No road trip enthusiast can resist the charm of "Highway 1." Only by speeding along the Pacific coastline can you truly experience the freedom and sunshine of California. Most tourists only travel the stretch of Highway 1 between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Unfortunately, the iconic Big Sur section has been under repair for several years and remains intermittently closed. But if you head north from San Francisco, this stretch of coastline is less crowded, vast, and mysterious. The complete Highway 1 journey truly begins here. On my solo road trip along the West Coast, the northern California section of Highway 1 gave me endless surprises! 🗺️ D1 San Francisco ➠ Point Reyes ➠ Mendocino D2 Glass Beach ➠ Avenue of the Giants ➠ Eureka D3 Redwood National Park D4+ Head north into Oregon, or return via Lassen Volcanic National Park ① Point Reyes: Rolling meadows and pastures, a desolate coastal lighthouse—leaving behind the bustling Bay Area, the charm of a road trip is just beginning. The reserve offers abundant hiking trails, and the lighthouse and Cypress Tree Tunnel are perfect for photos. ② Mendocino: Heading north, the rugged sea-eroded coastline is jagged and wild, even more so than the 17-Mile Drive to the south. In spring, wildflowers bloom, and locals and squirrels picnic on the beach. ③ Fern Canyon: Feels like stepping back into the Jurassic? It makes sense because Jurassic Park was filmed here. The redwood canopy at the top of the canyon blocks sunlight, turning the cliff walls into a fern paradise. Walking along the canyon floor, the velvety green layers on the cliffs feel like a path to an elf’s hidden retreat. ④ Tall Trees Grove: Accompanied by redwoods, drive 40 minutes on a mountain road, then unlock the forest with a password to enter. The world’s tallest tree, Hyperion, standing 116 meters tall, is hidden in this forest, but the park has never disclosed its exact location. When you look up at the sky, you might be gazing at the pinnacle of life on earth. ⚠️ Only 50 vehicles are allowed on the trail per day, and you must reserve in advance to get the password. 🌏 At the northern end of California, Highway 1 merges into Highway 101, ending its winding and magnificent journey. Further north, the foggy Oregon 101 is another secret realm. 🚗 The northern section of Highway 1 has many sharp turns, testing both the car’s performance and driving skills, so drive carefully!

Sequoia National Park was established in 1890 and is located in central California, USA. It is famous for its massive sequoia trees. Travel information for Sequoia National Park: Tickets and opening hours · Tickets: USD 35 per vehicle, valid for 7 days. · Opening hours: Open all year round, but some areas may be temporarily closed due to weather and other reasons. Check the official website for notifications before traveling. Transportation · External transportation: If departing from Los Angeles, you can drive north along Interstate 5 and then turn east onto Highway 198 to reach the park. You can also choose to fly to Fresno Yosemite International Airport and then rent a car to the park. · Internal transportation: There is a shuttle bus service in the park, making it easy for visitors to travel between major attractions. Recommended attractions · General Sherman Tree: Considered the largest tree on Earth today, it is about 83.8 meters tall, 11.1 meters in diameter, and about 2,300-2,700 years old.  · General Grant Tree: The second largest tree in the world and one of the iconic attractions in the park. · Kings Canyon: With spectacular canyon views, steep walls, rushing rivers, and lush sequoia forests on both sides.  Travel routes · One-day tour: You can first visit the General Sherman Tree and feel the shock of the world's largest tree; then take the shuttle bus to the General Grant Tree; in the afternoon, go to Kings Canyon to enjoy the canyon scenery. · Multi-day tour: On the first day, visit the one-day tour route mentioned above. On the second day, you can choose to hike some classic trails in the park, such as the Moro Rock Trail, and climb to the top of Moro Rock to overlook the magnificent scenery of the entire sequoia forest and surrounding mountains. Travel tips · Season selection: The temperature in summer is more suitable for hiking and camping; in winter, the park is covered with snow, and you can enjoy the snow-covered sequoia forest, but be aware of snow and ice on the roads. · Clothing preparation: In summer, bring light and breathable clothing, and prepare a jacket; in winter, bring thick cotton clothes, hats, scarves, gloves, and other warm clothing. · Plan ahead: The park is large, so plan your route and itinerary in advance, and book accommodation and campsites. In addition, mobile phone signals are poor in some areas of the park, so download offline maps in advance.

We drove from the Bay Area to Redwood NP during the four-day Thanksgiving holiday and are sharing a super comprehensive guide! Fern Canyon trail (P2-P3) A small canyon with ferns growing densely on both sides of a creek. Walking the trail requires occasionally wading through the creek, but at the end of November, the deepest water is less than ankle-deep. Waterproof outdoor shoes make it very easy to walk. The experience is quite nice. Bald Hills Road A mountain road leading to La Bird Johnson Grove and Tall Trees Grove. Besides these two trails, you can probably drive all the way to the summit, but it was foggy when we went, so we didn’t. Tall Trees Grove (P4-P7) About a 6 km trail that requires booking in advance on the official website. After booking, you will receive an email with the gate’s combination lock code. La Bird Johnson Grove (P1) A very short and very easy trail. Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway (P8-P9) A huge surprise! Last year at Olympic NP, we were super excited to see an elk from afar, but here the elk were grazing right by the roadside! Along the way, we saw many Wild Elk signs, so you can try your luck too. Coastal Drive A coastal mountain road turning off from Klamath, with a loop on the northern section. Signs say you can see whales in the ocean from November to April. We stayed about an hour at sunset but didn’t see any. There is also a WWII radar station on the road, which didn’t seem very interesting. Howland Hill Road (P10-P12) Simply amazing. A narrow road through the forest. For some reason, the trees looked much taller from inside the car. The Groves of Titan and Stout Grove inside are very simple but very nice trails. The park has two visitor centers: the southern one displays a bear skin, and the northern one has an elk antler. Both are worth a visit. The itinerary is based on the Thanksgiving holiday: leave the Bay Area Wednesday night, stay overnight somewhere halfway, arrive at the NP around noon Thursday, and in the afternoon visit Fern Canyon Trail and Trillium Falls Trail (also a very popular trail). On Friday, go to Bald Hills Road for two trails. On Saturday, drive through Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway to Howland Hill Road, and you can also try Coastal Drive to look for whales. On Sunday, drive straight back to the Bay Area.

There are many places where you can see Sequoias in California. Due to the weather and the fact that we had a 3yo kid with us, we went to Redwood national Park cause of its location and amenities. And it was a perfect choice for a day trip to see those majestic trees. It is an easy drive. There is a convenient parking lot and most pathways are well maintained, so it was possible to cross and walk around even on a rainy day. There were quite a few parents with small kids - most broadwalks were wide enough for a stroller. There is a cafe and a gift shoo at the park.
