In 1809, before the defeat of the Battle of Cegar, the Duke of Resava launched an attack on the Turkish side and fired directly at the Turkish warehouse, causing more than 4,000 of his own and more than 10,000 Turkish casualties. The Turks were victorious nonetheless, beheading and scalping the Serbs and embedding them in the tower. There were originally 952 skulls, but now only 58 remain, and the tower has become a testament to the bravery of the Serbs.Nis · 2.4km from downtown

Belgrade Fortress

Belgrade Fortress stands on a hill at the confluence of the Sava and the Danube River and is the heart of the city's history. The history of the fortress dates back to the Roman period, and since then, the Byzantines, Ottomans, and Austrians have successively built and fortified it. The layers of walls and towers bear the marks of different civilizations—the Upper Town preserves foundation ruins from the Roman period, the clock tower built by the Ottomans still stands today, and the fortifications reinforced during the Austrian period are also clearly visible. The fortress is divided into the Upper Town and the Lower Town, with Kalemegdan on its perimeter, where statues of Serbian writers and poets are scattered along the walking paths. In the evening, the sunset turns the confluence of the Sava and the Danube River a golden red. Standing on the fortress walls, you can take in the skylines of both banks, and the sunset view is particularly stunning.Serbia · Belgrade

I visited early in the morning, so it was empty and a good place to take a walk. It seems that they hold jazz concerts depending on the season. There is also a cafe so you can relax. The bus terminal is nearby, so it is easy to access.

Skull Tower in Nis is quite literally, as the name would suggest - a big tower made from human skulls. After the failed Serbian uprising against the Ottomans in 1809, the Turkish governor at the time, Hurshid Pasha decided it would be a major deterrent to others to take the heads of 1,000 executed Serb prisoners and turn them into a 5 meter high tower. Most of the skulls have since been stolen, however a few poor ones still remain with either circular bullet holes between the eyes, or a sword chop in the middle of the head. A lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon! :(

Free to visit, both day and night, and the nighttime lighting is beautiful. Although Belgrade is relatively safe, it's recommended to arrive early and leave early in the evening. I went before 10 PM on a Monday, and there were still quite a few people. Instead of walking along the river, I exited the park northeast and entered the old city's food and beverage district, which was safer. [Scenery] Good [Entertainment] Good [Value for Money] Good
