Detian Transnational Waterfall Scenic Spot

9.1
4.7/5
27.5k reviews
Detian Transnational Waterfall Scenic Spot is located on the Guichun River along the China-Vietnam border in Guangxi. Here the border river meets a cliff, and the water drops in three tiers with a fall of about 60 m, facing Vietnam's Ban Gioc Waterfall across the cliff. In the rainy season, when the water is abundant, the two waterfalls almost merge into one, with a combined width of more than 200 m, and the roar can be heard across the valley. This is also one of the filming locations for the TV drama The Journey of Flower. The highlights of the visit mostly unfold around this border river: after passing through the Detian Archway, you can take a bamboo raft from the bank toward the foot of the waterfall, look up as the curtain of water crashes down from the cliff top and mist hits your face, and experience up close the unique atmosphere of two countries just a step apart on the border river; on the river, you can often encounter Vietnamese border residents rowing small bamboo rafts to sell coffee, dried fruit, and other small goods, and the bargaining has much of the fun of a cross-border market. After coming ashore, follow the waterfall-viewing boardwalk and the multi-level viewing platforms to look back at the full panorama of the waterfall from different heights. The No. 53 boundary marker, erected in the Qing Dynasty and inscribed with "China Guangxi Boundary," is a popular photo spot. The waterfall view changes noticeably with water volume: during the summer wet season, the water is surging and visually stunning, while in the dry season it is relatively delicate; bamboo raft docks have long queues during peak season, so if you want to view the waterfall up close, it is recommended to plan an early start; there is heavy mist on the bamboo raft, so remember to protect your phone and camera from water.China · Daxin

Huangguoshu Scenic Area

4.6/5
40.2k reviews
The Huangguoshu Scenic Area is located in Anshun, Guizhou, centered around the Huangguoshu Waterfall. Surrounded by deep gorges, dense vegetation, and dotted with limestone caves and stone forests, it is a typical karst landscape area. The waterfall's name originates from the locally abundant "Huangguoshu" (Ficus virens). Ming Dynasty traveler Xu Xiake visited and documented this site, contributing to its fame. The scenic area primarily consists of three main sections: the Great Waterfall, Tianxing Bridge, and Doupotang. Most travelers follow the sequence of Doupotang, Tianxing Bridge, and finally the Great Waterfall, saving the most spectacular view for last. The grand waterfall has a drop of nearly 80 m and a width of over 100 m. The Baishui River plunges from the cliff top into Rhinoceros Pool, creating a vast mist. Multiple viewing platforms around it allow visitors to experience its grandeur, wonder, steepness, and beauty from different angles—above, below, front, back, left, and right. A particularly unique experience lies behind the waterfall: a 100 m long Water Curtain Cave runs horizontally through its midsection, featuring cave windows and halls. Reaching through a window, one can touch the cascading water. The cave served as the filming location for the Water Curtain Cave in the 1986 TV series Journey to the West. Due to the heavy humidity inside, bringing a raincoat in advance is recommended. Tianxing Bridge is renowned for its harmonious blend of rocks, water, trees, and caves—where rocks rise from the water, caves hide within rocks, and trees stand beside caves. The stepping stones along the path are engraved with dates, allowing travelers to find their own "birthday stone." The attraction is divided into upper and lower sections. Many travelers turn back after completing the upper section, missing the Silver Chain Waterfall in the lower part—where water cascades like silver chains into a funnel-shaped pool, the highlight of Tianxing Bridge. The Doupotang waterfall is located approx. 1 km upstream from the grand waterfall. With a width of over 100 m at its crest, the water spreads out smoothly like a beaded curtain. During the high-water season, its deep roar earns it the nickname "roaring waterfall." The scene of the four pilgrims leading their horse across the river in the 1986 TV series Journey to the West was filmed here. In summer and fall, the waterfalls are full and powerful, while in winter and spring, the flow becomes gentler, offering different viewing experiences. Nearby, visitors can also enjoy local snacks like sticky rice, love tofu, and Anshun spring rolls.China · Zhenning

