What is a 16-17 Saver Railcard?
The 16-17 Saver Railcard provides 50% off most UK rail fares for young people aged 16 and 17. It's an excellent way for students to reduce the cost of travelling to school or college by train. The Railcard applies to a wide range of ticket types - including Standard Anytime, Standard Off-Peak, Standard Advance, and Season Tickets - and the discount is valid at any time of day, offering maximum flexibility for daily travel.
How much is a 16-17 Saver Railcard?
The 16–17 Saver Railcard costs just £35 for a full year. Cardholders save an average of up to £367* annually, making it a highly cost-effective option for regular travellers — with unlimited use throughout its validity period.
How do you use a 16-17 Saver Railcard?
When booking, simply select the "Add Railcard" option and choose your 16-17 Saver Railcard. Your discount will be applied immediately. To prove you own a Railcard, you must be able to show the Railcard in the app when travelling or buying tickets in person, or else you may be required to pay a full-price ticket and/or a penalty fare.
What's the difference between a 16-17 Saver and 16-25 Railcard?
The 16-17 Saver offers 50% off Standard Anytime, Standard Off-Peak, Standard Advance and Season tickets, as well as most Rail Rover fares, Express services to the airport, and 1/3 off PlusBus day tickets. Alternatively, the 16‑25 Railcard gives 1/3 off Standard Anytime and Standard Off-Peak tickets, as well as Standard and First Class Advance tickets, Anytime Day Travelcards, Express Trains to the airport and more.
Both allow for travel during any time of the day, but a 16-25 Railcard has a minimum fare of £12 that applies to all journeys made between 4:30 AM and 9:59 AM, Monday to Friday, excluding Advance fares.
Ultimately, the 16-17 Railcard typically offers a larger discount on most ticket types.
Using your 16-17 Saver Railcard
Can I use my 16-17 Saver Railcard on Transport for London services?
Yes, you can use a 16-17 Saver Railcard on Transport for London (TfL) services if you buy a Travelcard as part of a train ticket into London from outside Zones 1-9. However, you can't use a 16-17 Saver on pay-as-you-go Oyster fares or single fares.
Can I use my 16-17 Saver to buy tickets for other people?
No. The 16-17 Saver only provides discounts on tickets bought for your own use. It does not cover anyone accompanying you.
How do you add a 16-17 Saver to your Oyster card?
The 16-17 Saver discounts are not valid on Oyster fares for journeys on National Rail, London Underground, and Docklands Light Railway.
Can the 16-17 Saver be used to buy Season Tickets?
Yes, the 16-17 Saver can be used to buy season tickets, as it gives 50% off standard season tickets for anyone aged 16-17. This discount is an exception to the rule that most Railcards cannot be used with already-discounted season tickets.

When does a 16-17 Saver Railcard expire?
A 16-17 Saver Railcard expires one year after purchase or on your 18th birthday, whichever comes first. If you purchase a season ticket before your 16-17 Saver Railcard expires, you can continue to use that Season Ticket for up to 4 months after the card's expiry date.
Do digital 16-17 Saver Railcards work on older iPhone models?
Yes, as long as your app is up-to-date and your device supports mobile ticketing features.
