Hong Kong has a vast number of hiking trails, ranging from difficult to easy, some along mountain paths and others along the coastline, offering a wide variety to choose from. This time, we introduce a simple yet breathtakingly beautiful hiking trail—the Tai Tan to Hoi Ha trail.🌸 Tai Tan is where the Maau Tong Stream meets the brackish water of Tai Tan Sea, so it is full of mangroves. In March, many butterflies🦋 gather in this mangrove area. This visit was in May, with the hills covered in pink flowers🌸, accompanied by spider webs🕸️ along the way. (Probably because it’s not a popular hiking route, it’s quiet and clean, and insects and small animals like this environment too🙈) 🕷️🕸️🕸️ When you start hiking, look for some useful broken branches by the roadside, pick them up to clear spider webs along the way as you walk😂 (Just be sure not to damage the trees! There are plenty of branches on the ground to pick up.) Walking along the coast, you can enjoy the sea in front of you and the distant mountains⛰️, feeling very refreshed. (Just be prepared to overcome any fear of small insects during certain seasons, haha.) During the hike, you will come across two small beaches where you can stop to listen to the sea breeze, have some snacks, and recharge. Near the end at Hoi Ha, you will pass the Hoi Ha Marine Life Centre. (If you have time and interest, you can book a visit next time to explore marine life. There are transparent boats to view underwater creatures, and guides explain various conservation methods.) There is a convenience store at Hoi Ha Bay for supplies, and you can also stop at Hoi Ha Beach. The water at Hoi Ha Bay is clear and the sand fine; it is one of the few places in Hong Kong with living coral and is a government-designated coastal park protected area. Please protect all marine life during water activities and avoid causing damage so that humans can continue to enjoy the precious gifts nature offers us. Starting from the center of Sai Kung, take a shuttle bus into the Sai Kung Country Park controlled area. From there, walk along the coastal path for another 10 minutes to reach Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park, operated by WWF. The park covers an area of 260 hectares. This bay has the highest concentration of coral reefs in Hong Kong, home to over 60 species of coral and 120 species of fish, making it incredibly diverse in marine life. Near the shore, there is an exhibition center that introduces marine life, and you can also view underwater creatures from a glass-bottom boat. On holidays, many people come to this bay for snorkeling, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. It is a great place to bring children to learn about the ocean.

Hoi Ha is different from other beaches with strong winds and waves; it is as calm as a lake, nurturing countless marine creatures. Hoi Ha Bay is an area of high ecological value, featuring a natural barrier that blocks impurities from entering the seawater, keeping the water relatively clean. (However, it seems that the water quality has changed a bit compared to ten years ago.) Hoi Ha Bay is home to many marine organisms. It used to be a popular diving spot (now permits are required). To protect the corals🪸 and maintain the ecosystem of Hoi Ha Bay, the government has designated it as one of Hong Kong’s marine parks and legislated to prohibit any human activities that could affect the ecosystem. (This is truly admirable. Occasionally, government boats can be seen observing the surrounding activities from afar. Any creatures found in Hoi Ha Bay must not be taken away!) Hoi Ha Bay also offers some water activities. For example, you can rent a kayak in the village of Hoi Ha Bay to better experience its beauty. On this visit, I was lucky to encounter a blue jellyfish🪼 right by the shore—so beautiful! (If you see a jellyfish, just look but do not touch it. First, it might be poisonous, and second, you don’t want to harm it.) Besides staying on the beach, you can also enjoy a short hike. It takes about 30 minutes to walk to the fork at Wan Tsai campsite. On the left, there is a small path leading to a little rocky beach where I love to sit quietly and wait to watch the sunset🌅.
