Fisherman's Bastion

8.6
4.7/5
656 reviews
The Fisherman's Bastion is located on the Castle Hill on the Buda side. It is a fortress named in memory of the fishermen who defended the Danube in the past. It is known as the three most shocking buildings in Hungary together with the Hungarian Parliament Building and the National Opera House. It also overlooks the Danube and overlooks the Lookout point for views of the Perth district. Historical background The Fisherman's Bastion stands on the Danube River, adjacent to the Matthias Church. It was built in 1895 and took six years to complete. This double-storey gray-white building is centered on the white minaret of the neo-Roman style. Together with several surrounding round towers, it represents the ancestral tribes of Hungary. The towers are connected by cloisters, like a labyrinth, which looks like a Disney Logo from a distance. in the castle. Several bronze statues on the Fisherman's Bastion are also quite eye-catching. One of the more famous is a horse-riding bronze statue of a Hungarian king. It was built in 1906 and is located between Matthias Church and Fisherman's Castle. The relief on the pedestal shows The king's life story. The guided tour of the Fisherman's Bastion has many steps and walking paths, and you can enjoy the scenery along the way as you climb the steps. Fisherman's Bastion has many high tower viewing platforms. It doesn't matter if it encounters windy, rainy weather, etc. The arched cloister of the viewing platform is a good shelter from the rain and summer. Take a break on the bench. Overlooking the scenery Standing on the Fisherman's Bastion, you can see the magnificent views that you can't even see from the top of the castle: the Danube, Margaret Island, the Chain Bridge, the Hungarian Parliament Building and the Freedom Hill are all in sight. The Fisherman's Bastion at night is also full of unique charm, and everything around is particularly charming under the illumination of special lights. The performance of street performers on the platform adds to the mood. It is also very romantic to come here to watch the night view. You can see many couples dating here. It is said that most of the first kisses of local young people happened here. The restaurant with the same name of the Fisherman's Bastion has seats in the north and south corridors of the Fisherman's Bastion. The dining environment is very good. The restaurant has a terrace on the high tower. Drinking coffee there and looking at the beautiful surrounding scenery is a pleasure. enjoy.Budapest · 55.2km from Tata

City Park is adjacent to Heroes' Square and is an important public green space in the center of Budapest, as well as one of the earliest established city parks, with a history dating back to the early 19th century. During the Middle Ages, this area was the hunting ground of King Matthias and was later used as a meeting place for the parliament. The park centers around an artificial lake, which offers boating in the summer and transforms into an open-air ice rink in the winter, with different scenery throughout the seasons. Standing on the island in the lake is Vajdahunyad Castle, built for the 1896 Hungarian Millennium Celebration, which blends various architectural styles including Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque. The park also brings together facilities such as the Széchenyi Thermal Bath, the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden, and theCapital Circus of Budapest, covering a variety of activities including thermal bath experiences, family-friendly tours, and cultural performances.Budapest · 58.2km from Tata

Buda Castle

4.4/5

Buda Castle stands majestically atop Castle Hill as one of the landmarks of Budapest. It once served as the residence of the Hungarian royal family. Today, the central part of the palace has been converted into the Budapest History Museum, the National Library, and the National Gallery. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. History The castle was first built in the 13th century under the direction of King Béla IV after the Mongol invasion. It subsequently endured destruction during the Ottoman occupation, multiple wars, and post-renovation devastation in World War II, making its history truly tumultuous. The palace we see today is its restored form after the war. Architectural styleThe architectural style combines Baroque and Gothic elements in a hybrid palace, grand in scale, with its main facade supported by Greek Corinthian columns. The exterior walls feature alternating red and white hues, while the Baroque-style green dome atop the facade is particularly striking. Visitor guide Passing through the lion gate into the courtyard, you can see the Matthias fountain, which depicts a hunting scene of King Matthias leading his entourage, with vivid postures of both the figures and the hounds. On the terrace overlooking the Danube stands the bronze statue of the mythical Turul bird, said to have guided the ancestors of the Magyars to this land, its talons clutching the "Sword of Attila." On one side of the terrace stands the equestrian statue of Prince Eugene, facing the Danube. At the entrance of the Budapest history museum, the bronze statues "War and peace" flanking the doorway symbolize war and peace through angelic figures, also worthy of close observation. The interior is also worth spending time on: the Hungarian National Gallery is renowned for its Gothic altarpieces, wood carvings, and other medieval artworks; the Budapest History Museum tells the story of the city and preserves restored medieval palace halls and chapels; the Széchényi National Library houses rare ancient books, including the former royal collection of King Matthias. After the visit, take a stroll on the Danube-facing viewing terrace, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the Chain Bridge, the Parliament Building, and the scenery along both banks of the Danube—especially enchanting at dusk when the lights come on. To ascend the hill, you can either walk up through the old town of Castle Hill or take the cable car from the end of the Chain Bridge for a leisurely ride up.Budapest · 55.7km from Tata

