Devin Castle

On one of the sunnier days of the early spring weather, we ventured out to Devins Castle and spent the whole morning exploring and walking around. It was super easy to find, looks super far with lots of walking but was surprisingly do-able. I would recommend taking some light snacks with you to enjoy while you’re there. Did I actually find a Games of Throne filming location in Slovakia? I wish,BUT ACTUALLY this castle is not one of the filming location eventho it looks like it could be part of Westeros so much with the medieval looking castle ruins, isn’t it? 📍Devin Castle, Bratislava This beautiful castle located at the border of Slovakia and Austria and you can see Danube river and Morava river intersection that separate the two countries. It is built on top of a crag and its remain a ruin till this days as it is one of the oldest castle in Slovakia. You have to visit the panoramic view from the Maiden Castle overlooking the beautiful rivers, truly breathtaking. I was able to see it far from distance during my visit and it was my highlight! The entry ticket to this castle is 6€ because we come during a public holiday in Europe but normal price ticket is 8€. I think it used to be priced lower back in the early days. We took a Bolt taxi from Bratislava Castle to here Hrad and we paid 7.80€ divided by the three of us. Bolt here is super affordable, I do suggest taking Bolt in Slovakia compared to taking bus if you prefer convenience! So do you think this is a hidden gem in Slovakia? I visited Devin Castle in Bratislava, Slovakia. It's about a 30-minute bus ride from the city center. Make sure to buy your ticket from the vending machine. If you are caught without a ticket, you will be fined 50 euros. Devin Castle is located on a hill and can be climbed in about 30 minutes. From the top, you can see the river that forms the border with Austria. The entrance fee is 8 euros during the high season in summer and 6 euros during the low season in winter. Its proximity to the city center makes it an easy day trip 🚌. 💡 Travel Tip: The castle grounds are expansive with many slopes, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. 🏰 What is Devín Castle? Just a 30-minute tram and bus ride from downtown Bratislava, you'll find Devín Castle perched atop a cliff where the Danube and Morava rivers meet. At first glance, it may seem like just an old ruin, but it has a rich history as a fortress used by various powers, from the Celts to the Romans, Hungarians, and the Habsburgs. In 1809, during the war with Austria, Napoleon's army bombarded the castle with cannons, leaving it in its current state. However, its unreconstructed ruins only add to its mysterious charm. 🚍 How to Get There ⚠️⚠️⚠️ Do not rely on Google Maps ⚠️⚠️⚠️ When I followed Google Maps, I found that the transportation routes had changed as of September 2025. Instead, I used the IDS BK app for accurate directions. Directions: Take tram 4 or 9 from Bratislava city center for about 10 minutes and get off at Riviéra. Walk for 1 minute to the Riviéra bus stop, then take bus 29 for about 20 minutes. 🌟 Frequency: Trams every 5 minutes, bus 29 every 15 minutes. 👏 Operating Hours and Admission Fees: Discounts available for students 👍 💸 Admission Fees (April–October): 8€ General 4€ Reduced (children aged 6–15, students, seniors) 18€ Family Ticket (2 adults + 3 kids) 10€ Family Ticket (1 adult + 2 kids) 3€ School Group (per person) * From November to March, tickets are discounted by 1–2€. ⌚️ Operating Hours: Opens at 10:00 AM March, October: Closes at 5:00 PM April, May, September: Closes at 6:00 PM June, July, August: Closes at 7:00 PM November–February: Closes at 4:00 PM Closed on Mondays. You'll immediately understand its strategic importance when you visit! If you're in Bratislava, this is a must-see destination worth dedicating half a day to. It took me about 5 hours to explore and return! There are plenty of benches, so bring some snacks and enjoy a picnic!
