Quiet Power of Yonghe Temple: A Late Afternoon Visit ☀️
We visited the Lama Temple (Yonghegong) — one of the most spiritually charged and architecturally impressive sites in Beijing. It’s an active Tibetan Buddhist temple, and what sets it apart is not just the beauty of the buildings, but the living, breathing atmosphere of devotion.
🕓 We arrived around 4 PM, just an hour before closing — and honestly, it was a great time to visit. There were no lines at the entrance, and while the inner courtyards were still quite busy, the flow of people was manageable and peaceful.
Inside, the temple grounds were filled with locals and pilgrims burning incense, bowing in prayer, and moving through the halls in quiet reflection. The scent of incense, the soft murmurs, and the golden afternoon light made the entire place feel calm, powerful, and uplifting 🌸🕯️
Each hall holds massive statues of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, with the final hall featuring the 26-meter-tall statue of Maitreya, carved from a single piece of sandalwood — truly awe-inspiring.
Despite the crowds, it didn’t feel overwhelming. People were respectful and moved slowly, giving space to one another. You don’t need to be religious to feel the spiritual energy of this place — it’s just deeply human and grounding.

Yonghe Temple in Beijing is conveniently located in the city center, easily accessible by bus and subway. Historically, it was the residence of Emperor Yongzheng when he was a prince, and also the birthplace and childhood home of Emperor Qianlong. The architecture is magnificent and ornate. The exhibits inside are also excellent, offering insights into Tibetan Buddhism.
Director Li is incredibly knowledgeable. He shared a lot of things I never knew before, connecting them to modern culture. He taught us how to worship, what to worship, and the meaning behind it. It was very informative and engaging, truly enhancing our understanding of Buddhism. He also pointed out many unique and meaningful perspectives and Buddhist objects that others might overlook or miss. In fact, his knowledge was profound and highly entertaining.

Beijing|Guide to praying at Lama Temple |You should come to Lama Temple several times a year. Here you can purify your soul and sublimate your life. Today is the first day of the new year. I came to pray early. There are so many people in the temple. It feels like everyone in Beijing has come to Lama Temple... The incense is really popular~🎫Tickets It is recommended to make an appointment in advance on the official account. Bring your ID card or scan the code to enter the park. Adult tickets are 25r, and half-price tickets for the elderly and students are 12r. 🌟No more than three wishes can be made each time you pray! Sincerity is the key~Wishmaking skills Introduce yourself + where you are from + wishes. Remember not to accept adjustments when making wishes! (I have heard too many adjusted wishes🥹), ⚠️You must come to fulfill your wishes when your wishes come true~🌟You can get incense for free on both sides of the temple, one for each person, and burn three incense sticks in front of each hall. Incense etiquette: Hold the incense with your left hand, hold it with your right hand, raise it above your head, and make a sincere wish. Then it is recommended to worship all directions. This is also based on personal preference. Anyway, I always worship all directions. After all, wealth comes from all directions~⚠️Precautions⭕️Don’t step on the threshold when entering the main hall. Stepping on the threshold is disrespectful to the Buddha. Don’t go through the middle door and don’t go back! ⭕️Cannot blow the incense with your mouth, but fan it gently with your hands. ⭕️You can’t take pictures inside the hall📷❌, but you can take pictures of the buildings outside the hall, and they are very photogenic~ A casual shot is a blockbuster! ⭕️Don’t wear a hat, don’t wear slippers, and don’t wear revealing clothes! ⭕️You can bring your own consecration tokens, or you can pick them up at the Dharma Distribution Center. ⭕️Girls can also worship when they have their period🌟About bracelets~There are 3 Dharma Distribution Centers in Yonghe Palace✅The west side of the ticket gate outside the palace✅The east side of Zhaotai Gate inside the palace✅The west side of the Main Hall inside the palaceOpening hours 9:00-16:30, every time I go there, there are a lot of people! There was a long queue. It's really popular. There are many styles of bracelets. They are all very beautiful. You can always find one that suits you and you can try them on. Tips: In order to save time, it is recommended to check the styles online first and buy them directly when they arrive. I really like this zodiac three-in-one bracelet I bought. I hope it can bring me good luck. Lama Temple 📍No. 28, Lama Temple Street, Dongcheng District
Lama Temple: A Labyrinth of Faith The Lama Temple is filled with incense, and believers line up to put money into the "merit box". The jingling of copper coins is like the sound of the gods and Buddhas' joy. The people kneeling in front of the temple all have their own concerns. Some are seeking wealth, some are asking about illness, and some are praying for marriage. The golden-clad Bodhisattva lowers his eyebrows and eyes. Is he showing compassion or sneering? Faith has become a transaction, and piety has become a bargaining chip. People use incense to bribe the gods in exchange for peace in this world. Little do they know that true faith is not in the heyday of incense, but in the heart of people.
[Value for money] Tickets cost only a few dozen yuan. Not expensive! [Fun] The architectural style of the Lama Temple is unique, integrating the architectural styles of Han, Manchu, Mongolian, Tibetan and other ethnic groups. Yellow tiles and red walls, flying eaves and brackets, every detail shows the craftsman's exquisite skills and ultimate pursuit of beauty. From the east and west archways with flying eaves and brackets to the quaint East and West Shunshan Buildings, it covers a total area of 66,400 square meters and has more than a thousand halls. Among them, the Yongyou Hall, Falun Hall, Wanfu Pavilion and other halls are magnificent and breathtaking.
The Lama Temple was the birthplace of Emperor Yongzheng and Emperor Qianlong. So after it was converted into a Lama Temple, it had the highest standards, with red walls and yellow tiles. The Wanfu Pavilion in the Lama Temple is the most spectacular, with the 26-meter-long Buddha carved from sandalwood alone, which has been included in the Guinness World Records.