St. Stephen's Cathedral

8.2
4.7/5
603 reviews
"St. Stephen's Cathedral is located in Stephansplatz in the center of Vienna's old town. It is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Vienna and one of the city's symbols. The church was first built in the 12th century as a Romanesque parish church. In the 14th century, under the leadership of Duke Rudolf IV, it underwent large-scale expansion and gradually took on the form of a Gothic cathedral. From the late 15th century, it became the cathedral of the Bishop of Vienna. A fire at the end of World War II destroyed the roof, which was later rebuilt after the war. Over the centuries, many weddings and funerals of the Habsburg dynasty were held here. Mozart was married in this church, and his funeral also took place here. Particularly striking is the church's colorful roof: hundreds of thousands of glazed tiles form diamond patterns, with the Habsburg double-headed eagle emblem embedded on the southern slope and the coats of arms of Vienna and Austria on the northern slope, shimmering brilliantly under the sunlight. The roof has an extremely steep pitch, allowing rainwater to wash it clean and preventing snow from accumulating. The Gothic main tower on the south side stands over 130 m tall and is affectionately called "Steffl" (Little Steffl) by the locals. It once housed the watchmen's quarters, where they kept watch for fires across the city and sounded the alarm bells. The north tower, halted due to construction difficulties, reaches only half the height of the main tower. Upon entering the church interior, the baroque high altar at the far end depicts the martyrdom of the patron saint Stephen; the Wiener Neustadt altar on the north side is a gothic double-winged altar, revealing gilded wood carvings of the Virgin Mary's life when opened on Sundays, with Emperor Frederick III's "A.E.I.O.U." motto still visible on its base. The stone pulpit in the central courtyard features reliefs of the four doctors of the church, adorned with carvings of a toad and lizard biting each other on its handrail, while a self-portrait of the sculptor peeking from a window hides beneath the pulpit steps; the crucifix playfully nicknamed "Jesus with a toothache" by Viennese locals is also worth pausing to admire. The catacombs house remains of over ten thousand individuals, including victims relocated after plagues and the sarcophagi/copper urns of dozens of Habsburg family members; beside the apostle choir stalls, Frederick III's red marble sarcophagus carved with over two hundred figures is regarded as a masterpiece of medieval stone sculpture. If your physical condition allows, you can climb the observation deck via the over 300 spiral stone steps of the south tower to overlook the continuous red-tiled roofs of Vienna's old town. The north tower has an elevator, allowing you to admire the approx. 20-ton "Pummerin" bell up close—one of the few giant bells in Austria and among the top-ranking surviving large bells in Europe. It only rings during important festivals like Christmas and New Year, with its deep chimes resonating throughout the entire old town on New Year's Eve.Austria · Vienna

Heroes' Square

Heroes' Squarewas built to commemorate the millennium of Hungary's founding. Construction began in the late 19th century, and through continuous improvements, it has evolved into the solemn and magnificent complex of buildings and sculptures seen today. As an important historical and cultural space in Budapest, this square is not only a must-visit for tourists but also a traditional venue for major celebrations and commemorative events in Hungary. The Millennium Monument in the center of the square is the core of the entire complex. At the top of the towering stone column stands a bronze statue of Archangel Gabriel, holding the Holy Crown, which symbolizes Hungary's national power, in one hand and a double cross in the other, creating a solemn and majestic presence. In front of the monument lies the Memorial Stone of Heroes, dedicated to honoring those who sacrificed their lives for the country and the nation. The Museum of Fine Arts and the Palace of Art are symmetrically located on either side of the square. These two neoclassical buildings, with their grand porticos and stone columns, echo the central monument, together creating a solemn and expansive urban landscape.Budapest · 57.9km from Tata

Votive Church

4.5/5
56 reviews
The Votive Church is located next to Vienna's Ringstrasse, facing the main building of the University of Vienna across the street. It is a neo-Gothic Catholic church, often referred to as the Church of Thanksgiving due to its origin as a votive offering. In 1853, Emperor Franz Joseph I survived an assassination attempt when the blade was deflected by his stiff collar during a walk near the old city walls. His brother, Archduke Maximilian, subsequently initiated a fundraising campaign across the empire to build this church in gratitude for the emperor's narrow escape. Construction took over twenty years, and the church was finally completed in 1879 for the silver wedding anniversary of the emperor and Empress Elisabeth. The facade follows a typical Gothic layout: two nearly 100 m high openwork spires stand symmetrically on either side, with a gallery of saints above the three pointed-arch doorways, while rose windows and flying buttresses outline its soaring silhouette. Due to its white stone construction and colorful patterned roof tiles, travelers often mistake it for St. Stephen's Cathedral, though the two buildings are separated by over seven centuries. Inside, notable features include the gilded canopy above the high altar, the hexagonal marble pulpit—bearing a relief portrait of architect Heinrich von Ferstel at its base—and the Renaissance-style sarcophagus of Count Niklas Salm, who defended Vienna during the 1529 Ottoman siege. The open green space in front of the church offers expansive views and is an ideal spot for photographing the twin spires, whose silhouettes stand out distinctly at dusk. This location can be combined with visits to other Ringstrasse landmarks like the University of Vienna main building and City Hall.Austria · Vienna

