2025 Japan Autumn Foliage Forecast!
Autumn in Japan is the gentlest season of the year. Starting in September, the 'koyo front' (autumn foliage front) gradually moves south from Hokkaido. Different regions are successively painted in shades of red and gold, as if time itself is flowing. Want to chase the autumn leaves? Save this timetable!
🇯🇵 Hokkaido (Late October - Early November)
The first place in Japan to welcome autumn.
📍 Recommended attractions: Daisetsuzan National Park, Sounkyo Gorge, Shiretoko Five Lakes, Jozankei Onsen
The mountain peaks begin to turn red by late September, with early October being the peak. Sounkyo Gorge is enveloped by autumn leaves, and with the mist and waterfalls, it resembles an oil painting. Jozankei is the perfect spot for enjoying hot springs while admiring the autumn foliage.
🍁 Tohoku Region (Late October)
Where autumn colors are most vibrant.
📍 Aomori: Oirase Stream, Akita: Dakigaeri Valley, Miyagi: Naruko Gorge
Here, the autumn leaves intertwine with streams and mist, creating a serene beauty. Kakunodate's Samurai District (Bukeyashiki Street) feels like a maple-leaf town from a bygone era.
🗼 Kanto Region (Late October - Mid-November)
An autumn foliage season where city and nature intertwine.
📍 Tokyo: Mount Takao, Nikko, Hakone, Kamakura
Tokyo's autumn leaves are most beautiful from early to mid-November. Take the cable car up Mount Takao, and you'll be surrounded by autumn leaves all the way. Nikko's Shinkyo Bridge and Toshogu Shrine, set against the autumn leaves, create a picturesque scene and are among Japan's top ten autumn foliage spots.
🏔️ Chubu Region (Early November - Late November)
Autumn leaves with snow-capped mountains – that's the romance of Chubu.
📍 Nagano: Karuizawa, Yamanashi: Fuji Five Lakes, Gifu: Shirakawa-go
The Autumn Leaves Festival at the foot of Mount Fuji (late October - mid-November) is incredibly dreamy, with blue skies, lake reflections, snow-capped peaks, and autumn leaves forming a perfect tableau. Shirakawa-go's gassho-zukuri houses, set against the maple leaves, exude a fairytale-like tranquility.
⛩️ Kansai Region (Mid-November - Early December)
Kyoto is the epitome of autumn in Japan.
📍 Kyoto: Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Eikan-do Temple, Kodai-ji Temple, Arashiyama; Nara: Todai-ji Temple Park
The peak season is from mid to late November. Enjoy the autumn leaves at temples during the day and illuminated events at night. The reflection of the night maples at Eikan-do Temple is especially recommended, truly a fairyland on earth.
🌸 Kyushu Region (Late November - Mid-December)
The last stop for autumn.
📍 Fukuoka: Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, Oita: Yufuin, Kumamoto: Mount Aso
With its warm climate, the autumn leaves arrive late. Soaking in the Yufuin Onsen while watching the autumn leaves fall outside the window is the most healing moment of early winter.
🍂 From north to south, Japan's autumn foliage season lasts for nearly three months. Some say that autumn in Japan is not a fleeting spectacle, but a slow-flowing poem. No matter where you go, you can encounter that place's "most beautiful moment of autumn leaves."
I was on a business trip to Tokyo and decided to go hiking. I chose Mount Takao because it is the closest to Tokyo. It takes 1.5 hours by subway from Shinagawa to Mount Takao. There are many hiking routes in Mount Takao. I only had half a day free, so I chose Route 6 to climb the forest exploration route, Route 1 to return on the natural history route, and finally took the cable car down the mountain. It took 2 hours to hike 6.5km. Route 6 is along the stream, mostly on a rocky road. There is a plank road near the top of the mountain. The trees are tall and the ecology is relatively primitive. There are few people. Route 1 is a repaired cement road with temples along the way. There are more people. On one side of the top of the mountain, you can see Mount Fuji, and on the other side, you can see Tokyo City. The scenery is open. It is said that this is the mountain with the most climbers. Maybe it was because it was a weekday, so I didn’t see many people. In general, friends who like hiking and mountaineering are worth a visit when they come to Tokyo.
Located just an hour from Tokyo, Mount Takao is a hidden gem that you can reach directly via train from Shinjuku. For our visit, we opted to take the cable car up to the summit, which is quite crowded, and then used the chairlift for the descent, allowing us to fully enjoy the picturesque scenery.Additionally, Mount Takao features a unique dining experience at the Beer Mount—a buffet restaurant that offers an all-you-can-drink beer service along with a variety of foods. We had lunch there, and the terrace is open to the public, providing a panoramic 360-degree view of the surrounding area.
I really like this place. It is a very interesting place. It is beautiful, the atmosphere is good, and it is easy to travel. If you have the chance, you should visit here at least once. It is a pity that when I came, all the leaves were withered.
From Shinjuku to Beijing-Wang Line, the pasmo card is only 381 yuan. The mountain is not high and the road is not long. There is no need to take a cable car or anything else. Otherwise, there will be no pleasure in climbing. The snacks on the road are indeed well-known. Tianguo cooks very well. I regret that I bought fewer snacks. Come earlier, maple leaves only a little red, mostly green.
When I got up at 6:30 a.m. in order to go to Gaowei Mountain, it seemed that I hadn't climbed for two years. There were six routes in total. When I came down, I chose a slippery route. It was really easy to slip and fall at a few bad times. Catching the tail of Red Leaf to see Red Leaf Man is really a lot of people queuing up for a long time to eat and burn. They also queued for a long time for small trains, but it's not a worthwhile trip.
Mount Takao is second only to Mount Fuji in terms of popularity. From the top of the mountain, the red and yellow colors are very beautiful. When visibility is good, you can see Mount Fuji from the top of the mountain. It is very convenient to go to Mount Takao from the center of Tokyo. If you don't like climbing mountains, you can also take the cable car.
Today, my son accompanied me to Gaowei Mountain in Tokyo. Gaowei Mountain is a year of maple sacrifice. The red leaves of "madness" are organically combined with Japanese monastery architecture, just as cherry blossoms are organically combined with Japanese monastery architecture. Perfect integration is no longer possible.
