the Ottoman rule. It lies in the southern part of the country along the banks of the Neretva River, roughly 80 kilometers from Sarajevo.
▪️ A City of Bridges, Etched with Memories of War
It is undoubtedly one of the most stunning cities in the south, sprawling across both sides of the emerald Neretva River.
▪️ In 1566, Ottoman engineers used 1,200 hand-carved limestone blocks to construct a 29-meter-high, single-arch bridge at the river's narrowest point.
▪️ Once a "symbiotic bond" uniting the two riverbanks, it was violently fractured during the war. This is a city entirely born of the bridge, yet deeply scarred by it.
The crystal-clear, emerald-green Neretva River murmurs as it flows, acting as a natural ethnic divide. The western side of the Old Bridge is home to Catholic Croats, while the eastern side is inhabited by Muslims. Churches and mosques face each other across the water, a stark contrast to the Serb population, which has drastically dwindled since the civil war.
We tasted the local specialty, 🤤 Ćevapčići (a Bosnian-style meat sandwich 🥙). The Old Town beautifully preserves its Ottoman heritage, where traditional coppersmiths, cozy cafes, and diverse religious architecture blend seamlessly. It’s an off-the-beaten-path destination brimming with history and stories.

The blue-domed structure in the distance is the Koski Mehmed Paša Mosque, a major landmark in Mostar. Its slender minaret reaches high into the sky, and the open terrace at the top offers the absolute best vantage point to take in the Old Bridge and the historic town.
🗺️ The sights are fairly concentrated and can be easily explored in 1-2 hours:

Other visitors' reviews of Neretva River
Show More ReviewsThe Neretva River is a flowing emerald code in the Balkan Peninsula - it cuts through the chest of the karst landform, and uses the millennium turbulence to polish out the arc of the Mostar Old Bridge. On the riverbed, the stone foundation of the Ottoman Empire and the shells of the war years are sleeping. When divers jump into the cracks of time, the green water becomes a canvas, dyeing the 400-year-old bridge shadow, the mottled bullet-hole walls on both sides, and the silhouette of the monastery on the cliff into a dynamic historical scroll. The river water not only hides the ingenuity of geological movement, but also surges with the alternating pulse of war and peace. Every ripple tells us: nature and civilization have always coexisted in each other's reflection.