Basilica of Esztergom is located on Castle Hill in the northern city of Esztergom, attracting a large number of visitors. The building features a typical Neoclassical style, with a front supported by thick, tall stone columns, and its solemn facade and massive hemispherical dome create a stunning appearance. Because the basilica is situated on high ground, its magnificent dome is particularly striking when viewed from a distance and can even be clearly seen from across the Danube River. Stepping inside, the spacious nave has a cruciform layout, and the massive dome allows natural light to enter through twelve windows, making the entire space appear bright.Esztergom · 34.8km from Tata

Széchenyi Chain Bridge

4.6/5
484 reviews
The Chain Bridge, also known as the Szechenyi Bridge or the Szechenyi Chain Bridge, was originally named after its patron, and was later commonly known as the Chain Bridge because of the construction method of iron chain traction. This is a bridge across the Danube, connecting Buda and Pest, and a symbol and landmark of the merged city. The construction of the Chain Bridge began in 1839 and was completed in 1849, with a total length of 380 meters. When it was built, it was the bridge with the largest span in the world at that time. The bridge body was made of chains as the skeleton. There were pedestrian walkways on both sides of the bridge deck, and vehicles could pass in the middle. The bridgeheads standing on both sides of the strait are two tall and majestic stone triumphal arches. Huge steel cables are drawn out from the bridgehead, and the stretched bridge deck is suspended, outlining a strong curve. There are two stone lions guarding the bridge near the Pace area. The lion is resolute and majestic. It guards the Chain Bridge day and night like a patron saint. Walking on the Bridge Walking on the Chain Bridge, you can enjoy the charming scenery on both sides of Buda and Pest, the tranquil Danube, the magnificent Hungarian Parliament Building, and the dreamy Fisherman's Bastion. When you are in it, it is like stepping into a frozen historical picture. Whether it is spring, summer, autumn or winter, the scenery here is unique. The Buda end of the Chain Bridge has a vertical cable car from which you can ascend the Castle Hill. On the Pest side of the Chain Bridge is Széchenyi Istvan Square, where you can admire the palace-like buildings of the Hungarian Academy of Social Sciences and the Four Seasons Hotel. The Chain Bridge, a romantic place, is full of romance and literature when the lights are on. Under the light and shadow, the Chain Bridge is more mottled and has a hazy beauty. You can see many couples dating here. No wonder it has always been known as Budapest. One of the more romantic places, the famous "Love in Budapest" has also been filmed here many times. The Buda Palace on the Buda side is a great place to look over the Chain Bridge, from where you can enjoy a stunning view of the Reichstag, the Chain Bridge and the Danube. Every year on the Hungarian National Day, the Chain Bridge is only for pedestrians, and fireworks will bloom on the Danube River.Budapest · 56km from Tata

Castle Hill is located on the Buda side of Budapest, the capital of Hungary. It is one of the city's important historical and cultural areas and an ideal starting point for understanding the history and cityscape of Budapest. Buda Castle is the heart of this entire attraction. It was once an important residence for the Hungarian royal family. Today, the palace complex houses the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum / Castle Museum, where you can learn about the development of Hungary through a rich collection of artworks and historical exhibitions. This attraction also preserves a complete and vibrant old town. The streets wind along the ridge, and the squares, residences, and buildings largely retain their medieval style. Strolling through it feels like stepping back in time to an ancient European town. Cobblestone roads, colorful roofs, and historical buildings complement each other, filling the area with a tranquil and romantic atmosphere.Budapest · 55.1km from Tata

Memorial and Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau was a concentration camp and extermination center established by Nazi Germany during World War II, and it is an important historical site of the Holocaust. In 1940, the Nazi SS established the Auschwitz I concentration camp here, which was subsequently expanded to include Auschwitz II-Birkenau, Auschwitz III, and several subcamps. Starting in 1942, Birkenau became one of the primary sites for the Nazi systematic extermination of Jews in Europe. Today, it is an important place for commemorating the victims, preserving historical evidence, and conducting Holocaust education, serving as a reminder of the catastrophes caused by antisemitism, racial hatred, and discrimination.Poland · Oswiecim

I have to say that the Chain Bridge looks good from any angle. If you want to take pictures from the angles of Figures 1-3, stand on the platform on the way to Buda Castle. Figures 4-5 are at the bridge head, which is right next to the No. 105 bus stop. The Leo restaurant and bar on the top floor of the Clark Hotel has an excellent viewing position. You can see the Parliament Building from the left side, and the Chain Bridge and Buda Castle from the right side. Figure 6 is on the protruding platform on the left side facing the Buda Castle.
