Notre-Dame de la Garde Cathedral is the symbol of Marseille. It is built on a hill 150 meters high, from where you can overlook the entire city of Marseille, the port of Marseille, and the scenery of the Mediterranean Sea.
Looking at the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de la Garde from afar, the gray and white marble building and the gorgeous neo-Byzantine church will definitely attract you to go there. Inside the church, the red and white marble and the magnificent murals are extremely gorgeous.
From every angle in Marseille, you can clearly see the golden Madonna and Child on the top of the temple. This Madonna and Child statue, which can be seen from afar, is also the patron saint of sailors, fishermen and all Marseilles. Recommendation reason: There is a viewing platform below the Basilica of Our Lady of Protection. This is the best place to overlook the entire Marseille and Marseille Port. Looking into the sea, you can also see the prototype of the prison in "The Count of Monte Cristo": Chateau d'If. The viewing platform is especially suitable for watching the sunset. In summer, the sunset is relatively late, so you can come early to appreciate the interior of the temple first, otherwise it will be closed at six o'clock and you will not be able to enter.
We walked from our hotel to Notre-Dame de la Garde, the path was well signposted so anyone walking could see it clearly. It was a big climb, especially at the height! But well worth it! If you don't want to walk, there is a small tourist train that leaves from the Old Port. Once you get to the top you get a fantastic 360 degree view of the city! Bring your camera as it's a great place to take photos! The cathedral was also a beautiful visit. So much history in this place, definitely worth a visit.
The neatest thing about this place is the narrow lane southeast of the hotel with a few small houses so the view is amazing. This place is amazing, both inside and outside. If you have time, look inside the church. Every painting depicts death and disaster, testing and slavery. Some of the paintings are beautiful and thought provoking. Don't miss it. This is the best place in the south of France, don't miss it, it will make you feel like Marseille again.
Unfortunately it was a cloudy day and there was quite a bit of wind, but you can take a bus directly to the church, where you can see a panoramic view of the whole of Marseille, which is a must-see for a trip to Marseille! You can also visit the museum to learn about the history of Notre Dame and the architecture of the cathedral.
The cathedral is located on the top of a hill next to the port. The outer wall bears the mark of the August 1944 Marseille Liberation Campaign. From here you can see the port and the hillside from all sides. There is no entrance fee and you can enter the cathedral freely. You can take the elevator if you need to and the stairs are not difficult to walk down, only 60 steps, and you can definitely walk down the hill, which people of all ages can do. Parking is limited when there are many people.