Dianchi Lake

Dianchi Lake, also known as Kunming Lake, is the sixth-largest freshwater lake in China. Its expansive and magnificent surface has earned it the reputation of "five hundred li of Dianchi Lake" since ancient times. As one of the larger plateau lakes in Yunnan Province, Dianchi Lake is surrounded by numerous waterfront parks and wetlands, making it an unmissable stop when visiting Kunming. Every winter, large flocks of black-headed gulls fly all the way from Siberia to Dianchi Lake to spend the winter. This spectacle has occurred faithfully every year since 1985, and feeding the black-headed gulls along the lakeshore has become a highly popular winter experience in Kunming. Strolling along the sightseeing road on the east bank of Dianchi Lake is a great way to experience the lake up close. On one side is the vast, misty expanse of water, with the Western Hills stretching across the distance; in winter, the sightseeing road is especially lively, as residents and visitors alike stop by the lakeside to interact with the black-headed gulls. For a different perspective, you can take the cableway from the lakeside to Dragon Gate in the Western Hills and look down from above, taking in the entire Dianchi Lake at a glance. In the Caohai area at the northern end, you can also take a boat out on the lake and experience its vastness from the water. In recent years, through sustained governance, the water quality and lakeside ecology of Dianchi Lake have gradually improved, the wetland views along the lake are also continuously being restored, and the sightseeing environment has been significantly enhanced compared to the past.China · Kunming

Stone Forest Scenic Area

The Stone Forest scenic area , located in Shilin County, Kunming, is one of Kunming's key tourist attractions. It features typical karst landforms, with numerous stone peaks, stalagmites, sinkholes, and underground rivers. The peaks and forests take on various shapes, such as sword-shaped, tower-shaped, and mushroom-shaped, creating a breathtakingly beautiful landscape. The entire scenic area consists of several sections, including the Greater and Lesser Stone Forests, Naigu Stone Forest, Dadieshui, and Changhu Lake. These sections are relatively sparsely distributed, and regular visits are mainly concentrated in the Greater and Lesser Stone Forests area. The Greater and Lesser Stone Forests are located in the same area. Walking along the path for 20 minutes, you'll find the smaller attraction on your left, with gently sloping peaks. Amidst a dense cluster of peaks, the famous Ashima Stone stands majestically, its imposing peaks resembling a graceful Yi girl, Ashima, seemingly beckoning you. This is a popular spot for photos. Besides the beautiful Ashima, the Lesser Stone Forest area also features other unique formations such as the Divine Steed and the Clustered Stones Reaching the Sky. This is a test of your imagination! If your imagination isn't quite there yet, it's recommended to hire a guide. With their guidance, you'll gain a completely new understanding of the stone forest before you. As you slowly walk along the road, you'll see Tang Monk Stone, Stone Prison, Phoenix Comb Wings, Lingzhi Stone, and other lifelike formations along the way, each displaying the wonders of nature in various poses. Following the path, you'll unexpectedly arrive at the Great Stone Forest area. Passing by wonders like "Two Birds Feeding," "Rhinoceros Gazing at the Moon," "Lotus Peak," "Stone Forest Scenic Spot," and "Stone Screen," you might be a little tired. Take a short rest at Lion Pavilion and admire the reflection of the peaks in Lion Pond across the lake—a tranquil experience. After seeing so many peaks, some aesthetic fatigue is inevitable. It's time to check out the water features! Board a cruise on Stone Forest Lake and cruise on the water, where the mountain scenery and water views converge—all your stress and worries will disappear. Naigu Stone Forest, also known as New Stone Forest or Mozhai Stone Forest, comprises stone forest landscapes, Baiyun Lake, Shifeng Mountain, and Yougu Xianpu (Secluded Valley Waterfall). Compared to the Greater and Lesser Stone Forests, it presents a different style. The peaks here are predominantly gray-black, with tall, densely packed stone pillars resembling castles, towers, and mushrooms. The ancient, rugged rocks rise like towering waves, creating a magnificent and imposing sight. Strolling through the black peaks feels like entering a wild and untamed world.China · Shilin

