There are far fewer tourists than at Badaling, making it less crowded for photos and more comfortable for climbing. It is also a favorite section of the Great Wall for many foreign visitors. So the first thing to know is that there are multiple ways and combinations to go up and down the mountain: They are: 🥾 Hiking 🚠 Cable car (closed cabin) 🚡 Cable way (opened cabin) 🛝 Slide way (only goes down) ❌ Don’t do what I did. I bought cable car up and down. That means I have to walk on the wall to my preferred path (right or left) then go back exactly the same way to get the cable car down. That’s a bad choice because it’s tiring and you don’t see anything new on the way back, only the same views. 💚 The best route is to take the cable car up, walk to the right side towards the cable way and slide way. This path takes about 1h30min. You can go a bit further if you want, until the end of the accessible path of the wall, then go back to the cable way or slide. To go down you can take the cable way or the slide. Both start at the same point at the wall. Our visit to Mutianyu was one of the best parts of our time in Beijing. We landed early at PEK airport and went straight to the Great Wall, since Mutianyu is on the same side of the city - which saved a lot of travel time. The climb up was long and steep, but the effort was worth every step. As soon as we reached the wall, we were greeted with sweeping views of mountains rolling away in every direction. The combination of ancient stone and endless natural beauty made the experience unforgettable. On a previous trip we had visited Badaling, which is the most famous section of the Great Wall. While Badaling is impressive in scale and accessibility, it doesn’t compare to the atmosphere at Mutianyu. Here, the mountains are more dramatic and the setting feels more peaceful. We all agreed that Mutianyu had become our favorite Great Wall experience.

We chose the Mutianyu section It’s one of the most beautiful, well-restored, and accessible sections of the Great Wall, located just outside Beijing ☝️ · Not as crowded as Badaling · Not as "wild" and dangerous as Jiankou Mutianyu is famous for its picturesque views, dense forests, a high concentration of watchtowers (22 along a 2,250-meter stretch), and excellent infrastructure: This section features an enclosed cable car 🚡, an open chairlift 🚠, and a toboggan ride down 🛝—a thrilling 1.5 km bobsled-style track where you ride a wheeled sled with a handbrake. It’s a totally unique way to get down the wall after your hike 🤗 Mutianyu perfectly blends historical sightseeing with pure fun! The Mutianyu section has 3 starting points: 🏰 Tower 6 - Open chairlift 🚠 up and down, plus the starting point for the toboggan 🛝 🏰 Tower 14 - Enclosed cable car 🚡 for round-trip rides 🏰 Tower 20 - The highest point on the wall, but it's only accessible on foot 🚶🏼➡️ We decided to take the cable car up to Tower 14, hike over to Tower 6, and ride the toboggan down 🛝 ...Which we completely missed 😂🥲🙈 So make sure to arrive early, since the toboggan closes at 5:00 PM 🕔, and ticket sales stop half an hour before that 🎫 What you’ll need: · Round-trip transfer from Beijing to the Wall (takes about 1.5-2 hours each way) · Shuttle bus to the Wall entrance · Great Wall entrance ticket · Cable car/chairlift and toboggan tickets (optional) 😉 You can buy tickets through Trip.com (Russian cards are accepted). They also offer packages that include transfers (buses departing from Dongzhimen)*—this is definitely the most convenient way! Alternatively, you can buy tickets on-site at the ticket office (paying with Alipay) and just take a taxi there on your own 🚕 I’d also highly recommend looking into the Simatai section: It's famous for its steep inclines and is the only section of the Great Wall open for beautifully illuminated night tours.