Yunnan Nationalities Village

8.2
4.3/5
15.4k reviews
Yunnan Nationalities Village is located on the shores of Dianchi Lake in the southwestern suburbs of Kunming. It is a themed attraction that showcases the diverse ethnic cultures of Yunnan. Within the park, villages of more than ten ethnic minorities—including the Dai, Bai, Yi, Wa, Naxi, Tibetan, and Hani—have been reconstructed according to their traditional architectural styles. The residential architecture, religious beliefs, and folk customs of each ethnic group are concentrated in one place, allowing visitors to experience the distinctive cultures of multiple ethnic groups in Yunnan within a single day. Upon entering the attraction, the Dai Village is the first thing that comes into view. The village is surrounded by water on three sides, with lush tropical and subtropical plants providing shade, and stilted Dai bamboo houses scattered throughout. Walking along the red sandstone path, you can see a Myanmar-style Buddhist temple and a towering white pagoda. The white pagoda is a scaled replica of the Yunyan Pagoda in Yingjiang, Dehong, with dozens of smaller pagodas clustered around the main pagoda, and wind chimes on the pagodas ringing softly in the breeze. Boat tours are also available near the Dai Village. The Yi village is located on the west side of the National Unity Square and is one of the larger villages in the park. In the center of the village's Sun Calendar Square stands a totem stone pillar, carved with patterns such as the sun, flames, and tiger stripes. Surrounding it are scattered stone balls symbolizing the movement of the sun and moon, reflecting the Yi people's calendrical wisdom based on the sun as a reference. Since ancient times, the Yi people have worshipped the tiger as a totem. At the village entrance, there is a tiger-shaped rockery and a relief wall featuring three tigers. The village also restores the Yi people's distinctive flat-roofed earthen buildings and a traditional liquor-brewing workshop, showcasing the traditional production and daily life scenes of the Yi people. The Bai ethnic village is renowned for its traditional dwellings, whose architecture blends Han and Bai construction techniques. The three white pagodas in the village are scaled-down replicas of the Three Pagodas of Dali and are quite striking. The Bai village also displays butterfly specimens, and visitors can experience the Bai "three-course tea" — bitter tea, sweet tea, and aftertaste tea served in succession, symbolizing the life philosophy of enduring hardship before enjoying sweetness. In addition to the villages mentioned above, the park also features villages of the Miao, Mosuo, Yao, Naxi, and other ethnic groups, each with its own unique architectural style and cultural displays. Regular ethnic song and dance performances are often held on the plazas of each village, and the park also hosts large-scale ethnic cultural shows such as "Call of the Plateau." During traditional ethnic festivals such as the Dai Water Festival and the Yi Torch Festival, the attraction also holds corresponding celebrations, making it a great time to experience ethnic festival culture.China · Kunming

The boat ticket is quite expensive, it is 170 yuan. If you want a more luxurious boat, it will cost more. It depends on how you view this place. If you are going to play for two or three days, it is more suitable to travel by water.

Aside from the water being a bit low when I went, everything else was fine. The boat ride past the waterfall was worth seeing, and the path to the viewing platform after disembarking was also okay. It was a bit commercialized but not overly so, and the facilities along the way blended well with the surrounding environment.

Walking slowly along the path, a cool mist washes over you, and the holographic projections and the waterfall's flow intertwine, like a flowing galaxy. Reaching the central viewing platform, the 77.8-meter-high waterfall transforms into a giant natural screen. Lasers pierce the night sky, and rainbows and Buyi ethnic totems appear and disappear in the mist. The roar of the waterfall and the sound of drums resonate together; at that moment, you truly forget to take out your phone and just want to stand and watch the whole thing.

Location: Haigeng Park/No. 16 Hubin Road ↔ Xishan Longmen (West Mountain Dragon Gate), not near the old street, you have to go to the Dianchi Lake area. Experience: Crossing the lake + climbing the mountain, about 20 minutes one way, views of Dianchi Lake, Sleeping Beauty Mountain, and city scenery, great for taking photos. Ticket Price: One way about 59-60 RMB, round trip about 98-100 RMB. Advantages: Easy for lazy people to climb West Mountain, no climbing required, unique views; seagulls in winter. Disadvantages: Stops during strong winds/thunderstorms; long queues during peak season; separate ticket/walking required for Longmen after climbing the mountain; don't confuse with the "Xishan Longmen Cableway". Conclusion: First time in Kunming, taking the Dianchi-Xishan route → worth it; if just exploring the old street → not worth a special trip.

I visited this well-known 5A scenic spot several years ago. I bought Ashima cigarettes there for 260 yuan a carton, but I heard they've been discontinued for a few years. There were many vendors selling ginseng fruit in the parking lot, the cheapest being 10 yuan for five bags. I bought quite a few.

Aside from the slightly expensive ticket price, it's flawless! But it's definitely worth the money. We went at the end of July. We went early in the morning and boarded the boat without a reservation. After one round, a long queue had already formed opposite us. If you don't want to queue, definitely go early. The scenery was breathtaking; my phone couldn't capture the beauty of the view. The boatman stopped the raft midway to give us time to take photos. The whole trip took almost an hour, and it was well worth it. My parents loved it! Highly recommended!
